One night, Pilar was in a deep sleep when she was woken by her cat Inti. Inti was meowing wildly outside Pilar's bedroom and throwing himself against the closed bedroom door. When Pilar opened her eyes, she saw that her bedroom was filled with smoke. As she escaped her house with Inti in her arms, she saw that a fire was burning in her kitchen. Pilar could easily have lost her life, but Inti would not let that happen. Even though Inti could have escaped the house through a cat door, he wouldn't leave Pilar.
As amazing as this story is, it is not as uncommon as you may think. Take the example of Charlotte Lee and her horse, Thunder. One summer night, the whole family was asleep with the windows open. It was normally very quiet where they lived. Suddenly, there was a loud noise. Charlotte woke up from her sweet dream, and the noise continued. Then she heard a horse running fast towards the house. The next thing she saw was Thunder standing outside her window, neighing (嘶叫) and shaking his head. She knew something was wrong. Charlotte quickly got everyone out of the house before the earthquake hit. Thunder has saved her life.
There are also stories of wild animals coming to the rescue of humans. One animal known to be a friend of humans is the dolphin. Once, Todd Endris was surfing with his friends when he was attacked by a 13 foot (4 meter) shark. In the middle of the attack, a group of dolphins came to his rescue by forming a protective ring around Endris until he could get safely to shore. Without the help of the dolphins, there is little chance that Todd could have escaped.
No one is sure why animals have so often come to our rescue. However, it is clear that humans and animals enjoy a close relationship. It is important that we care for them as much as we can.
1.Why did Inti throw himself against the door
A.He was trying to wake up his owner.
B.He wanted to get out of the room.
C.He felt bored and was playing by himself.
D.He couldn't find the way out because of smoke.
2.Before the earthquake hit, Charlotte________.
A.closed the windows
B.was sleeping deeply
C.ran to warn her neighbors
D.got her horse out of the stable
3.Both Inti and Thunder________.
A.were shy and quiet
B.used to make noise at night
C.were brave and smart
D.saved their owners several times
4.Which of the following is probably Todd's feeling towards the dolphins
A.Doubtful. B.Grateful.
C.Frightened. D. Bored.

M:I'm afraid I won't be able to make it either. I promised Jenny I'd go to a zoo to be a volunteer to look after little animals with her this Saturday. How about this Sunday

M:They just moved here. And I don't like them.
W:Aren't they easy going
M:Not in that way. They seem to be friendly whenever you see them.
W:That sounds not bad.
M:But their dogs are too noisy and they often come into my yard.
W:I think dogs are lovely.
M:But I don't like dogs. They're too scary and dangerous. Every time I want to go out, I have to look through the window to see whether a dog is there or not.
W:Have you talked to them about this
M:No, if the dog comes in, I'll call the police.
W:I think you'd better talk to your neighbors first.
(Text 3)
M:Today we are visiting Woodhill Shelter — the most unusual animal shelter in Britain. It does not house wild animals rescued from zoos or sea creatures from ocean parks. What it does have is a lot of lucky and happy cows, pigs, goats, sheep and chickens rescued from becoming your lunch by animal rights groups.
The shelter was set up by Jill and Ben Smith. Neither of them eats animal products, but lives instead on a plant based diet. They say it is a kinder and better way to live. The shelter wasn't much visited until 3 years after it was built, and now it has large numbers of followers.
All the farm workers are volunteers without pay, but get free lunch and coffee in return for their work. If you want more information about the farm, you can phone 6978325. And if you want to become a volunteer, you must visit the website and fill in the online form. Posts are not accepted because letters are easy to lose.

