Resting my head on Helen’s shoulder, I put my arms round her waist(腰). She drew me to her, and we rested it silence.
We had not sat long before another person came in.
Some heavy clouds. swept from the sky by a rising wind, had left the moon bright; and her light, coming in through a window near, shone full on both of us and on the coming person, Miss Temple.
“I came on purpose to find you, Jane Eyre, ” she said. “I want you in my room, and as Helen Burns is with you, she may come too.”
We followed Miss Temple to her apartment. It had a good fire, and looked cheerful.
Miss Temple told Helen Burns to be seated in a low armchair on one side of the fireplace. She herself took another. She called me to her side.
“Is it all over ” she asked, looking down at my face. “Have you cried your sadness away ”
“I am afraid I shall never do that. ”
“Why ”
“Because I have been wrongly accused(指责), and you and everybody else, will now think me bad.”
“We shall think you what you prove yourself to be, my child. Continue to act as a good girl, and you will satisfy us.”
“Shall I, Miss Temple ”
“You will,” said Miss Temple. “You have been accused of lying when you were little. Tell us the truth, but add nothing and exaggerate(夸大) nothing.”
I made up my mind that I would be most modest and most correct. Having thought for a few minutes about where to start, I told her all the story of my sad childhood.

When we first moved here, we didn’t have a garden. Mike and I talked about making a large vegetable garden somewhere in our yard, but we couldn’t agree on the place. Before we went ahead and dug up the grass, we spent some time thinking about where it would work best, . At last, we chose an old sandbox(沙坑) in our front yard to become our garden.
We dreamed about a lively garden with lots of vegetables, We asked many people what we should do to turn this sandbox into a space so that plants can grow in it. And they gave us lots of ideas. My sister was the most knowledgeable, so we listened mostly to her. At first, Mike made a wood fence(栅栏) and I painted it with the kids. We chose a darker color because it would fit our light-grey house.
Next, Mike dug 17 holes. Then we filled them with soil(土壤). It was still too cold to plant anything, so for days I just stared out of the window at these holes. To me, it looked much too untidy. I advised filling those holes back and digging new ones. This time we ended up with 10. Much better.
Over the next a few weeks, I worked on getting everything planted in my garden. I started by planting green onions. But I was too excited and planted it too early. Right away it was clear that it wasn’t going to survive. I had to give it up and try something else. Then my next door neighbor gave me red roses to put in my garden. A few days later we went to a greenhouse and came back not with green onions but peppers, tomatoes and so on. Clearly the vegetable and flower garden was slowly becoming our dream garden.
I love the way it turned out. This garden will always remind me of my sister.

DNA is the whole“map”of the human body. It is something that all humans have, and it tells the body what to do. DNA is the reason why we look like our parents, because we get some of their DNA to make our own.
People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time. In the 1860s, Mr. Mendel discovered why we look similar to other people in our family. It is because of the small things called genes(基因) in our body. In 1953, two scientists, Watson and Crick, found out that those small parts are real messages. They are written in the DNA with a special language.
In 1961, scientists found the first “word”that they could understand in that language. It shows how DNA tells the cell (细胞) to build its parts. So far, scientists have the words in the DNA map, but we do not understand what they all do. By understanding just what one“word" means, we can help to save people from several illnesses. So the more we understand, the more doctors will be able to do.
Most people hope that this will help to make better medicine to help sick people. Other people worry that when we learn more “words” and find out more information, we will use it in the wrong way, such as just to make people more attractive(有魅力的), or to stop sick people getting jobs.

If we want to grow as people, we can’t just depend on our own evaluation评价) of how we re doing. We also need to know what other people think about our performance. Receiving feedback(反馈) from others can help us look at the larger picture and show us a way forward to success. However, someone has to give that feedback, and sometimes, that someone will be you. How should you deal with this
First things first—if you notice a situation in which some feedback would be helpful, give it as soon as you can. If you wait until the matter disappears from the person’s mind, he might not understand what you’re trying to tell him. Take the person to a safe, comfortable place and offer your advice in private.
When you re giving feedback, it’s important to keep in mind that no one likes to be told they’ re doing a bad job. Make sure you give an equal(相等的) amount of good feedback to balance out(抵消) anything bad. Like the saying goes, “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.”
All good feedback shares something in common. First, it should help achieve a goal. It’s less useful to tell your friends that their dish tastes “interesting” than it is to suggest adding a little salt, Feedback should also look to the future. You can’t change what’s already happened, but you can prevent it from happening again. Tell your friends they should take more notes in class instead of talking about how they should have studied harder for the history exam they failed.
Finally, don’t think your suggestion is the only correct way to deal with a situation. You might even end up with some feedback on your feedback. Don’t take it personally it can help you give better advice next time.
1. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to
A. Seeing the picture. B. Giving feedback. C. Receiving feedback. D. Showing a way to success.

