Activity 5
Plastic bags cause litter and are a danger to animals.
It takes hundreds of years for them to break down.
When we turn off a device, it goes into stand-by mode.
Local food does not need to be transported long distances and kept cool during transport.
Taking a shower uses less water than a bath.
Why do people believe these statements are true
Plastic bags cause litter and are a danger to animals.
It takes hundreds of years for them to break down.
Making a paper bag uses _________ as much energy as making a plastic bag and up to three times _________________ and produces more ________________.

What kind of bag is a better choice
A reusable bag is a better choice.
What else can be reused in our daily life

stand-by
leak from
“off”
Why is the word “off” put into a quotation mark
Because the appliance is not really off, and it goes into stand-by mode and still uses power.
What can you learn from this “green truth”
What else can we do to save energy (electricity or water)
We need to remove our cellphone charger (充电器) from the power supply, and also unplug other household appliances, for example, washing machine, television, reading lamp and so on.

Retell & Review
Activity 8
Retell the passage based on the mind map.
Paper shopping bags
time to break down; energy and water; greenhouse gases; a reusable bag
electric devices
power leak in stand-by mode; remove the plug

local food

in some cases; more energy; more greenhouse gases
It depends; shower time; eight minutes
For example:
Recently, some green truths have been proved to be only half true, or even completely false. For example, the majority of people mistake paper bags as much more environmentally friendly than plastic ones. Actually, making a paper bag consumes four times as much energy as making a plastic one and up to three times the amount of water. The process also produces more greenhouse gases. Consequently, taking a reusable bag is a better choice.
The 1_______(major) of us take steps to save energy and reduce pollution. But recently, some “green truths” 2_______________(show) to be only half true, or even 3_________(complete) false.
Plastic bags cause litter and are a danger to wild animals, 4______mistake them for food. So people think paper bags are the better environmental choice. 5_________, making a paper bag uses four times as much energy 6___ making a plastic one. In fact, both kinds of bags are bad 7_____ the environment. You should unplug a device rather than turn it off when 8_______(leave) your home. Is eating local food good for the environment The answer is “No”. 9___is the production of food, not its transport, that uses most of the energy. People often thinks it`s better to take a shower than a bath, but it`s not right. It depends on how long you spend in the shower and how large your bath is. 10_________ , the key is to keep your shower time as short as possible.

Some tips!
1 Use these questions to help plan your talk.
Which “green truth” are you going to talk about
Why do people believe it is “green”
Why is it not completely true
What can you do to become “greener”
2 Organise your talk following the steps below.
Start your talk by stating the topic.
Describe your chosen “green truth” in more detail.
Explain why it is not completely true.
End your talk by encouraging your audience to become “greener”.
Topic: Are electric cars really “green”
Description: Electric cars run on electricity and they don’t burn gasoline at all; therefore they don’t emit CO2, thus creating “zero emission” (零排放).
For example:
Explanation: Although driving an electric car does not cause any air pollution, the pollution mainly comes from the production of its battery and the electricity used to keep it running. The production of the electric batteries requires lithium(锂). A large amount of energy is used on mining and processing this metal. Meanwhile, the electricity by which electric cars are powered is mainly from burning coal or gas. All of these contribute to carbon emissions. Consequently, electric cars aren’t really green.
Take actions now!
What can we do to become “greener” or become really green, not just green
Changing Your Personal Habits
Carry a reusable water bottle so you will not need bottled water.
Use reusable bags while you’re shopping.
Reuse items to save them from the landfill.
Reduce the amount of time you spend using electronics(电子产品).
Buy second-hand products or borrow items instead of buying them new.
Turn lights off when they aren’t in use
Creating a Green Home
Cut down on your water use.
Line dry your clothing instead of using a dryer.
Eat less meat because it takes more resources to raise.
Recycle paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and metal cans.
Staying Green on the Move
Walk or ride a bike to some places if you live close enough.
Use public transportation to travel long distances.
Everyone can't do everything, but everyone can do something.
Homework
Discover more green truths that are not completely true and explain these ideas by using the causes-effects-measures.
Thanks for watching!