Every summer, the Serengeti plains (平原) of Africa are worth visiting. Millions of wild animals begin their 1,800?mile journey northwards on their annual migratory (迁移的) route.
In the month of November, polar bears in their thousands cross the Canadian Arctic, as they head towards the ice sheets of Hudson Bay. The sea ice that forms every winter is the key to the bear's managing to exist, for here they hunt for seals (海豹).
The Great Bustard, one of the heaviest flying birds, migrates each year across Europe and Asia to its wintering grounds. Unluckily, these and other migratory animals are in danger from human activity.
Since 1979, ice sheets in the Arctic have gone down by 30 percent. What does this mean for polar bears They are forced to stay on land for longer periods of time, which delays their search for food. As a result, bears today are 60 pounds lighter than what they were. Besides, smaller bears also produce weaker babies, and their chances of survival are at risk. In the plains of Africa, migratory animals like gazelles are traveling long distances for food, just to avoid falling prey (牺牲品) to humans who hunt them.
In an unusual step, experts from 120 countries have agreed to protect 31 migratory mammals, fish and birds. The United Nation's 11th annual Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) was held in Quito, Ecuador. For the first time, 900 experts attended the conference, and the enthusiastic support shows the world is united in conservation (保护) efforts.
What does getting on a protected list mean Countries that have signed the agreement will be required to pass laws locally and work with other countries that fall within the animal's migratory path. Only one animal did not make the list. The African lion was rejected (拒绝) for lack of information of the countries where it lives.
1.What can we learn from the passage
A.The Great Bustard is one of the largest flying birds.
B.The weight of polar bears today is lighter than what it was.
C.In the 1970s, ice sheets went down by 30 percent.
D.120 experts have agreed to protect 21 migratory animals.
2.Why was the African lion not included on the list from the passage
A.We don't know which countries it lives in.
B.It isn't a migratory animal.
C.Experts were not interested in this animal.
D.It was not travelling long distances for food.
3.The writer writes this passage aiming to __________.
A.let us know about the animals
B.prevent the rare animals from dying out
C.inform us of the effects of climate change
D.draw our attention to helping the migratory animals

Photographer David J. Slater was following a group of monkeys through the forest when he had a bright idea. What would happen if he left them alone with his camera
__1__ The clever monkeys hit buttons (按钮) with their long, black fingers. They smiled and showed their teeth as they looked at the camera.
The monkeys played with the camera until — snap, snap, snap! Naruto, a 6 year old with bright orange eyes, took some selfies (自拍).
Years later, a newspaper paid Slater to post the photos online. Then another website posted them — and another. Within hours, Naruto's selfies were seen everywhere. __2__
People became interested in Naruto's species, the crested black macaque (黑冠猴). These monkeys are often killed for their meat. __3__ Humans have been cutting down the trees the monkeys live in to make way for farms and roads.
Soon a group of people fighting for animal rights had an idea: Naruto took the photos. Doesn't that mean Naruto owns them — and the right to sell them
The group decided to take Slater to court (法庭). __4__ They wanted that money to be used to protect Naruto's species.
In September, the group made a deal with Slater. He will give away 25 percent of the money from Naruto's selfies. That money will be used to protect crested macaques.
Naruto didn't know what would happen when he snapped his silly selfies. __5__ The attention might just save their lives.
A.The selfies made money.
B.Slater refused their suggestion.
C.The monkey took the photograph of itself.
D.But he's lucky that he made his species famous.
E.But even those that avoid being killed are in danger.
F.You could even buy the pictures on T shirts and postcards.
G.Slater placed the camera on a stand, and then stepped back to watch.

On a day in Arkansas, some fishermen saw a bear cub (幼兽) in a tree. As hours went by, its mother didn't return. So they called wildlife biologist (生物学家) Eastridge.
The bear cub was sick and hungry, weighing only 5 pounds and with his eyes not completely open. Eastridge called Lisa Stewart, who works at Appalachian Bear Rescue in Tennessee. Stewart always makes room for a new cub.
She named the bear Miracle because she thought it was a miracle that he had survived! As soon as she could, she stopped having contact with the cub so he would not become too used to humans. When the cub arrived, Stewart cleaned his eyes and put him in a house alone. Since Miracle was already 5 months old. Stewart gave him bowls of food and another bowl of a special formula (配方奶粉), similar to a bear mother's milk. Sometimes, Miracle would reach his head out of his house and take some formula or food. But he wasn't eating too much.
Miracle was too weak to be with other bears. So Stewart gave him a toy bear named Buddy. He took it into his house and covered it with straw (稻草). He fed Buddy, too. Stewart often found the toy covered in formula and berries and its ears full of apple chunks. Now that Miracle had Buddy, he came out of his house more often and wanted to eat.
After two months, Stewart introduced Miracle to other bears so they could learn from one another. She avoided any direct contact with Miracle and the other bears. Stewart wanted to make sure they stayed afraid of humans so they could go back into the wild again. She always hid behind a fence (栅栏) and threw food over the top secretly. The bears hunted for this food as they would soon do in the wild.
Five months later, Rick Eastridge returned to pick up a healthy 90 pound Miracle and another bear from Arkansas named Rocky. Eastridge loaded the bears into boxes on his truck and transported them back to the wild. As soon as the bear boxes were opened, the two cubs ran for the woods ─ where they belonged.
1.What did Stewart do shortly after the cub arrived
A.She helped him eat food.
B.She contacted with him.
C.She settled him down.
D.She named him Miracle.
2.A toy bear was given to Miracle in order to ________.
A.remind him not to waste his food
B.kill his lonely time in his house
C.develop his skills of making friends
D.rid Miracle of its fear of humans
3.Why did Stewart always give food to Miracle in secret
A.He could learn how to find food in the wild.
B.He was too weak to be frightened by humans.
C.A good relationship could be developed.
D.She didn't want to disturb his peaceful life.
4.What is the best title for this passage
A.An Unusual Bear
B.The Growth of Miracle
C.Rescuing Miracle
D.Contacting Miracle

