Project
Doing a survey on students’ exercise habits
教学目标
By the end of this section, students will be able to:
1. make a questionnaire of an idea about their exercise habits;
2. conduct a survey on peers’ exercise according to the questionnaire;
3. gather the survey data, write a report and present the report;
4. evaluate one report from other groups and give suggestions.
教学重难点
1. To create a questionnaire to survey the exercise habits of the students;
2. To finish writing a report on the exercise habits of the students.

Preparation
Step 1 The teacher points out that to complete this project, a lot of preparation work is needed. First of all, we have to design a questionnaire. The teacher has students read silently the tip on designing questionnaire in Part B on Page 27 and helps them find out the keys when designing a questionnaire. Key elements of a questionnaire: The ideas What do you want to find out from the survey The questions There should be both closed-ended and open-ended ones. Step 2 The teacher has students discuss what to ask when they want to know others’ exercise habits. Then have them go through the questions in Part A on Page 27. How often do you exercise How long do you exercise What type of exercise do you do Where do you exercise The teacher encourages students to think about more ideas about how to get to know others’ exercise habits. Step 3 The teacher shows students a sample questionnaire and encourages them to figure out the general features of a successful questionnaire. General features: A brief introduction to the purpose of the survey Questions focusing on the ideas with both closed-ended and open-ended ones. Implementation
Step 5 The teacher makes it clear to students about the general steps they may take to write a successful report on exercise habits. 向学生呈现完成该项目所要经历的几个阶段,提高学生完成项目任务的有序性,提高效率。 3’ Group Work
Step 6 The teacher draws students’ attention to planning section and introduces the task. Planning—Conducting a survey 1. Come to class with prepared question lists on exercise habits. (Done before class) 2. Discuss the questions within groups of four to revise the questions and decide what to be included in the questionnaire. (Done before class) 3. Step 7 The teacher focuses students’ attention on preparing section and introduces the task. Preparing—Collecting and analyzing the data 1. Collect the data from the survey by using the following as a sample. (Done before class) 2. Discuss in groups. Analyze the statistics, figure out the possible causes of the situation, draw conclusions and offer suggestions or possible solutions. Step 8 The teacher focuses students’ attention on producing section and introduces the task. Producing—Writing a report 1. Each student takes the responsibility of writing about one or two questions on the questionnaire and puts down what have been discussed beforehand. 2. Exchange the drafts within group members and do some proof-reading. Step 9 The teacher draws students’ attention to presenting section and introduces the task. Step 10 The teacher guides students to do peer evaluation, using the tools below. 1. Evaluate the reports of the other groups and make comments. * Ideas * Statistics * Language 2. Homework 1. Continue to polish up the report, and put it up in the classroom for further evaluation. 2. Read the reports from other groups. Offer advice on ideas, analysis of the data and suggestions. 2’
