But the father of America was not the father of bug. When Washington wrote that, Englishmen bad been referring to insects as bugs for more than a century , and Americans had already created lightning-bug(萤火虫) .But the English were soon to stop using the bugs in their language, leaving it to the Americans to call a bug a bug in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The American bug could also be a person, referring to someone who was crazy about a particular activity. Although fan became the usual term, sports fans used to be called racing bugs, baseball bugs, and the like.
Or the bug could be a small machine or object, for example, a bug-shaped car. The bug could also be a burglar alarm, from which comes the expression to bug, that is, "to install(安装) an alarm". Now it means a small piece of equipment that people use for listening secretly to others' conversations. Since the 1840s, to bug has long meant "to cheat", and since the 1940s it has been annoying.
We also know the bug as a flaw in a computer program or other design. That meaning dates back to the time of Thomas Edison. In 1878 he explained bugs as "little problems and difficulties" that required months of study and labor to overcome in developing a successful product. In 1889 it was recorded that Edison "had been up the two previous nights discovering' a bug' in his invented record player. '

The number of speakers of English in Shakespeare's time is estimated(估计) to have been about five million. Today it is estimated that 260 million people speak it as a native language, mainly in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the standard varieties of English found in these areas, there are a great many regional and social varieties of the language as well as various levels of usage that are employed both in its spoken and written forms.
In fact, it is impossible to estimate the number of people in the world who have acquired an adequate(足够的) working knowledge of English in addition to their own languages. The purpose of learning English and the situations in which such learning takes place are so varied that it is difficult to explain and still more difficult to judge what forms an adequate working knowledge for each situation.
The main reason for the widespread demand for English is its present-day importance as a world language. Besides serving the indefinite needs of its native speakers, English is a language in which some of important works in science, technology, and other fields are being produced, and not always used by native speakers. It is widely used for such purposes as meteorological and airport communications, international conferences, the spread of information over the radio and television networks of many nations. It is a language of wider communication for a number of developing countries, especially former British colonies. Many of these countries have multilingual populations and need a language for internal communication in such matters as government, commerce, industry, law and education as well as for international communication and for entrance to the scientific and technological developments in the West.

Young children whose mothers talk with them more frequently and in more detail about people's thoughts and feelings tend to be better at taking another person's perspective(观点) than other children of the same age.
That's what researchers from the University of Western Australia found in a new study published in the journal Child Development.
"Parents who frequently put themselves in someone else's shoes in conversations with their children make it more likely that their children will be able to do the same," said the lead author Brad Farrant.
Researchers of the UWA's Telethon Institute for Child Health Research looked at the influence of how parents interact with their children to learn more about how people develop the ability to take another's perspective.
The two-year study involved more than 120 Australian children aged between four and six, including children with typically developing language and others delayed in language acquisition(习得).
The children completed tasks which were designed to assess their language skills, ability to infer others' belief and use that to predict others' behavior, and their ability to shift flexibly between different perspectives.
Among children with typically developing language, the researchers found that mothers who talked more often and in greater
detail about people's thoughts and feelings-commenting on how another person might react to a particular situation as well as their own feelings about the topic—had children with better language skills and better perspective-taking skills.
Children with delayed language acquisition were also delayed in their development of perspective-taking skills. This displays the role played by language as children develop the ability to take another's perspective.
"Solving many challenges that the world faces today requires us all to get better at taking the perspective of other people, ' said Brad Farrant.
9.Which of the following is TRUE about the study

A. give their cbildren more chances to express themselves
B. talk more with their children about people's feelings
C. encourage their children to guess other people's thoughts
D. spend more time playing with their children
11. In the last paragraph, Brad Farrant ___________.
A. stressed the importance of perspective-taking skills
B. expressed his concern about the world's challenges.
C. showed how to take the perspective of other people
D. explained why other people's opinions are important
12. According to the text, we can learn______________.
A. parents should talk to their children frequently no matter how old their children are
B. it was Brad Farrant who wrote the study in Child Development herself

One of the main challenges many countries face is how to maintain their identity in the face of globalization and the growing multi-language trend. "One of the main reasons for economic failure in many African countries is the fact that, with a few important exceptions, mother tongue education is not practiced in any of the independent African states." said Neville Alexander, Director of the Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa at the University of Cape Town.
In response to the spread of English and the increased multi-language trends arising from immigration, many countries have introduced language laws in the last decade. In some states, the use of languages other than the national language is banned in public space such as advertising posters. One of the first such legal provisions was the "Toubon law" in France in 1994, but the idea has been copied in many countries since then. Such efforts to govern language use are often dismissed as futile by language experts, who are well aware of the difficulty in controlling fashions in speech and know from the research that language switching among bilinguals is a natural process.
It is especially difficult for native speakers of English to understand the desire to maintain the" purity" of a language by the law. Since the time of Shakespeare, English has continually absorbed foreign words into its own language. English is one of the most mixed and rapidly changing languages in the world, but there has not been a barrier to acquiring prestige and power. Another reason for the failure of many native English speakers to understand the role of the state regulation is that it has never been the Anglo-Saxon way of doing things English has never had a state-controlled authority for the language.
The need to protect national languages is, for most western Europeans, a recent phenomenon-especially the need to ensure that English does not unnecessarily take over too many fields. Public communication, education and new modes of communication promoted by technology, may be key fields to defend.
13. Neville Alexander believes that ___________.
A. mother tongue education is not practiced in all African countries
B. lack of mother tongue education can lead to economic failure
C. globalization has led to the rise of multi-language trends
D. globalization has resulted in the economic failure of Africa
14. The underlined word "futile"(in Paragraph 2) most probably means"_____________" .
A. useless B. practical
C. workable D. unnecessary
15. Why do many English-speaking countries not support the language protection effons described in the passage
A. They think language protection laws are ineffective.
B. They want their language to spread to other countries.
C. They have a long history of taking words from other languages.
D. They reduce a language's ability to acquire international importance.

I'm glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well. l'm writing to give you a hand.
First, it is important for you to take a Chinese course, and you'll be able to learn from the teacher and practice with your fellow students. Then, it should be a good idea for you to watch TV and read Chinese books, newspapers and magazines and learn to sing Chinese songs whenever possible. Besides ,it will certainly help a lot to make more Chinese friends, who will tell you a lot about China as well as help you learn Chinese.
Try to write to me in Chinese next time.

【范文】One possible version:
I prefer my English classes to be taught in English only. As we all know, a good learning environment is vital if we want to study English well. Classes taught in English only provide students with such an environment. When English is the only language used in the classroom, students will have more opportunities to practice listening and speaking. Therefore, they will be able to learn more quickly.
However, there are also some problems with this teaching method. As we haven't mastered enough English words, sometimes we may find it difficult to follow the teacher. Slow learners may even lose interest in English.
Practice makes perfect. To learn English, well requires a lot of practice.Therefore,1 like my English classes to be taught completely in English.
