Lead-in
Step 1 The teacher draws students’ attention on the title of the unit: Be sporty, be healthy, mentioning that the relationship of sports and health will be explored in the unit. The teacher quotes Cai Yuanpei to emphasize the importance of a healthy body and at the same time introduces Cai Yuanpei. Step 3 The teacher has students read the jokes on Page 15 and work in pairs to discuss the first question listed on Page 15. Step 4 The teacher explains the jokes to students one by one, focusing on the pun used in each joke. A pun is a play on words that produces a humourous effect by using a word that suggests two or more meanings, or by exploiting similar sounding words that have different meanings. Joke 1 Q: What do soccer players and magicians have in common A: Both do hat-tricks! Hat-tricks: Three points, goals, etc. scored by the same player in a particular match or game; three successes achieved by one person. Tricks done by a magician with a hat. Joke 2 Q: What is the hardest part about skydiving A: The ground! Hard: Difficult to do, understand or answer. Solid, firm or stiff and difficult to bend or break. Joke 3 Q: What animal is best at hitting baseballs A: A bat! Bat: A piece of wood with a handle, which is made in various shapes and sizes, and used for hitting the ball in games such as baseball, cricket and table tennis. An animal like a mouse with wings, which flies and feeds at night. Joke 4 Q: Why can’t Cinderella play soccer A: Because she’s always running away from the ball. Ball: A round object used for throwing, hitting or kicking in games and sports. A large formal party with dance. Joke 5 Q: How do basketball players stay cool during the game A: They stand close to the fans. Cool: Used to show that you admire or approve of something because it is fashionable, attractive and often different. Fairly cold; not hot or warm. Fan: A person who admires somebody/something or enjoys watching or listening to somebody/something very much. Step 6 The teacher divides students into small groups of 4, and make students take turns to answer the following questions: What is your favourite sport Why do you like it Sample answer: Basketball is my favourite sport.
