By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova — not as a musician but as her page turner. "I'm not a trained musician, but I've learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance."
Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group's official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn't have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
"A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don't turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot," Mr Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of "nodding" to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. "I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand," Mr Titterton said. "Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back."
Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.
"My husband is the worst page turner," she laughed. "He's interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say:' Turn, turn!' Robert is the best page turner I've had in my entire life."
1.What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner
A.Read music. B.Play the piano. C.Sing songs. D.Fix the instruments.
2.Which of the following best describes Titterton's job on stage
A.Boring. B.Well-paid. C.Demanding. D.Dangerous.
3.What does Titterton need to practise
A.Counting the pages. B.Recognizing the "nodding".
C.Catching falling objects. D.Performing in his own style.
4.Why is Ms Raspopova's husband "the worse page turner"
A.He has very poor eyesight. B.He ignores the audience.
C.He has no interest in music. D.He forgets to do his job.
C
It's a Saturday night, the kids are asleep and we have no plans. Before we fall into our routine and watch a movie, I try to talk my husband into playing a card game. Unconvinced, he continues tapping away on his phone. But just before disappearing into the social media rabbit hole, he has an idea. He looks over me and suggests, "Why don't we try calling one of our friends "
I look at him with raised brows, as if his suggestion is somewhat ridiculous and perhaps even socially unacceptable. You can't just call someone out of the blue now…right But then I realize in the not so distant past, this was the norm. My early teenage years saw me connecting with friends through a phone. We could chat for hours about the latest gossip and news, sometimes hidding under my blanket in order to avoid the chances of being caught by my parents. I could even memorize the phone numbers of loved ones then. I guess these days, they would be on my "Favorites" list in my smartphone.
Today, many of my "favorite" people are followed from a distance through social media, and even they very rarely—if ever—would get an actual call from me. The birth announcement by my oldest friend is received through scrolling the past pictures. The news of a divorce from a couple arrives after a photo of a woman led me on a search for more gossip. Bits of such information, may have been a part of my digital feed for years. The idea of actually picking up the phone to reconnect with a long-lost friend is a frightening one—even seeing the name of an old friend pop up in an incoming call can feel a little afraid.
I ask my husband, "Who would we call " After tossing around a few names, we agree on some potential candidates— people whose lives have taken them in different directions, but with whom we still share deep friendships.
1. How does the author feel about her husband's suggestion at first
A. Excited. B. Motivated. C. Nervous. D. Surprised.
2. With the phone, the author's teenage years was _____.
A. difficult but interesting B. peaceful and meaningful
C. pleasant and unforgettable D. inconvenient but enjoyable
3. In the following days, the couple may ____.
A. share more of their private information with others
B. contact more long-lost friends through social media
C. have more personal communications with their friends
D. add more friends' names to the contact lists in their phones
4. What's the purpose of the passage
A. To argue for the need of the contact of long-lost old friends.
B. To tell us about one of his unforgettable experiences.
C. To remind us to turn to phones to keep in touch with friends.
D. To persuade us to follow our friends through the social media.
D
It can be a real struggle to try to learn a new language. I had always enjoyed learning languages in school, but only recently did I start learning German. I found that I could understand and learn individual words easily, but when it came to literature, I really struggled. That was when my tutor at university suggested reading some children's books printed in the target language(目标语言).
At first, I felt it a bit silly to go on a hunt for a book designed for someone half my age, but then I realized that everyone has to start somewhere. As children, we were given these basic texts to familiarize our brains with certain vocabulary and writing structures, and from there, we could learn and develop. I started with books which are taught to children in the UK. I managed to find Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.
The beauty of reading books that were introduced to you as a child is that you are already familiar with the plot. As a result, you can work out some of the definitions of words with your prior knowledge of the story. At first, I used to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, but this method did not work well for me. The method I would recommend is to read a chapter of your chosen children's book and at the end of that chapter, highlight the words you do not know and then look up the definitions. If you can wait a bit before you use a dictionary, you may be surprised what you can get merely from the context of the sentence in the story. Additionally, a lot of children's books have pictures which may give you a clue as to what or whom the passage is referring to.
1. Why was the author advised to read children's books
A. She liked children's literature. B. She was slow to learn languages.
C. She couldn't remember any words. D. She was weak in reading great works in German.
2. What can kids get from children's books according to the passage
A. Design skills. B. Learning methods.
C. Words and writing structures. D. Vocabulary and listening skills.
3. What caused the author to feel surprised while she was reading children's books
A. Getting familiar with the plot of the story.
B. Grasping the context from the pictures.
C. Understanding the words simply from the context.
D. Looking up the definitions of words from a dictionary.
4. What can be the best title of the passage
A. Reading Children's Books B. My Good Reading Habits
C. The Ways of Learning Languages D. The Method of Using a Dictionary

