Christmas Day, on December 25, is one of the most festive Christian holidays in many countries around the world. It celebrates Jesus' birth.
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) was an English writer, poet and university professor, best known as the author of some of the world`s most popular high-fantasy novels. With his limitless imagination, he created new worlds for his readers to explore. His novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have been made into films.
The Hobbit is a children’s fantasy novel. It was published on 21 Sept. 1937. The book remains popular and is recognized as a classic in children’s literature. Personal growth and forms of heroism are central themes of the story. The work has many adaptations for stage, screen, radio, board games and video games.
The Lord of Rings is an epic high fantasy novel. The story began as a sequel (续集) to The Hobbit, but eventually developed into a much larger work. Written in stages between 1937 and 1949, The Lord of the Rings is one of the best-selling novels ever written, with over 150 million copies sold.
The Real Father Christmas
Read the passage and find out what Letters from Father Christmas is about and why Tolkien wrote these letters.
Letters from Father Christmas is a collection of Tolkien’s letters to his four children at Christmas. The letters told wonderful stories about Father Christmas’s life and adventures at the North Pole.
Tolkien wrote these letters because he wanted to keep Father Christmas alive for his four children.
Why could Letters from Father Christmas be a perfect book
The book keeps Father Christmas alive as long as possible for the people who regard Christmas as a special time of year.
What made the letters special
An envelope with a North Pole stamp and a handwritten letter beautifully illustrated.
Besides, the letters told wonderful stories.
The letters did change as Tolkien’s children got older.
What are those wonderful stories
They are about Father Christmas’s life and adventures at the North Pole.
In one letter, Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas’s house.
In another letter, Father Christmas complained about how he could not stop his helpers playing games with the toys.
How did the letters affect his children
“…but if you find that not many of the things you asked for have come, and not perhaps quite as many as sometimes, remember that this Christmas all over the world there are a terrible number of poor and starving people.”
Tolkien expressed his love for his children in such a special way. They not only enjoyed the wonderful stories but also shared the true spirit of giving at Christmas time.
