For the past 20 years, the Touching China annual people award has honored people from all walks of life across the country. They are people who warm our hearts with their actions. On March 3 2022, the 2021 Touching China Award ceremony aired on CCTV. Ten inspirational role models were on the list, Yang Zhenning is one of them.
When mentioning the greatest theoretical physicists in the world, Yang Zhenning is a name never to be forgotten.
Yang was born on September 22, 1922, in Hefei Anhui, China, and grew up in the peaceful and academical atmosphere of the campus of Tsinghua University. From a young age he had an interest in physics. At the age of 12, Yang showed his great ambition to win a Nobel Prize after being attracted by a book about the unknowns of the universe.
With this goal in mind, Yang studied hard. After getting a master’s degree in Tsinghua University in 1944, Yang got the opportunity to further his studies in the United States. There he met another Chinese student, Tsung-dao Lee (李政道), who shared the same interests, and they often discussed the physics issues together.
In 1957, the two jointly proposed the theory of parity non-conservation in weak interactions (弱相互作用中宇称不守恒), which made a great contribution to high-energy physics. Once the theory was put forward, it immediately caused a sensation (轰动) in the physics community.
Months later, the two won the Nobel Prize in Physics.
It let other Chinese people know that Chinese scientists could stand out in the global science community and be on the global frontier (前沿) to compete with their peers.
At the Nobel Banquet, Yang also expressed his pride, saying, “I am as proud of my Chinese heritage and background as I am devoted to modern science, a part of human civilization of Western origin.”
No matter where he has been, Yang Zhenning has always had his motherland in mind.
However, the frozen Sino-US relationship prevented Chinese scientists who obtained (获得) doctoral degrees from the US like Yang from returning to China.
In 1971, Yang finally got the chance to return to China for a visit. Later, to support domestic education, Yang sold a mansion in the US, donating all the money to Tsinghua University. In 2003, Yang returned to China and also taught at Tsinghua.
Under his influence, many overseas Chinese also returned to China to make contributions, such as Turing Award winner Yao Qizhi, physicist Wu Xiaogang, mathematician Zhang Shouwu.

To create their images, she spent much effort and time checking historical records or discussing the details with experts.
In her spare time, she also travels to different countries including Germany, Australia, the US and New Zealand to tell people about Chinese stories seen on kites and the traditional ways of making kites. “I’m an inheritor of the culture. You and I can tell one face from another, but can computers do the same with few mistakes At an earlier time, many people thought it was impossible, but now, the development of technology has made it come true.
New technology like facial recognition (脸部识别) technology helps to make our lives better and more convenient in many ways. People can easily come into their office buildings and check e-mails by using it. It can also help the police to find missing kids and bad people by sending the pictures taken from video cameras on the streets to the facial recognition system. More and more shoppers use their e-wallets with the new technology to pay for things they buy in the shopping malls and many kinds of stores.
In the fall of 2017, Apple even used this technology to open the smart-phone in no more than one second. However, what is facial recognition technology and how does the system make it
First, facial recognition technology checks the space between eyes, the eye color, the ear size and the lip thickness. Then the system makes a record of your face and saves it in the database (数据库). That is to say, if you want to get the right to go into some places or to do something, you just look at the camera and let your picture run through the database.
Once the system checks your face and finds that it is correct, you can then get the right to go into the places or to do something.
However, is there any way to fool the facial recognition system The answer is yes. Although it is an amazing technology, it sometimes doesn’t work. The following are some examples.
37. What can we know about facial recognition technology from Paragraph 2

C. It lets stores make more money. D. It is the most useful technology worldwide.
38. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. The camera. B. The information of the face.
C. The smartphone. D. The right place.
39. What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 4
A. How the system works.
B How much the system costs.
C. Why the system is so popular.
D. How many faces the system checks.
40. Which of the following may the writer talk about in the following paragraph

Food waste has become a big problem these days. It not only causes environmental pollution, but also destroys (毁掉) the fruit of farmers’ hard work. And there are still many people around the world who don’t have enough food to eat.
Knowing the importance of avoiding wasting food, I always try my best to do it. For example, I order just enough food when I’m eating at a restaurant and I often take the leftovers home if I can’t finish the dishes. I always clear my plate every time I eat at home and school as well.
By doing my part to save food, I get a sense of achievement and satisfaction. I also realize that we can all make a difference as long as we take action.

When mentioning he greatest theoretical physicists in the world, Yang Zhenning is a name never to be forgotten.

Known as the birthplace of kites, Weifang in Shandong province has a long history of making kites. According to local artisans (工匠), the Weifang kite-making can date back to 2,000 years ago. At first, they were often used for measuring distances and communicating. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), kites started to be popular among ordinary people as entertainment(娱乐). In 2006, the Weifang kite-making was included in the national-level intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) lists.
Yang Hongwei, 56, was born into a kite-making family. Yang often saw kites with bright colors and different shapes in her grandfather’s workshop. “Every time I see these beautiful kites, my sadness and down feelings go away,” said Yang. On Yang’s kites, people can see not only common styles like butterflies and swallows, but also some prints telling Chinese traditional stories, legends and history. For example, she once made a kite showing a phoenix head (凤头) lined with paintings of 50 famous women in Chinese history on each side. Though the idea was cool, the process was not easy. Yang said that each woman had different characters in appearance, clothing and the makeup style.
A. It helps us a lot in our lives. B. It helps us go anywhere fast.

A. The camera.
A. Why the technology is convenient.
B. When and where the technology can’t work.
C. How the technology becomes more popular.
D. Who can make the most use of the technology.
