What would the world be like if cars could drive themselves Imagine seeing an empty car passing by on its way to pick up its owner, or a car full of passengers who are reading, listening to music or even sleeping. But none of them are worried about the road ahead.
Well, all of this could be the future of driving. There are several companies, including Google, working on driverless cars. So far, no Google self-driven cars have gotten a traffic ticket (罚单), but some of them have been in accidents when other cars hit them.
These cars are now still in the testing stages (阶段). But, if the tests are successful, these electric self-driven cars could be put into use very soon.
The cars are so special that they can take the place of drivers during certain situations. They are able to park themselves, or slow down when they notice objects close by. They can also control the speed if there is danger.
Scientists and engineers believe, with the help of wireless signals (无线信号) , cameras and GPS, creating a safe self-driven car might be possible. The cause of deadly (致死的) road accidents is usually careless drivers or bad conditions. The self-driven car may be able to prevent these. However, some people don’t like the idea. American lawyer Whit Drake does not believe these cars are safe. He thinks that technologies can also be mistakes.

To the Editor,
I am writing as a member of One-on-One,the sixth-grade mentoring (指导) group. Our group is two years old and made up of 14 students. Our task is to help students reach their goals through mentoring. We hope the readers of this school newspaper will join our group. This is my first year as a mentor, but I have already learned that everyone taking part in mentoring gets something out of it.
I was assigned (分配) to a mentor last year. Mentoring was one of the best things that happened to me. I was able to turn the corner at an important point in my studies, going from nearly failing math to passing it. It still amazes me that I completely changed from almost hating math to loving it! Would you believe I’m even thinking of studying math in college? Even if I don’t, I have skills that I will use for the rest of my life. My own experience made me feel certain of becoming a mentor this year and helping other students like myself. Now that I am a mentor, I realize what a good feeling you get from helping someone else and knowing that you’re making a difference in his or her life.In many situations, lasting friendships are made as well. My mentor and I hit it off right away. And we’re still good friends today.
Becoming a mentor is a serious commitment(承诺).Mentors spend one hour every week with the student they are mentoring.Considering your responsibilities,it may be difficult to add another commitment to your schedule. But I hope you will at least consider the possibility.
Thank you for considering our invitation. We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Mark Lopez

1.(2021,十堰)Passage 1
To forgive is a virtue(美德), but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.
How should you start to forgive? Try the following steps:
Calm yourself. You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.
Don’t wait for an apology(道歉). Many times the person who hurt you does not mean to apologize. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time. Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.
Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who causes you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.
Try to see things from your offender’s angle(角度). If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness fear and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.
Don’t forget to forgive yourself. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge. It can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.

2.Passage 2
As the proverb says, “Your tongue has the power of life and death.” This means that your words have power to finally cause things to happen, even life or death.
We may all experience the power of words in our life, even when we were very young. A child is blamed (责备) by teachers or parents, and after that, he might probably think of himself as a bad child. Most kids have that experience. They say it is important to praise children four times for each negative (负面的) word. Blaming will make things worse, while positive words are helpful especially when being in trouble or in need.
When we fail the exam, encouraging words from our teachers or parents make us work harder at our lessons. Encouraging words can go quite a long way. They lift people up. For example, encouraging words to someone who is sad can help them make it through the day. Words can have a powerful effect on your brain. And it will in turn (相应地) have a great influence on your action.
Everything you do depends on what you choose to do. It’s not your parents, your past relationships or your job, but you and only you that are responsible for every goal you set. If you have dreams in life, write them down and speak them out. Your words are likely to bring you out something amazing.
The Power of Words Your words have power to finally cause things to happen, even life or death.

Perhaps you’ve watched the movie Better Days, which focuses on bullying (霸凌) at school. It has made the public begin to discuss how to deal with school bullying. A survey of primary and middle school students showed that more than 32 percent of students have experienced bullying at school, Global Times reported.
In fact, the government is taking action to solve this problem. On October 26, 2019, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress reviewed a draft revision (修订草案) to the law on the protection of children for the first time.
The draft asks schools to set up rules to prevent bullying and to report any bullying incidents (事件) to parents. They are also asked to work with the government while solving such incidents.
The draft also includes a new chapter—Internet Protection. Its purpose is to make sure of children’s online safety. For example, it says that places that provide Internet services for children, such as schools and libraries, should have protective software (防护软件) on their computers. It also asks online game sellers to be careful in choosing their products and to consider the ways to keep children away from the games that are not good for them.

