Over many years, there has been an increase in the population of towns in many countries, as millions of people have moved from the villages in search of better jobs and facilities, in the hope of getting a higher standard of living. This development has led to huge expansion of towns both upwards into the sky and outwards into the surrounding countryside. In spite of all the efforts of movements and private businesses, many areas still suffer from a serious shortage of housing.
Now ,a new idea has been put forward that people will make use of the areas which have no other obvious commercial potential. These are small lakes, disused docks and other areas of water, many of which can be found near, or even in the suburbs of big towns.
A new style of construction has been designed which will provide a house for less than half the cost of the normal building. The main saving is, of course, the land. Because the new houses will float on water, there will be no need for foundations; instead, the house will be built on a frame made of steel which is expected to cost about ~ 5,OOO.Above this the builders will make a house with two, three or four bedrooms and all the usual modem conveniences, as well as a roof garden. Each house will be joined to the main services supplying water, gas and electricity and it will have a vacuum sewage disposal(真空污水处理) system. All the service links will have enough flexibility allowing for small differences in the water level caused by wet and dry periods of weather.
The first house to be built is expected to cost between £20,000 and £30,000 according to its size and it is already clear that there is a very good potential. market for the new system. As the cost is comparatively low, young people and common citizens would like to buy.

Global Positioning Systems are now a pact of everyday driving in many countries. These satellite-based systems provide turn-by-turn directions to help people get to where they want to go. But they can also cause a lot of problems-sending you to the wrong place or leaving you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, it is a combination of the two.
Barry Brown is with the Mobile Life Centre in Stockholm, Sweden. The centre studies human-computer interaction, or HCI, especially communications involving wireless devices. We spoke to Mr. Brown by Skype. He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a CPS-equipped car to use during his stay.
Barry Brown: “And they just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasn't until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they had put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the GPS is kind of ‘garbage in garbage’”
Mr. Brown says this is a common human error. But, he says, what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of CPS equipment. '
Barry Brown:" One problem with many GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that it's going to the wrong place."
Barry Brown formerly served as a professor at the University of California, San Diego. While there, he worked on a project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. The two men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing cameras in people's cars. They wrote a paper based on their research. It is called" The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS".
Barry Brown: "One of the things that struck us, perhaps the most important thing was that you have to know what you're doing when you use a CPS. There are these new skills that people have developed. There are these new competencies that you need to have to be able to use a GPS because they sometimes go wrong."
Barry Brown says this goes against a common belief that GPS devices are for passive drivers who lack navigational (导航) skills.
"The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS" lists several areas where GPS devices can cause confusion for drivers. These include maps that are outdated, incorrect or difficult to understand. They also include timing issues related to when GPS commands are given.
Barry Brown says to make GPS devices better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS devices work together.

Teenagers who sit down to have family meals are less likely to be depressed or take risks with drugs and alcohol, new research shows.
A new study looking at the role of family meals in the health and well-being of young people is the first study on the issue in New Zealand. It uses data collected nationally from more than 9,000 secondary school pupils. It finds that those who eat with their families frequently are less likely to report suicidal (自杀的) thoughts, less likely to be smokers and less likely to indulge in drinking, drugs and so on. It says social changes such as more television channels, more mothers working and cheap fast food have changed the status of the family meal.
However, the good news for New Zealand is that one-third of young people reported sharing meals with their families seven or more times a week and an additional 40 percent shared meals three to six times a week.
Author Jennifer Utter, a senior lecturer at Auckland University, said sitting down for dinner created an opportunity for parents to chat with their children and see how their day had been. Young people who ate with their parents reported better connectedness and better communication. Family meals indicate strong and healthy relationships. The high proportion of families eating together was encouraging, she said." A lot of families do seem to want to spend time together. It's a really positive finding."
Previously a household would have only one breadwinner and there would always be someone at home for children to talk to. Nowadays, it often took the income of two people to keep the family afloat(能维持下去) and it would be harder for parents to have dinner with their children. Chief families commissioner, Carl Davidson, said teens who ate meals with their families reported better health, and were less likely to be depressed." We probably all know that eating together is worthwhile, but this research shows that those shared meals aren't just nice to have but are actually a fundamental contributor to family well-being."

