【题干】 I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do. Over the next six years, I was treading water, just trying to earn an income. I tried journalism, but I didn't think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher. I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.
I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel. Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words.
It takes confidence to make a new start-there's a dark period in-between where you're neither one thing nor the other. You're out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you're too ashamed to say, "Well, I'm writing a novel, but I'm not quite sure if I'm going to get there." My confidence dived. Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside.
Then I met an agent(代理商) who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback. I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I Finished the second half of the novel.
The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal-that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.
It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck-of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there's no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract(合同) of the publisher-to be a published writer-is unbelievably rewarding(有回报的).

【题干】Why do British people love to say sorry
The hit movie Notting Hill(《诺丁山》)begins with a famous scene. Hugh Grant bumps into(撞到)Julia Roberts and spills orange juice all over her. After the collision(碰撞),Grant repeatedly says:" l am so sorry. l am so sorry."
His actions in this scene are very British. If Roberts' character were from Britain, she would probably apologize repeatedly as well. But this doesn't happen in the film, as Roberts is from the US.
A report in The Telegraph last week said that three-quarters of British people apologize when they bump into someone in the street-regardless of(不论) whether they are responsible or not. In fact, we Britons use" sorry" in many situations. For example, if we mishear someone, we say "Sorry " The person we are talking to will also apologize by replying:" No, I am sorry!" This can go on for up to five minutes as we compete over who is the most sorry.
Life is never as simple as "duibuqi" and" meiguanxi".
How we use "sorry" has changed. Traditionally, " sorry" was used to express deep regret, but a survey in 2007 showed that we use it to mean anything from" what" to" whatever" .
Why are Britons so sorry Mark Tyrell, a psychology writer in the UK, thinks that our apologetic tendencies(倾向 ) are rooted(来源于)in the British class system. We say sorry because historically the new middle classes in Britain had to apologize for not being working class, but also for not really being upper class. Another theory is that we apologize to avoid confrontation (对抗). For example, if you bump into someone, they might get angry. To avoid this we instantly say" Sorry ! "
True manners are about being considerate (体贴的) ,and the modem day obsession (执著) with apologizing shows that we are perhaps not as thoughtful as we once were. The word has lost some of its meaning. Do you see my point: Sorry, it might just be a British thing.
l. The author mentions a scene in the hit movie Notting Hill at the beginning to________.
A. introduce different ways of saying sorry
B. give an example of British manners
C. show what kind of men are considered gentlemen in the UK
D. draw our attention to how and when British people say sorry
2. Which of the following statements might Mark Tyrell agree with
A. Americans care less about manners than British people.
B. The fact that British people apologize so much is linked to the class system.
C. British people care too much about which social class they are from.
D. People shouldn't apologize if they are not responsible.
3. We can conclude from the article that the author thinks______.
A. it's unnecessary for British people to be so polite
B. the obsession with apologizing shows Britons are truly sincere
C. Britons should stick to the traditional use of the word "sorry"
D. the change of using "sorry" is because of language development
4. What is the main point of the article
A. To explore the best way of saying sorry.
B. Britons' overuse of “sorry" and the reason.
C. To show many British people lack traditional manners.
D. To show the way of saying sorry has changed over time.
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.C 4.B

