How to say hello in Japanese depends on(取决于)when you say it. This is very much like different greetings in English at different times of the day or night. In Japanese culture, it also depends on whether(是否)you are on the phone or you are close to the person you are greeting. We don't get formal(正式)with our friends. We seldom greet them with "Good morning" or "Good evening". A "Hi" is enough.
The most popular and most well-known translation for "Hello" is still "Konnichiwa", but it is not exactly how to say hello in Japanese. Perhaps it is not the most suitable word for it. Actually, the correct greeting in English for "Konnichiwa" is "Good day" or "Good noon", and I am sure you wouldn't like greeting people with a "Good day" at any time, and Japanese also don't like to say "Konnichiwa" when they want to say "Hello".
Then what to do Let's do it the way the Japanese do. Use "Ohaiyo Gonzaimasu" when it's noon and "Konbanwa" to greet somebody in the afternoon. Things are different when you are on the phone. Just say "Moshi, Moshi", which is actually similar (相似) to saying "Hello" over the phone, because one doesn't often use "Good morning" or 66Good afternoon" or "Good evening" right after picking up the phone. One invariably uses the sweet old "Hello".
Next time, I'll tell you something about my life in Japan.

Now, Thailand is popular among more and more tourists from the world, including Chinese. In Thailand we should do the things as Thais do. When we can't do all the things as Thais, we should at least learn and respect(尊重) their customs (风俗). Here's something about their customs.
Personal appearance (外表) is very important in Thailand as a sign of respect for other people. Your clothes should be tidy, clean and free from holes. Shorts and sleeveless (无袖的) shirts are not welcomed in churches (教堂) Remember that you will need to take off your shoes when entering rooms. so don't wear shoes that are slow to get on and off. The rules are even stricter(严格) with foreign visitors, so even if you see a local in shorts, it's not OK for everyone.
It's not polite to touch a Thai on the head, including children. At the same time, don't touch people with your feet, or even point with them because they think feet are dirty and low.
If someone is sitting with outstretched (伸出的) feet, don't step over them, because this is very rude. It could even make people angry. Even if the person is sleeping, it is best to go around until he or she notices and lets you go out.

The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plate as soon as I have emptied it. That often makes me uncomfortable. I have to eat the food even if I don’t want to, because it is considered bad manners in the US to leave your food on the plate. I have already noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’s dinner party, he very often refuses the offer of food or drink though he is in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China, but it is not in the West at all. In the United States, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again or insist on his accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not ,they will say, “No, thanks.” When an American is fed with beer by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I’ll take some juice if you have it.” If they finish the meal, they’ll say “Thanks” to the host. That is what an American will do. So when you go to the United States, you had better remember the famous saying: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

D. Try to eat as much food as possible, though you are full enough.

In the eyes of many foreigners, Chinese are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world. And Western hosts sometimes look rude(粗鲁的) in the eyes of Chinese guests. It is because the guest-host relationship in China is quite different from that in some Western countries.
In China, guests are almost like gods. Whenever I enter a Chinese friend’s home, there is always fruit on the table for me, and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the West, generally the guest is not a god. Acting according to the host’s way of doing things is usual behaviour for a guest.
My wife’s mother, a very kind Chinese lady, doesn’t smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as non-smoker, I feel unhappy. Usually, I want to stop them directly, but I must realize that in China, to be a good host, she must not do that.
In most North American homes, if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At the very least, you should ask, “Is it OK if I smoke ” But don’t be surprised if they say “No, you can’t smoke.” In my culture, if you smoke in their house, you are a bad guest, but if they don’t allow you to smoke in their house, they are not rude hosts.
In a word, no matter where you are, the best way to be a good guest is to adapt to(适应) the habits of your hosts.
