Cell Phone Etiquette
What do you do in a situation like this? You’re eating dinner with friends at a nice restaurant. You’re having a great time when a phone rings at the table next to you. A man takes out his phone and starts talking loudly about problems he’s having with his girlfriend. He talks for almost ten minutes! This happens all the time--- on buses, in restaurants, everywhere.
Many people find cell phones useful in their day-to-day lives. But we’ve all sat next to someone talking too loudly on a cell phone. You may want to tell the loudmouth to end the conversation, but let the management take care of noisy customers. You can only control your own behavior. Here are a few rules:
.Off means off! Respect the rules of restaurants and other public places. If a sigh says “turn off cell phones,” don’t use your phone.
.Keep private conversations private! Speak softly and for a short time. Try to move away from other people.
.Lights off, phone off! Never take calls in a theater or at the movies.
.Pay attention! Talking on a cell phone while driving is dangerous. And watch where you’re going when you’re walking down the street and talking on the phone.
As more people use cell phones, things are only going to get worse. So, the next time you’re getting ready to make a call, stop and consider the people around you.
76. You can use a cell phone in public if you speak quietly. ( )

During all this time I never stopped thinking about escape. When
I traveled across to the other side of the island, I could see the
other islands, and I said to myself, “Perhaps I can get there
with a boat. Perhaps I can get back to England one day.”
So I decided to make myself a boat. I cut down a big tree, and then began to make a long hole(洞) in it. It was hard work, but about six months later, I had a very fine canoe(独木舟). Next, I had to get it down to the sea. How foolish I was! Why didn’t I think before I began working? Of course, the canoe was too heavy. I couldn’t move it! I pulled and pushed and tried everything, but it didn’t move. I was very unhappy for a long time after that.
That happened in my fourth year on the island. In my sixth year I did make myself a smaller canoe, but I didn’t try to escape in it. The boat was too small for a long journey, and I did not want to die at sea. The island was my home now, not my prison(监狱), and I was just happy to be alive. A year or two later, I made myself a second canoe on the other side of the island, I also built myself a second house there, and so I had two homes.
My life was still busy from morning to night. There were always things to do or to make. I learnt to make new clothes for myself from the skins of dead animals. They looked very strange, it is true, but they kept me dry in the rain.
I kept food and tools(工具) at both my houses, and also wild goats(山羊). There were many goats on the island, and I made fields with high fences to keep them in. They learnt to take food from me, and soon I had goats’ milk to drink every day. I also worked hard in my corn(玉米) fields. And so many years went by.

任务型阅读 (共5小题,计10分) 阅读下面的短文,并完成短文后的任务。
Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably also sing or whistle when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.
Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims(宣称)as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species(物种)are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. (76▲) If a stranger should enter your territory and want to hurt you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so, you have actually frightened the stranger away without having to fight him. (78▲)一只鸟也将会做同样的事. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting (筑巢)season. So he is screaming(尖叫)all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in spring when they are trying to attract a mate(同伴)and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.
You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.

.Close your eyes. Think about a happy memory. What do you see? What do you smell? Do memories smell? Haraid Vogt and Avery Gilbert think so. Smell and memory are very important to them. Why? They sell smells.
Who do they the smells to? And how can they sella smell? Businesses come to Vogt and Gilbert for help. Vogt and Gilbert find a smell to go with the business’s product. For example, Vogt and Gilbert worked with and expensive hotel in New York City. They developed a smell like expesive cologne(科隆香水)for the hotel’s owners. Then they put it in the air of the hotel hallway. Why did they choose the smell of cologne? A lot of businessmen stay at that hotel. The hotel’s owners want their guests(客人)to feel like they are in an expensive men’s club. And rich men wear expensive cologne.
Using smell to sell things is not new. Bakers know that the smell of baking bread brings in customers. They always make sure that people on the street can smell the baking bread. Chocolate makers do the same thing. And of course perfume (香水)makers sell smells.
In the past, only the food and perfume businesses used smell to sell their products. But today, more and more businesses are trying it, from hotels to airlines(航空公司). Some companies put a special smell on the advertisement that they send to customers. For example, one car company uses a perfume on their booklet that smells like a new car.
But do smells really sell? The answer seems to by yes. Smells become a part of our memories. And memory is important in sales, why? When customers remember the name of a product, they usually choose it again. But there are a lot of choices these days, so it isn’t easy to remember product names. That’s why smell is important. It helps people remember.
In the future, will different computers and televisions have different smells? Vogt and Gilbert think so. They are sure that one day, most businesses will use smell to sell.