People have been using the wind’s energy for a long, long time. More than 5,000 years ago, ancient Egyptians made boats powered by the wind. In 200 B.C., people used windmills (风车) in China.
Today, we collect the wind’s energy with wind turbines (涡轮). A turbine is similar to a windmill, it is a very tall tower with two or three blades (叶片) at the top. These blades are turned by the wind. The blades turn a generator (发电机) located inside the tower, which creates power.
Groups of wind turbines are known as wind farms. Wind farms can be found near farmland, in narrow mountain passes, and even in the ocean, where there are stronger winds.Wind farms create power for nearby homes, schools and other buildings.
In places like the midwest and along coasts, winds can provide cheap power. Another great advantage of wind power is that it is a clean form of energy. Wind turbines do not burn oil or coal and do not pollute the air.
Wind is not always an ideal source of energy, however. Wind speed changes from time to time, depending on the time of day, weather and location. Wind turbines can be also dangerous for bats and birds. These animals cannot always tell how fast the blades are moving and crash into them.

Aunt Jia had a snack stand (摊位) in our neighborhood. Her snacks never failed to satisfy my stomach. What’s more, she was always patient with her customers. Even COVID-19 didn’t influence her business.
One day, during the last Spring Festival, I saw a large family visiting her stand. It formed a heart-warming picture: Each family member was enjoying being together. As they were leaving, I noticed Aunt Jia felt a bit sad.
I was amazed. In my experience, she was always smiling. I went forward and ordered my favorite snack. When she was wrapping(打包), I couldn’t help saying, “Happy New Year, Aunt Jia! Why don’t you take a break ” Aunt Jia looked surprised, but she soon replied, “Happy New Year! I love working here in this city. It’s too cold and snowy in my hometown.”I became more curious (好奇的). “Where do you come from Aren’t your family waiting for you to come home for the celebration ” Aunt Jia stopped for a few seconds. “They sure are,” she answered gently. “But I have to stay here. I’m from a mountain area, where it would not be easy to make money. I’d be comfortable if I were home now. But in order to live a better life, I must work hard.”

Cao Yuan was born in 1996. As he was a young kid, he liked to learn on his own. He was not afraid of asking difficult questions. He spent two years finishing his middle and high school classes. At the age of 14, he started taking classes at a university. Although Cao is young,he shows maturity(成熟)beyond his age.
When he was 24, he published(发表)two papers in Nature on May 6th.
Nature is one of the top science magazines in the world. Many scientists dream of publishing their papers in it. But it is really hard. One has to make a very important discovery.
Cao’s papers are about graphene(石墨烯)—the thinnest and

However, Cao found that sometimes graphene can change. It can change between a superconductor(超导体)—a material that conducts electricity(导电), and an insulator(绝缘体)—a material that doesn’t conduct electricity. With it, scientists can find cheaper and easier ways to use electricity.

Passage 2
Self-love is the most important if you want to find out your full potentials(潜质) on earth. Accepting who you are makes you feel that you are good enough.
You are good enough does not mean you are perfect. Nobody is perfect. Being good enough means you accept who you are and believe in yourself. The truth is, opinions of other people make it hard for you to find the good part of yourself. So, you need to believe in yourself instead of caring what people think of you. Be sure you are doing it for yourself, not for someone else. Just make efforts to improve yourself and then you are sure to become the best you can be, or a better version (版本) of yourself.
What should we do when someone is stuck (深陷) in the ocean of not feeling good enough Here are some suggestions to help. First, be a good listener. Listening to someone will not only make them feel they are worthy but also make you know better what they are going through. Then you will get the idea of how to cheer them. Besides, always encourage others. When people talk about their dreams, tell them it’s possible that all dreams can come true. So, loving others in this way will make them feel good enough.

A boy helped his father look after their wooden barrels(桶) on the farm. Every morning he cleaned up every barrel and then put them in order. ①But the wind blew the clean barrels here and there during the night.
②The boy was very angry, so he wrote a letter to the wind on every barrel, “Please don’t blow down my barrels.”
After seeing that, his father asked him with a smile, “Can the wind read your letter ” The little boy said, “I don’t know, but I have no way of doing with the wind.”
The next morning, when the little boy ran to see the barrels, he found that the wind still blew the barrels down again. He couldn’t help crying. His father said, “Boy, don’t worry. We may have no way of stopping the wind, but we can have our own ways to control the barrels.”
Then the little boy stopped crying and thought over and over again. He finally found out a way. The wind blew down the barrels because they were too empty. So he collected some water from the river and poured it into those barrels. On the third morning, the little boy went out, and saw the barrels were in good order.
The little boy told his father happily, “If we don’t want the wind to blow down the barrels, we have no way to the wind, but we have ways to ourselves and the barrels. It’s a very simple way.”
