LONDON—A British judge on Thursday sentenced a businessman who sold fake(假冒的) bomb detectors(探测器) to 10 years in prison, saying the man hadn't cared about potentially deadly consequences.
It is believed that James McCormick got about $77.8 million from the sales of his detectors—which were based on a kind of golf ball finder—to countries including Iraq, Belgium and Saudi Arabia.
McCormick, 57, was convicted(判罪) of cheats last month and sentenced Thursday at the Old Bailey court in London
“Your cheating conduct in selling a great amount of useless equipment simply for huge profit promoted a false sense of security and in all probability materially contributed to causing death and injury to innocent people,” Judge Richard Hone told McCormick. “You have neither regret, nor shame, nor any sense of guilt.”
The detectors, sold for up to $42,000 each, were said to be able to find such dangerous objects as bombs under water and from the air. But in fact they “lacked any grounding in science” and were of no use.
McCormick had told the court that he sold his detectors to the police in Kenya, the prison service in Hong Kong, the army in Egypt and the border control in Thailand.
“I never had any bad results from customers,” he said.
1.Why was McCormick sentenced to prison
A.He sold bombs.
B.He caused death of people.
C.He made detectors.
D.He cheated in business.
2.According to the judge, what McCormick had done __________.
A.increased the cost of safeguarding
B.lowered people's guard against danger
C.changed people's idea of social security
D.caused innocent people to commit crimes
3.Which of the following is true of the detectors
A.They have not been sold to Africa.
B.They have caused many serious problems.
C.They can find dangerous objects in water.
D.They don't function on the basis of science.
4.It can be inferred from the passage that McCormick
A.sold the equipment at a low price
B.was well-known
C.did not think he had committed the crime
D.had not got such huge profit as mentioned in the text
Your cheating conduct in selling great amount of useless equipment simply for huge profit promoted a false sense of security可知McCormick的所作所为降低了人们对危险的防范,故B正确。
But in fact they “lacked any grounding in science" and were of no use可知D项正确,这种假探测器没有科学依据,是没有用的。
I never had any bad results from customers可以推断出他认为自己没有犯罪,故选C。

Medical students in California are getting real-world experience by helping the homeless on the streets of Los Angeles. They are filling gaps in the health care system while learning about
their future profession.
The patients sit on folding chairs along the sidewalk in Hollywood, as students unload supplies and medical records from a truck. They are creating a makeshift clinic on the street.
The first stage is triage, assessing the needs of the poor and homeless at this once-a-week mobile clinic. It is run by students from the University of California, Los Angeles, who operate similar clinics in different communities on other nights. They provide medicine and offer clean socks and reading glasses to those who need them. They bandage injuries and monitor vital signs.
Another charity offers nutritious meals to the patients. Students in social work and law also come to offer assistance, getting long-term help from the government or private agencies for those
people who qualify.
Physician Walter Coppenrath helped start this street clinic 12 years ago when he was a medical student. He now teaches at UCLA and sees patients at a nearby medical center.
“The care is given to those who do not get help in other places,” says medic student Steffanie Becerra. “They see us as their only point of care within the medical system where they can get their medications. A lot of people with hypertension or diabetes really have no other choice but to come here because they just cannot afford the medications elsewhere,” she explains.
The mobile clinic helps both patients and students, says undergraduate Kevin Norris, who plans to become a doctor. “We really treat them as individuals deserving respect because so many of the homeless people here in Los Angeles are really just looked down on and largely ignored by much of the population,” Norris states. He says that once a week these people get the attention and the care they deserve, and the voluntary work helps him understand his future role as a physician.
1.The once-a-week mobile clinic can provide the patients with following articles EXCEPT _______.
A.clean socks B.medicine
C.reading glasses D.nutritious meals
2.Which of the following doesn't belong to medical students' duty
A.Bandaging injuries.
B.Making sure what medical treatment the patients need.
C.Helping some patients get long-term help from the government.
D.Monitoring vital signs.
3.The author wrote the last paragraph in order to tell us ______.
A.everyone should be treated with equal respect
B.Kevin Noms is unsatisfied with the current medical system
C.Kevin Norris is happy to help the homeless people in Los Angeles
D.the experience helps both patients and medical students
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.D

