People are surprised to hear this. “They think，‘I don't need to drive，and the business doesn't need to build a store，so there will be less pollution，'” says Nuria Prost，an environmental scientist. “In fact，online shopping is wasteful. It also adds to air pollution. ”
In truth，the Internet is not always as environmentally friendly as it seems. In the past，people bought things on the Internet that did not require much packing material，such as books and clothing. But now people also shop online for large，heavy products such as televisions，computers，and furniture. These products need to be packed in large amounts of plastic and paper. This creates a lot of waste.
Another problem caused by online shopping is air pollution. When customers buy products and ask for next day delivery，companies have to send them by air. Planes use much more fuel than cars and produce more carbon dioxide(CO2). When people buy a lot of different things from different online businesses，this creates even more travel by plane.
The Online product return is also a problem. For example，an online shoe store may allow customers to return shoes without extra pay if they are the wrong size. This doubles the packing material and number of plane trips required to sell one pair of shoes.
“People need to ask themselves: Is this exactly what I want Do I really need it tomorrow，or can I wait？” says Prost. “Online shopping is fast and easy but we can't forget the negative effects it has on the environment. ”

Boyan Slat has been dreaming of cleaning up the world's oceans for a long time.
In 2010, he went on a diving (潜水) vacation in Greece and was shocked. “I saw more plastic bags than fish in the water，” he said.
From then on, Slat began to pay more attention to ocean pollution. He decided to give up higher education and set up the Ocean Cleanup, a non government organization. Its purpose is to clean up ocean rubbish. He has set up the world's first ocean cleanup system (系统) with his team.
Every year, over 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans, and it can take up to 500 years to break down. In 2018, the World Economic Forum predicted that the weight of ocean plastic would match that of all the fish in our oceans by 2050. Sea animals easily get caught in plastic. They can't move. They can even die if they eat it. Smaller plastic pieces can also enter the food chain (链) and end up in our bodies.
Slat's plan was to create an environmentally friendly, large system to clear out plastic rubbish from the ocean.
After seven years of tests, on October 2nd, 2019, a machine called System 001/B came out. It successfully caught and collected a large amount of plastic rubbish floating in the ocean. Slat and his team are working to improve System 001/B. Their dream is to clear out 90 percent of all the ocean plastic by 2040.

五、 How to save
Our government is trying to build an “economized society”. It is our duty to work hard to achieve this goal. As students, we should do something to help.
First, we'd better save more water, paper and electricity. Next, we should take our own bags while shopping instead of using plastic bags from supermarkets. Then we shouldn't waste food. We'd better eat up all the food when we have meals. And don't throw the uneaten food everywhere. Finally, we'd better go to school on foot or by bike instead of taking a car.
