My friend Mike is very poor. But I think he is the luckiest boy I ’ve ever known. He is one member of a large, happy family.
One hot day, we were going to the ball field for a big game. “How hot it is today! ” I said. “It is too far to walk to the ball field on a day like this. We ’d better take a bus. ”
“Yes, it is hot, ” said Mike. “So let ’s go by bus. I think it is all right for me to take a dime(一角硬币) for the bus. ”
I followed him into his house. He put his hand into a small bag hanging on the door. Then he brought out some money. After taking one dime, he put the rest of the money back.
“Who owns the money ” I asked. “Is it all right for you to take money from the bag ”
“Yes, ” he smiled. “This money belongs to every one of us in the family. When we children earn money, we put it into the bag. Father puts in the most. Then when we need money, we can take it from the bag. The money bag is Mother ’s idea. She thinks it will teach us to spend money carefully and to know its real value. ”
“Doesn ’t anyone know how much you take ” I asked.
“Oh, no, ” said Mike. “Mother says we must trust each other. ”
“But couldn ’t you take out more than you need for the bus ” I asked.
“I could, ” answered Mike. “But then there might not be enough money for Jane and Fred. Someone in our family is always needing something. If I take more than I need, there won ’t be enough to go around. ”