The really great stories are not the stories written by the world's greatest writers, but the ones that really happen to real people and are absolutely true. The following story is one of such great stories.
In 1917, American soldiers poured into Europe to put an end to World War I. A troop of its army was sent to be stationed in a German town Seldes.
Alex Lurye, a lone Jewish soldier in the troop, decided to see what the Jewish population there was like one night. He entered the local Jewish church. Though in uniform, he was greeted by a kind Jew Herr Rosenau. After the services. Rosenau invited the serviceman to his house, where the family gave him a delicious warm home-cooked meal, and also the feeling that he was not alone, certainly not an enemy, even in such a far and distant land.
The warm caring Jewish home did not leave the soldier. When Alex finally returned to Duluth, Minnesota, his hometown, he wrote a letter to the German Jew who had touched his life with such kindness. For some unknown reason, although Herr Rosenau received the letter, it was never answered, just kept in a desk drawer. In 1938, Adolf Hitler's anti Jewish policy made Rosenau's family worried about their future. They wanted to flee from Germany, but he had no relatives abroad to help them. Suddenly Rosenau thought of the letter. He went to pull the desk drawer and opened the letter that had rested there for 21 years. It was Alex's thank-you letter. Although Herr didn't know if the former American soldier still remembered him, he decided to try his luck. However, there was no return address on the envelope. He only found the name of the writer, and the city and the state. Even so, he could do nothing but have a try. He hoped to get out before the mad man, Hitler, began to do worse things to the Jews.
So he wrote a letter addressed only as follows:
Alex Lurye
Duluth, Minnesota
To his family's great excitement, the letter did work and they soon got a reply from Alex Lurye!
Paragraph 1:
Duluth was merely a town of over a hundred thousand people. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2:
The kindness that Herr Rosenau had given to a stranger many years earlier had come full circle. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

故填to suffer。
分析句子可知, ⑤_____ there are more pollutants, for example, and they may not be able to afford fresh green foods为非限制性定语从句,关系词修饰前面的地点,在从句中做状语。故填where。
故填their。
not…but… 故填but。

Dear Chris,
I'm so honored to serve as your guide to a local restaurant to taste traditional Chinese food. The restaurant enjoys a good reputation and has won a China Time-honored Brand title. The environment is clean and elegant, not to mention its high-quality dishes as well as its top services. The traditional and unique soup dumplings are its specialty, which I do believe you will have a good feast on.
By the way, it is convenient to get there by bus, for it is just within easy reach of the downtown. We will meet at the bus stop near our school this Sunday morning. Bus No. 9 will directly take us there.
Wish you a good time.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
Duluth was merely a town of over a hundred thousand people. Alex had then become a wealthy businessman, who was well known in the town. The postmaster delivered the letter to him easily. When Alex received this letter 21 years after he wrote the thank-you one, he quickly sent a return letter acknowledging his receipt of their letter and promising to help bring the Jewish family to America. The entire family was successfully brought over to the town of Duluth that year. Alex settled them down and helped them be employed.
Paragraph 2:
The kindness that Herr Rosenau had given to a stranger many years earlier had come full circle. Because of their kindness, Herr Rosenau and his family were spared from the horrible fate of their fellow German Jews. The kindness that they had so warmly given to others without desiring the payment in return had come back to them with profits. The entire family was saved by Alex Lurye, or rather in a sense, they were saved by themselves.