【题干】 B
One morning, Ann's neighbor Tracy found a lost dog wandering around the local elementary school. She asked Ann if she could keep an eye on the dog. Ann said that she could watch it only for the day.
Tracy took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND fliers (传单), and put them in mailboxes. Meanwhile, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, warning her two sons not to fall in love with the dog. At the time, Ann's son Thomas was 10 years old, and Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation, was 21 years old.
Four days later Ann was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. When she arrived home from work, the dog threw itself against the screen door and barked madly at her. As soon as she opened the door, Riley dashed into the boys' room where Ann found Jack suffering a heart attack. Riley ran over to Jack, but as soon as Ann bent over to help him the dog went silent.
“If it hadn't come to get me, the doctor said Jack would have died,” Ann reported to a local newspaper. At this point, no one had called to claim the dog, so Ann decided to keep it.
The next morning Tracy got a call. A man named Peter recognized his lost dog and called the number on the flier. Tracy started crying, and told him, “That dog saved my friend's son.”
Peter drove to Ann's house to pick up his dog, and saw Thomas and Jack crying in the window. After a few moments Peter said, “Maybe Odie was supposed to find you, maybe you should keep it.”

C.It would be returned to Peter.
D.It would be taken away by Tracy.
【答案】4.A 5.B 6.D 7.C 8.B
Peter drove to Ann's house to pick up his dog…

British Newspapers
In Britain there are 11 national daily newspapers and most people read one of them every day. There are two kinds of newspapers. One is large in size and has many detailed articles about national and international events. These newspapers are called the serious papers or the quality papers. The other kind, called the tabloids, is smaller in size. They have more pictures and shorter articles, often about less important events or about the private lives of the well-known people. Although some people disapprove(反对) of the tabloids, more people buy them rather than the serious newspapers. The Sun, for example, which is a tabloid, is the best-selling newspaper in Britain. The tabloids are sometimes called the gutter press. And in 1997, some reporters of the tabloids were said to be involved in(卷入) the tragic (悲剧的 ) death of Princess Diana in France and they were criticized as gossipy(说人闲话的) reporters by the public.

Most of the newspapers are right-wing, which means they support the Conservative Party(保守党).These are The Daily Telegraph (serious newspaper) , The Daily Express, The Daily Mail, The Daily Star, The Sun and Today. Of the other serious newspapers, The Times, the oldest newspaper in Britain, did not formerly have one strong political view but it is now more right-wing. One afternoon last week, I saw three tearful children from my son's school being comforted by teachers. That morning, my ll-year-old son had stomach pains, retching (干呕) into a bowl. Talking to other mothers later, I heard about other children with stomachache or difficulty sleeping the night before.
What caused so much pain Sports day. Sports day might be necessary at a highly-competitive independent school, but not at a village primary school. For the children who can fly like the wind, sports day causes no problem. For those who are overweight or just not good at sport, it is a nightmare(噩梦).Even for those who enjoy running but fall halfway down the track in front of the entire school and their parents, it can prove a disaster.
Why do we put our children through this annual suffering Some may say competition is character building; or it's taking part, not winning, that's important; or that it is a tradition of school life. I just felt great pity for those children in tears or in pain.
Team games at the end of sports day produced some close races, wild enthusiasm, lots of shouting-and were fun to watch. More importantly, the children who were not so fast or quick at
passing the ball were hidden a little from everyone's eyes. Some of them also had the thrill of being on the winning side.
I wish that sports day could be abandoned and replaced with some other less-competitive event. Perhaps an afternoon of team games, with a few races for those who want them, would be less stressful for the children and a lot more fun to watch.

As awareness of the benefits of humour increases, most of us want to get all the laughs we can. It seems that almost every day there is another new discovery about the power of humour to help us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Every system of the body responds to laughter in some important or positive way.
2.
Many people mistakenly believe that we are born. with a sense of humour. They think that when it comes to a sense of humour,“either you've got it or you don't.” This is false! What is true, however, is that the ability to laugh and smile is actually something we are born with. For example, we laugh when we are tickled under the arm, even without thinking about how to react.
3.
The parts of the brain and central nervous system that control laughing and smiling are mature at birth in human infants, but that is not the same thing as having a sense of humour. (After all, when a baby laughs in his small bed we don't rush over and say,“That kid has a great sense of humourV”) Your sense of humour is something you can develop over a lifetime. Don't be nervous before others and try to laugh at yourself-then you will make them laugh too.

Humour includes a lot more than laughing and joke telling. Many people worry needlessly that they do not have a good sense of humour because they are not good joke tellers.More than jokes,a sense of humour requires being willing and able to see the funny side of life's situations as they happen.ln fact, one of the best definitions(定义) of a sense of humour is “the ability to see the nonserious element in a situation.”
5.
There may be a thousand different ways to express your sense of humour, but joke telling is only one of those ways.As more is discovered about how humour benefits our life, more people will be able to see and enjoy the humour when they are in a clifficult situation. Life depends on air, food and water, but it is made easier to live with a good sense of humour.
