Last night, a school night, my 11 year old son's baseball team played a game that lasted until 9: 30. By the time we got home and he had a quick dinner and shower, it was 10: 30—an hour and a half later than a child who gets up at 6: 30 should be going to bed. We love baseball. My son is having fun, getting exercise, and learning patience, teamwork and sports spirit. But the truth is that the game also influences his sleep.
As parents, we want good things for our children. We want them to be healthy both in body and in mind. To this end, we look for ways to help our kids grow and develop. We help them with their homework. We sign them up for dance, soccer and baseball. We encourage our kids to take honors courses(培优课程)or to have after school jobs. And we praise them for hard-earned success and achievements.
However, the irony is that all of these activities and responsibilities that we are giving our children to make their lives colorful could be badly influencing their health and taking happiness away. Activities, responsibilities, and goals are good. But if we want our kids to realize their full physical, learning and social ability, sleep is important. We have to start taking sleep seriously.
Parents make bedtime routines and carry out(执行)strict rules about nighttime. But in fact, these measures(措施)aren't enough because getting our kids enough sleep isn't just about carrying out stricter bedtime. It actually requires more than that. In order to ensure our kids get the sleep they need, both parents and schools should make an effort.

Several days later I moved away and started my business. Although I often saw my father during holidays, we never talked about the graduation gift. Then one day, I got a call that my father was ill. I went to see him because I was very worried.

When Claire Vlases of Montana was in Grade 7, she learned about plans to modernize her middle school. Claire asked the school board (董事会) to add solar panels to the project because, she explained, clean energy would be helpful to a really modern school.
The board liked the idea but said it could offer just $25, 000—one-fifth of the cost. So Claire organized a group of kids and grown ups who set to work raising the rest. They sold their second hand books, put on talent shows and asked for donations (捐赠), even going door-to-door for them. One donated more than half the cost!
After two years of hard work, the group paid for the solar panels, which now provide one-fourth of the school's electricity needs—saving the neighborhood thousands of dollars. “My favorite part about this project was that one person could start something small and then the project could grow and have a big influence on the community, ” Claire said. “There are always going to be hard parts. When there's a challenge (挑战) presented to you, you can learn from it and use it as a chance to overcome it. ”

A group of working adults got together to visit their teacher. The teacher was glad to see them, and they talked about everything about their life. All of a sudden, conversations soon turned into complaints(抱怨) about stress in their work and life.
The teacher just smiled and went to the kitchen to get different cups—some in plastic, some in glass, some plain-looking and some looked rather expensive. The teacher offered his students the cups to get drinks for themselves.
When all students had a cup in hand with water, the teacher said, “If you noticed, all the nice-looking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. It is normal that you only want the best for yourselves, but that is the beginning of your problems and stress. What all of you wanted was water, not the cup, but you went for the better cups. ”
Just like in life, if life is water, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold life, but the quality of life does not change. If you only care about the cup, you won't have time to enjoy the water in it.