A You might forget to tell the person later on.
B Perhaps the person wants the feedback right away.
C Maybe the person needs time to understand your advice.
D. If you wait too long, the person might forget what’s happened.
3. What can we infer from the underlined saying in Paragraph 3
A. It’s helpful to keep on giving bad feedback. do B. It’s difficult to do a good job all the time.
C. Ir’s better to balance good and bad feedback. D. It’s important to think twice before giving feedback.
4. The passage is mainly about
A. what characteristics good feedback includes B. how people should give feedback properly
C. the differences between good and bad feedback D. the importance of giving and receiving feedback

Each of us has dreams and goals for our future. What makes us study and progress each day is closely connected with our personal dreams and goals.
Then why do you have dreams and goals but still end up with nothing What separates successful people from the dreamers is their persistent(锲而不舍的) action. When you learn your lessons in school, you must work hard and not give up. You will often find some of your lessons very hard, Try and keep trying, and you’ll be sure to successfully deal with any difficulty you meet with. If we have a hard lesson today, let’s try our best to learn it well and then we shall be prepared for a harder one tomorrow.
This is the famous formula for success:
Dream→Believe→Achieve
Most people have what they want (Dream) and think they can realize their dreams (Believe). But then they do nothing, They just imagine their dreams can come true. When they get tired of waiting and lose a lot, they get bored. They say angrily how terrible their life is.
I personally believe that if you really want to achieve your dreams and goals in life, you have to add one thing to your success formula:
Dream→Believe→Act→Achieve
For me, the “Act” is the most important thing for success and that’s to “Take Persistent Action(Act)”. If you say “I can’t do it” and give up, you can never do anything valuable. However, “I’ll try” creates wonders. Let’s remember that there will be obstacles in our life. We must face them bravely and solve them. Success is not something that falls from the sky. Most successful people made their dreams come true because of their persistent action.
Please remember: Action is the bridge that connects our dreams and goals to reality.
1. What should you do when you find your lessons very hard
A. Ask people for help. B. Try and keep trying. C. Get ready to create wonders. D. Prepare for a harder one.
2. Which does the writer add to the famous formula
A. Act. B. Achieve. C. Connect. D. Create.
3. What does the underlined word “obstacles” mean
A. Dangers. B. Joys. C. Wonders. D. Difficulties.
4. Why does the writer use the formula “Dream→Believe→Act→Achieve”
A. To support his idea. B. To ask readers to explain it.
C. To show what his goals are. D. To compare it to a bridge.
5. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A. Doing something valuable B. Studying hard and making progress
C. Realizing dreams with persistent action D. Separating successful people from dreamers

There are millions of different kinds of living things on Earth, but how many do you see every day You often see the big colourful animals, like birds, rabbits, and fish. But loo more closely. Can you see the small ones, too Insects(昆虫) make up 80 percent of all the world’s living kinds. Look at the ground. Imagine you could look under the ground. Many small living things with one cell live there. Life is everywhere around us, in every cubic foot(a foot = 12 inches).
David Littschwager is a photographer who wanted to find out how many living things lived in one cubic foot. So he made a 12-inch cube with a green metal frame. And then he put it in five habitats(栖息地). He chose a forest reserve (Costa Rica), a coral reef(French Polynesia), a mountain(South Africa), a saltwater bay(the USA), and a park(the USA). Three weeks were spent at each place. He watched, counted, and took photos of everything down to 1 millimeter in size—that crawled(爬) or flew into the cube.
The results were amazing. Littschwager found both common and rare living things. He discovered many new living kinds. like a strange transparent octopus that is the size of a fingernail! In total, more than a thousand living things were photographed. Littschwager said the One Cubic Foot experience was like “finding treasure”. David Littschwager also found that the highest biodiversity(生物多样性) in the reef was in the dead coral. The dead coral is suitable for sea living things of all sizes to grow in. Although the coral reef had the widest range of biodiversity, all the other habitats were also full of life, even the city park!