W:Of course, sir.
M:Do you know when the accident happened
W:Well, it was about 8:30 when I turned onto the street behind a black car. It was about 10 minutes later when I had to stop my car because of the accident.
M:Did you see what caused it
W:When I was driving my car along, I saw a black dog crossing the road in front of the black car up ahead. A white car was driving fast towards the dog from the other direction. The two cars changed direction suddenly to avoid running over the dog and crashed into each other.
M:And then
W:After that, I called the hospital immediately. About five minutes later an ambulance came.
M:OK. Thank you.

W:Everyone seems to be on a diet. Have you noticed that
M:At least everyone is talking about it. A neighbor of mine is on a banana diet. She eats one banana for breakfast, one for lunch, and two for dinner.
W:That would be bad for her teeth and her health. Has she lost any weight
M:She doesn't look any thinner. My sister eats eggs to lose weight, only eggs for breakfast, for lunch, and for dinner.
W:That's bad for her heart! Something in eggs is good for losing weight, but too many eggs are bad for the heart.
M:I've read that too. Then what about a fish diet One of my cousins eats nothing but fish, even for breakfast.
W:That's too expensive. The best way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. That's why I'm on my way to the tennis court.

He poured the dog food into a bowl and placed it in front of Spike. Spike started eating. “I'll take care of you, Spike,” he said to the dog. He knew the dog did not belong to him. Siberian Tiger is the largest feline (猫科动物) in the world and is known as the king of the forest. In the 1980s, it was listed as one of the first class national protected animals of China. To preserve this valuable species, the Siberian Tiger Park was built in 1996 in Heilongjiang Province.
The park is located on the north bank of the Songhua River to the northwest of Harbin, occupying an area of 1,440,000 square meters. It is the largest natural park for wild Siberian tigers in the world at present. There are over 500 purebred (纯种的) Siberian tigers here. What's more, visitors can also see white tigers, lions, leopards, and pumas as well as Bengali tigers.
It is a large park divided into ten areas, including the mature tiger area, the young tiger area, the walking area and the platform area for viewing the tigers.

Park employees will set the living animals free among the tigers. Visitors can see the unique live action of tigers preying on (捕食) them.

Once when I was young and had a loose tooth, I asked my father, a_dentist,_to look at it.
“It needs to be pulled,” he told me. I frowned, afraid of the pain of that experience. My dad sent me for some tissues and I imagined them soaking up liters of blood from my mouth. I closed my eyes and strengthened myself. I was still waiting for him to pull when I heard my father say, “I'm done.”
I opened my eyes and saw my tooth in his tissue covered_hand. I hadn't felt anything, and there was just a bit of blood on the tissues. I thought my father was a magician.
The next day at school I bragged to a friend about my_father's_wonderful_skill. When I explained that the process didn't hurt, my friend called me a liar. He said that when his tooth was pulled, it had hurt a lot. I talked to my father about this and there was not a single mystery left after my father's explanation: my tooth had been ready to be removed, while my friend's had not.
“I'm going to be a dentist,” I declared. I wanted to follow in the professional footsteps of my father, my uncle and grandmother. My father supported my ambition,_honoring my interest in his profession even when I was young. He always encouraged me, saying,“To_achieve_your_goal,_you should always be devoting hard_work_and_effort to it.”
I didn't need to visit my father's office as a child because I had few cavities. As I entered the elementary school and began eating more candy, however, I visited more often. I didn't mind, though. I was the only kid I knew who was excited about going to the dentist. After my father worked on my teeth, he let me hang around. And I was amazed as he operated complicated machines, leaning over patients'_mouths with a tiny mirror strapped to his head.