Gregg Bleakney’s dream was to travel the Americas from top to Bottom. He got the idea after he finished a long bike ride. Gregg’s friend, brooks Allen, also liked riding a bike. The two friends talked and made a plan: they would travel from Alaska to Argentina—by bike.
To pay for the trip, Gregg and Brooks worked to save money for a long time. Once they were on the road, they often camped outdoors and ate cheaply. In many places, local people opened their doors to the two friends and gave them food.
On their way, there were deserts, rainforests and mountains. They visited modern cities and ancient ruins (遗迹) such as Machu Picchu in Peru. And they made many friends from all over the world.
In May 2007—two years, twelve countries, and over 30,500 kilometres later—Gregg finally reached Ushuaia, Argentina. (Near Guatemala, Brooks had to go back and Gregg continued without him.)
The trip taught both men a lot about traveling. What did they learn? Here is some of Gregg’s advice:
Travel light. You should carry many things with you.

There is always something that we can never forget. And it can really change our life.
Time is important for everyone. It organizes our everyday moments. However, before I received a watch from my father, time never had any importance in my life. It organized my life and made me more responsible.
I received this gift on a Sunday. I had to go to the airport at 9:00 am to pick up Uncle Jim and take him to my father’s house. However, I was late because I hung out with my friends. Later on that day, around 11:00 am, I remembered my uncle and went to the airport to meet him, but I was too late. He had left the airport and taken a taxi to my father’s house.
I got to my father’s house at 2:00 pm that day. Looking at my father’s face, I felt ashamed (羞愧的) at that moment. My father asked me to sit next to him and he handed me this watch as a gift. Then he said, “Bob, did you have fun with your friends today?” “Yes, Father, and I’m sorry about not picking up Uncle Jim,” I replied. He then said, “What you did was not very nice and you should be sorry for your actions. I think you should learn something from it, and this watch will be a reminder for you in your future life.” The watch is very important to me, not because of its price, but because of the lesson that I learned from it.

Children know that summer is probably the most fun of all seasons. However, experts say it is also the most dangerous, especially, for children aged 14 and under. In its first study of children's safety in the US, the National Safe Kids Campaign (NSKC) found that nearly half of the injury-related (与受伤相关的) deaths among children happen in summer.
Experts are not surprised by the study’s results. They always know summer is a dangerous season for children. During the summer, children are out of school and spend more time outdoors. They are more likely to get into an accident or be injured. "While we encourage children to be active and spend time outdoors, they need to understand the importance of safety," said Everett Koop, an expert of the NSKC.
To help children stay safe, the NSKC started a "Make it a Safe Kids Summer" Campaign (运动) during National Safe Kids Week, from May 5 through May 12. Here are some important summer safety tips from the NSKC:
● Always wear your seat belt.
● Make sure there is an adult around when you decide to go swimming.

As teenagers, you have many dreams. These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel Prize, or they can be small. You may just want to become one of the ten best students in your class.
Once you find a dream, what do you do with it? Do you ever try to make your dream true?
Follow Your Heart by Australian writer Andrews tells us that making our dreams true is life’s biggest challenge (挑战).
In fact, everyone can make his dream come true. The first thing you must do is to remember what your dream is.
Don’t let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this step by step and your dream will come true faster because a big dream is, in fact, many small dreams.
You must also never give up your dream.
There will be difficulties on the road to your dreams. But the biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You may think you’re not very good at some school subjects, or it is impossible for you to become a writer. These kinds of thoughts stop you from getting your dream, the book says.
You need to decide what is the most important. Studying instead of watching TV will lead to better exam results, while saving five yuan instead of buying an ice cream means you can buy a new book. As you get closer to your dream, it may change a little. This is good as you have the chance to learn more skills and find new interests.

