On Nov.12, 2020, Shanghai held the Chen Bochui International Children’s Literature Award(陈伯吹国际儿童文学奖). Ten children’s books from several countries, including(包括) China, won prizes(奖). But do you know who Chen Bochui (1906—1997) is
People call Chen “the Andersen of the East(东方安徒生)”. Hans Christian Andersen was a famous Danish children’s writer. Like him, Chen wrote many children’s stories himself. He also translated(翻译) many children’s books, including The Wizard of Oz(《绿野仙踪》) and The Adventures of Don Quixote(《吉诃德先生的冒险故事》).
Chen was born in Shanghai. He started writing his stories at 17. In his twenties, Japan started a war against China. Chen wrote stories like Children in the Firing Line(《火线上的孩子们》) to encourage young people to be strong.
Chen believed that good stories can have an influence(影响) on children’s beliefs and thoughts. In 1981, Chen set up the Children’s Literature Award with all of his savings—55,000 yuan.