【题干】 B
Several hundred strangers received "love letters" from a young man on the street. The letter was written and given out by Yang Yang, a student majoring in human resources at Chongqing University of Science and Technology, who hoped to show his disappointment with job hunting.
Yang's story has caught media's attention perhaps because it is similar to those of millions of recent graduates seeking jobs and struggling for survival in the country's wealthiest cities. They have diplomas, rather than professional skills, and come to big cities in hopes of better lives only to find low-paid jobs and poor living conditions.
They are China's " ant tribe (蚁族)",a term coined by sociologist Lian Si from Peking University in his 2009 book, Ant Tribe. "They're so similar to ants. They share small and narrow living areas. They're intelligent and hard-working, yet nameless and underpaid. "The term also speaks to their helplessness in a world governed by the law of the jungle-only the strongest survive.
A survey in Lian's another book published this year, Ant Tribe Ⅱ ,found nearly 30 percent of" ants" are graduates of famous universities-almost three times last year's percentage. Most had degrees in popular majors. In addition,7.2 percent of" ants" have at least a master's degree compared t0 1.6 percent in 2009.
An" ant's" average monthly salary is l,904 yuan, with about 64 percent of them earning less than 2,000 yuan, a month. Another survey in the 2010 Annual Report on the Development of Chinese Talent found more than l million "ants" live in big cities.
"Most ants are from rural families or small towns, and their experiences in universities didn't arm them well enough to fight with competitors in loig cities' employment markets," Professor Zhang Ming at Rennun University of China said.
The" ant tribe's" embarrassing living situations have become a serious social problem, and the government should develop smaller cities to attract more graduates from big cities, Zhang believed.
However," ants" expect more study and training opportunities in big cities, which keeps them positive despite their situations.
5. Yang's story is introduced in order to_________.
A. analyze graduates' difficulty of finding jobs
B. lead to the topic of the article—“ant tribe"
C. tell readers a story about those big cities
D. show a clever way of dealing with pressure
6. The" ants" fail to find high-paid jobs mainly because________.
A. they have no diplomas from good universities
B. their majors do not meet the needs of society
C. those from rural areas are not treated equally
D. they do not have necessary professional skills
7."Ant tribe" members are similar to ants in the following aspects EXCEPT that________.
A. they live in narrow and small places in groups
B. they work hard but earn little for survival
C. they are in a world governed by the law of the jungle
D. they are pleased with being nameless and underpaid
8. Professor Zhang thought "ant" problems could be solved by________.
A. creating more jobs for graduates in big cities
B. developing smaller cities to attract graduates
C. sending graduates to rural areas and small towns
D. training graduates to improve their abilities
【答案】5.B 6.D 7.D 8.B

Switzerland is the best place to be born in the world in 2013, and the US is just 16th.A new study made by the Economist Intelligence Unit( EIU) says American babies will have a dimmer(喑淡) future than those born in Hong Kong, Ireland and even Canada. The EIU, a sister company of The Economist, tried to measure how well countries will provide the best opportunities for a healthy, safe and prosperous life in years to come.
People born in Switzerland will tend to be the happiest and have the best quality of life in terms of wealth, health and trust in public institutions, according to the analysis. The Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden and Denmark also all make the top five in a "quality-of-life" index (指数) where it is best to be born next year.
One of the most important factors is being rich, but other factors come into play including crime, trust in public institutions and the health of family life. In total, the index takes into account 11 factors. These include fixed factors such as geography, others that change slowly over time such as demography (人口学) social and cultural characteristics, and the state of the world economy. The index also looks at income per head in 2030,which is roughly when children born in 2013 will reach adulthood. Small economies take up the top 10 countries, with Australia coming second and New Zealand and the Netherlands not too far behind.
Half of the top 10 countries are European, but only one, the Netherlands, is from the euro-zone. The crisis-ridden south of Europe, including Greece, Portugal and Spain, falls behind despite the advantage of a favourable climate. Interestingly, the largest European economies-Germany, France and Britain-do not do particularly well. Nigeria has the unenviable (不值得羡慕的 ) title of being the worst country for a baby to enter the world in 2013.

One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest(卑微的) to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat -disheveled. He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and I sat down to have my breakfast.
We cautiously began a conversation and spoke about a wide range of things. We never introduced ourselves. I was concerned that he might have no money and not be able to afford something to eat. So as I rose to go back to the counter and buy a second cup of coffee, I asked, "May I get you something "
"A coffee would be nice."
Then I bought him a cup of coffee. We talked more, and he accepted another cup of coffee. Finally, I rose to leave, wished him well, and headed for the exit. At the door I met one of my friends. He asked," How did you get to know Mr. Galbreath "
“Who ”
"The man sitting next to you. He is chairman of the Board of Churchill Downs."
I could hardly believe it. I was buying, offering a free breakfast, and feeling pity for one of the world's richest and most powerful men !
My few minutes with Mr. Galbreath changed my life. Now I try to treat everyone with respect, no matter who I think they are, and no matter another human being with kindness and sincerity.

As is known to us all, drinking and driving is a sort of terrible behavior that will threaten the safety of people, including the driver himself .Many of the traffic accidents caused by drinking and driving have brought about traffic jams, injuries and even death. Besides, a great deal of money has to be spent treating the injured and repairing the broken cars, which means a waste of money.