Can plants eat people? Probably not, but there are many plants that eat meat. Some of them are big, and they can eat small animals. One famous meat-eating plant is the Venus flytrap.
The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in the dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are like the pages of a book. They can open and close very quickly. Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If an insect touches one of the hairs, the leaf closes quickly. The insect cannot get out. In about half an hour, the leaf presses(挤压)the insect until it is dead. Then, the plant covers the insect with a special liquid(液体). Slowly, the plant eats the insect.
Plants are living things that have leaves and roots and grows in earth. Most of them get energy from the sun, the air, and the ground. In some places, the ground is very poor. It doesn’t have all the important things that plants need, especially nitrogen(氮). Animal meat has a lot of nitrogen, so some plants eat meat to get what they need. So if you’re too busy, maybe it’s time you slowed down and enjoyed a meal with a friend. There has been a new trend(趋势)in food recently — getting away from fast food and moving toward “slow food”.
For years, the pace of life was increasing for most people. They were too busy to cook. The trouble including buying, preparing and cleaning up after a meal was becoming more bother than it was worth clearly. Luckily, there were smart business people who took the chance to provide a “fast” way to deal with the problem. Almost overnight, you could drop by the supermarket and buy complete meals in packages. All you had to do was to heat it and you could be eating a delicious meal in 5 minutes. Just add salt.
Still too slow? OK, just drive your car up to the fast-food restaurant, order your meal and within 2 minutes it will be handed over to you with salt.
The problem is health. Fast food has much more oil, salt and empty calories and far less vitamins than food freshly prepared at home. And so, since people have always wanted to live longer and healthier, a small but growing population is choosing not only fresh food, but also organically(有机)grown food — food that hasn’t been grown with chemical fertilizers(化肥).
Another reason for changes in eating habits is undoubtedly social. Over the centuries, meal times have been used to visit, laugh and learn. That doesn’t fit with today’s lifestyle and many people are looking for ways to return to that. Goodbye McDonald’s.
Finally, there’s something unique about planning your meal, buying just the right ingredients and seeing something on your table that looks just like the picture in your recipe book. So if you’re too busy, maybe it’s time you slowed down and enjoyed a meal with a friend.

For many of us, the idea of a family is a lot narrower(变窄了) than it used to be. Today children go away to college, and take up jobs wherever chances seem greatest. So instead of growing up in a family with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, many of us are truly connected only to our parents and brothers.
Many kids today know little of the lives of their relatives and don’t care deeply about them. Whether we realize it or not, this feeling of being disconnected makes people feel a kind of lonely. “People need to feel connected,” says Joy Browne, a doctor in the USA. “And they will do it in the easiest ways.” When family members aren’t connected, what could be easier than forming (形成) a connection to famous people?
This isn’t something unusual, of course. People cried when Mei Yanfang died in 2003. It’s natural and in most ways harmless to feel that way. But that’s unhealthy, because these relationships aren’t two-way.
For that, we need to stay connected to our own families. We’ll never turn back the clock to keep families from breaking. But parents can help by telling their children stories about their grandparents, aunts and cousins, and by telling them the children’s latest activities and interests.
We can use technology to keep connected with each other. It’s easy to send e-mails to granddad. Better yet, take a vacation with members of your relatives—not with any other person. A week or so of relaxing vacation can be a great way to tie up family ties. And when a bad thing happens, no one can be as helpful as your relatives. Because no matter how much we cry for the famous people, they can’t be there to cry for us.
64. Are many of children truly connected only to their parents and brothers?
65. How does this feeling of being disconnected make people feel?
66. Where is Joy Browne from?
67. What can we use to keep connected with each other?

As long as you have studied well, you will be more confident of your chance to succeed in a test. Ask your teacher in advance(提前)about the material that is going to be covered in the test. In this way, you will know what you should prepare for and you can get confidence in the test. But you have to be brave enough to ask. Most students do not ask unless their teacher gives the information first, so make sure that you ask.

Making a public speech is one of the most difficult things in the world. Here are some
good ways to help you make a successful public speech.
Don’t be nervous.
To relax before making a speech, take three deep and slow breaths – in through the nose and out through the mouth. Practice your opening sentence three or four times to give you confidence. When you stand on the stage(舞台), quickly take a look at the audience(观众) first. Think of them as your parents, teachers and friends.
Keep it natural.
Natural gestures will help your speech: smile lightly, stand straightly and hold your chest high. Try to avoid these gestures: dropping your head, playing with a pen, holding the table tightly(紧紧地) or touching your face. Speakers should dress smartly and formally(正式地). This will help the audience feel they are respected(尊敬).
Pace(步态)and pause(停顿).
Pace and pause are two important parts of every speech. Changing pace adds colors to the speech. Speak fast enough to keep people from becoming bored and slow enough for people to fully understand what you’re saying. After a key point, pause for a moment. It may make a great difference.
