Knowledge and ability objects:
1. Key vocabulary and phrases:
look like, make 72 changes, turn...into, object, unless, hide, tail, magic, stick, excite, Western, become interested in.
2. Target language:
This is because he can make 72 changes to his shape and size, turning himself into different animals and objects.
But unless he can hide his tail, he cannot turn himself into a man.
Sometimes he can make the stick so small that he can keep it in his ears.
And as soon as the TV program came out more than 30 years ago, Western children became interested in reading this story because the clever Monkey King keeps fighting to help the weak and never gives up.

1. To enable students to know more about the background of the Monkey King.
2. To enable students to find out the general idea of each paragraph and key points in reading.

Teaching procedures and activities:
Step 1 Warm-up and lead in
1. Game: Listen and guess what story the music is about.
2. Talk about students’ favorite character in Journey to the West.

Step 2 Pre-reading
Watch a video about the TV program Journey to the West in English.

Step 3 While-reading
Task 1 Skim for the main idea of the passage.
A. a new TV program called Monkey. C. the Monkey King, Sun Wukong.
B. traditional Chinese books. D. the 72 changes of the Monkey King.

Task 2 Read the whole passage and match the main idea of each paragraph.
Paragraph1 The Monkey King is not just a normal monkey——he can do magic things.
Paragraph2 Western children are also becoming interested in the story of the Monkey King.
Paragraph3 The Monkey King is new to pupils in England but not to Chinese children.

Task 3 Read paragraph 1 carefully and find the answers to the questions.

Who is the main character

Task 4 Read paragraph 2 carefully and fill in the mind map of the Monkey King.

Task 5 Read paragraph 3 carefully and watch a video. Then find the reasons why the Monkey King is so popular.

Task 6 Make a summary. Listen and fill in the blanks and try to retell the passage.

Step 4 Post-reading
Group work: Let students describe a character which has positive power with group members, then share the character in front of the classroom to let others guess who he or she is.
For example:
She is a brave girl.
She has no brothers.
Her father is very old.
She took her father’s place to fight in the army.

Step 5 Emotional aim
Show more traditional Chinese culture to students like kongfu, taiji, traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese calligrapher, Confucius Institute, Peking opera and so on. Then I’ll tell the students that they should be proud of traditional Chinese culture and adhere to the culture confidence.
