On September 25, 1926, the Ford Motor Company started a five-day, 40-hour work week for its factory workers. Although Ford wasn’t the first to do this, they were one of the most important in history.
At first, this decision didn’t make many other business owners pleased. Some of the owners believed that giving the working man any time off only allowed them to spend more time on wine. They were correct in a way because drinking was a real problem at that time. But, to be honest, if you had to work 14 to 16 hour per day, 6 days per week, you might drink too much.
Ford said in his company’s newsletter: “Just as the eight-hour day opened our way to success in America, the five-day work week will open our way to a new age. “Ford understood that a five-day work week with “eight hours of work, eight hours of recreation, and eight hours rest” would encourage working people to shop on the weekends. People with more free time would need more clothing, eat more food, and it would be possible to be in the market to buy a car for travelling.
In addition, Ford also found that happy workers meant better and more efficient workers. Ford wished his workers to produce more in those shorter working hours, but with the higher pay and weekends off, it received welcome from all its workers. As Ford got better results from fewer work hours, soon factories all over the world followed Ford’s example, even today.
( ) 1.Factory workers in the Ford Motor Company began to work _________ hours altogether per week in September, 1926.
48 B. 30 C. 40 D. 38
( ) 2.Many other business owners didn’t like the idea because they thought workers would spend their free time __________.
travelling B. eating C. shopping D. drinking
( ) 3.According to Ford, a five-day work week with eight hours of work brought a lot of benefits. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the article
People exercised more often. B. People bought a car to travel.
C. People shopped more. D. People ate more.
( ) 4.The underlined word “efficient” means ________.
making fewer things in longer hours B. making as few things as before
C. making as many things as before D. making more things in shorter hours
( ) 5.The article mainly tells us _________.
how Ford stopped workers from drinking
how the five-day work week became popular
how factories followed Ford’s example
how workers spent their weekends

This meant that ____5____ I was not on time for class and had to sit in the back, I couldn't not hear the teacher at all. That was why I didn’t do well in my studies.
After leaving university, I began working as a shop assistant. As I couldn’t hear clearly, my customers often complained that I wasn't paying attention when they were ____6____. I recently watched my sister perform an act of magic.

Like a magician who makes a group of children quiet by pulling a rabbit out of a hat, my sister reached into her purse and look out two shiny Apple iPads, handing one to each child. Suddenly, the two were quiet. They sat playing games and watching videos, and we c_____2_____ with our conversation. After our meal, as we put the iPads back into their magic bag, my sister felt a bit s_____3_____.
“ I don't want to give them the iPads at the dinner table, but if it keeps them busy for an hour so we can eat in peace, and more importantly, not d_____4_____ other people in the restaurant, I often just give it to them," she told me. Then she asked: "Do you think it’s bad for them I do worry that it is making them think it's OK to use electronics at the dinner table in the future."
I did not have an answer, and a_____5_____ some people might have opinions, no one has a true scientific understanding of what the future might be for a generation raised on screens. Dr. Gary Small, director of the Longevity Center says we do know that the brain is highly sensitive to stimuli (刺激),like iPads and smartphone screen, and if people spend too much time with one technology, and less time acting together with people like parents at the dinner table, that could make it d_____6_____ to develop their communicative skills.
We really don’t know the full neurological (神经学上的)effects of these technologies yet. But learning about being alone is the basis of early development. If we don't teach our children how to be alone, maybe they 'll only know how to be lonely in the future.

“From the sound of the wheels on his board,” replied Elizabeth. “I’d know it anywhere.” Kate listened again until she heard the joyful sound hidden among all the much louder noises on the street.
John rode along the sidewalk, moving from one side to the other and back again, until he came to a stop in front of Elizabeth and Kate, “Hey Sis,” he said. “Good luck today!” “Thanks, John,” said Elizabeth. “Any words of wisdom for me ” “Yeah,” her brother replied, smiling. “Stay away from the sloppy joes in the cafeteria.” After these words, John went away on his board.
Kate wondered if Elizabeth still remembered eating the sloppy joes before she lost her sight at the age of six, because of a high fever. Kate wondered if she felt sad.