About l,500 years ago the Japanese imported many aspects of Chinese culture: the writing system, political institutions, and perhaps the most important, Buddhism. Buddhist priests were expected to eat only vegetables, and tofu, made from the soybean, was a very important kind of food in their diet. When Buddhism was introduced from China, tofu was also brought to Japan.
Tofu developed in different ways in China and Japan. While the Chinese often changed the taste of tofu by mixing it with strongly-flavored vegetables or meat, the Japanese preferred to eat it using only a simple sauce. Even now, traditional Japanese cooking preserves the original delicacy of tofu, though the way it is served may change from season to season. In summer, for example, it is simply served cold, while in winter it is often eaten as part of a hot dish.
The soybean was introduced to the West in the 18th century, but little interest was taken in it. Only scientists recognized its high food value. During the Second World War, when meat was in short supply, the US government encouraged the American people to eat soybean products. However, they never became very popular and, after the war, interest in them dropped off as the supply of meat became plentiful again.
In recent years, people in the West have become increasingly aware of the dangers of eating too much animal fat, and as a result, they have turned more and more to soybean products. This is mainly because the soybean provides almost the same food value as meat, and in addition, it is a lot more healthful. Much of the margarine (人造黄油 ) ,salad oil and cooking oil in daily use. is now produced from soybean oil. Tofu, a representative soybean product and originally one of the main foods in the diet of Chinese priests, is considered to be one of the healthiest foods available to man.
12.Tofu came to Japan together with Buddhism because_______.
A. Buddhist priests ate tofu rather than vegetables
B. it was a very important kind of food in the diet of Buddhist priests
C. the religion came to Japan together with political institutions
D. the religion was the most important aspect of Chinese culture
13. How are Japanese tofu dishes different from Chinese tofu dishes
A. They are preserved in the original taste.
B. They are served the same way throughout the year.
C. They have a better taste than Chinese tofu dishes.
D. They have a greater variety than Chinese tofu dishes.
14. The Western people become interested in tofu and other soybean products because_________.
A. they have become tired of eating meat
B. meat has become too expensive to buy
C. these products are more readily available
D. eating too much animal fat is considered unhealthy

Every boy and every girl expects their parents to give them more pocket money. Why do their parents just give them a certain amount 15
The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. 16 Some children get weekly pocket money. Others get monthly pocket money.
First of all, children are expected to make a choice between spending and saving. Then parents should make the children understand what is expected to pay for with the money. At first, some young children may spend all of the money soon after they receive it. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until it is the right time. 17
In order to encourage their children to do some housework, some parents will give pocket money if the children help around the home. Some experts think it not wise to pay the children for doing that. 18
Pocket money can give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with the money. They can spend it by giving it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. 19 Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice. Saving can also open the door to future saving and investing for children.
A. They ca. save it for future use.B. Timing is another consideration.C. As helping at home is a normal part of family life.D. Some children are not good at managing their pocket money.E. Learning how to get money is very important for every child.F. One main purpose is to let kids learn how to manage their own money.G. Where there is a will, there is a way
I first saw this sentence when I entered junior high school. The moment I came into the classroom, I saw the sentence on the blackboard.
I like the proverb because it tells a valuable philosophy of life. Achieving our goals is always not easy, but if we have a strong will, we are sure to realize them.
Once I was not very good at English. I didn't know enough English words and my grammar was also poor, which really made me upset. Fortunately, my English teacher noticed my bad situation and said to me, "Don't lose heart. Remember: Where there is a will, there is a way." Suddenly I was reminded of the sentence on the blackboard!
From then on, I decided to work hard at my English and it finally paid off. My English improved a lot and, more importantly, I gained much confidence.

One possible version:
Hi, TigerMom,
What puzzles you is actually a puzzle for many parents in China. My idea is that it is not quite right for you to do so.
Although high grades are an important factor in evaluating students and for their future university admission, development in wisdom, emotion, health, and life attitude should never be ignored. There are many examples around us. Some all-A students in school have turned out not to be as successful in society as they were expected. The reason is often that the pressure from their parents allows them almost no time for other activities. Furthermore, punishment is by no means a wise choice to help them grow up mentally and physically.
So I suggest that you take your friends' advice. More importantly, let her live like a lovely girl; let her have more friends and social activities; and let her make decisions of her own as we teenagers often do.
