Welcome to the unit
教学目标
By the end of this section, students will be able to:
1. name famous festivals around the world;
2. describe one of the Chinese festivals;
3. develop proper attitudes to different festivals.
教学重难点
1. To describe their experiences in Chinese traditional festivals;
2. To compare the Eastern and Western traditional festivals and find out the similarities.

Step 1 The teacher introduces Robert A. Heinlein briefly. The teacher helps students understand the quote by asking them to translate it and think about the deep meaning behind it. Students talk about the history and customs of the Dragon Boat Festival. 通过翻译单元开头名人语录，理解其含义，直接进入本单元话题。通过谈论端午节的历史渊源及传统风俗，让学生初步感知风俗习惯和个人、民族密不可分。 5’ Individual work Group work
Step 2 Students discuss with their group members what other Chinese traditional festivals they know and what people do at these festivals. Students discuss with their group members what festivals they know in other countries. 学生由谈论中国传统节日与风俗转而谈论外国传统节日与风俗，为了解后续视频中三个节日内容做好铺垫。 10’ Pair work

Step 3 Students watch the video about festivals of other countries. Students are encouraged to complete the sentences according to what they see and hear in the video. Yi Peng Lantern Festival is celebrated in Chiang Mai, Thailand as a way to __________________. Midsummer’s Day is celebrated in Sweden for people to _______________________________. The Day of the Dead, which lasts _____________________, is a festival in Mexico for people to ____________________________. 学生通过观看义蓬元宵节、瑞典仲夏节和墨西哥亡灵节三段视频，补全信息，进而了解国外节日的传统风俗与文化。 14’ Individual work Group work
