There were many plants in a forest. When spring came, a pine tree saw a red rose nearby and said, “What a beautiful flower! I wish I were that lovely.”

Well, one pig in San Francisco may not be flying, but she is helping people relax before they fly in planes.

Rachel Carson was born in the USA on May 27, 1907. Her mother Maria Carson was a school teacher. She loved nature and showed Rachel the beauty of nature. She also loved books and taught little Rachel to read. So Rachel fell in love with books, too. At a very early age, she decided to be a writer someday. Her story first appeared in a children’s magazine when she was ten years old.
Her first book Under the Sea Wind was published in 1941. In 1948, Miss Carson began working on another book, The Sea Around Us. She always learned about the sea carefully before she wrote. She collected information from more than one thousand places to write the book. When the book came out in 1951, it won the National Book Award. It was No.1 on the best-seller list for more than a year. The Sea Around Us made Rachel Carson really famous. In addition, it made her rich enough to leave her job and spend all her time writing. In the book called The Edge of the Sea, Carson told us what happened to life in and near the sea.
Rachel Carson’s most famous book Silent Spring came out in 1962. In this book she pointed out that the use of some kinds of pesticides (杀虫剂) like DDT would make the number of birds decline because it would kill them as well. In the end, in November 1969, the United States government decided that the use of DDT must stop in two years.
Rachel Carson died in 1964. As a great environmentalist, biologist and writer, she will be remembered by the world.
