In China, many people are leaving the countryside to find jobs in the cities, because the countryside is much poorer than the city, and often there isn’t much work there. Charles Chaplin was born in London on April 16th, 1889. His parents were actors. The Chaplin family was very poor, and life was difficult in London. Charles Chaplin used to do his mother’s job in the theatre when she was ill.
At the age of 17, Charlie got his first job as an actor. His job was to do funny things to make people laugh in the theatre. After seven years, he went to the USA. And over the next four years, he created his own way of art. He developed the character of a homeless gentleman and became popular.
From the 1920s to the 1950s, Chaplin made his most famous films. The film Modern Times (1936) showed his care for the modem industry workers. Many of his films were about the poor life and hard time of the working people at that time.
Charles Chaplin was British, but he lived in the USA until 1953. However, he never got US nationality. Then Chaplin, his wife and his five children had to move to Switzerland and he lived there until he died. When he was 83 years old, he won his only Oscar for the music written for the film Limelight. He was named Sir Charles Chaplin at the age of 85. Charles Chaplin died in Switzerland on December 25th, 1978.

The first photograph is of Canberra in spring. Spring lasts for three months, from September to November. I love the spring here. The trees in the street have lots of small white flowers and the weather is nice. At the beginning of spring, it’s cool and sometimes rains. At the end of spring, the weather is warm.
It is often dry and very hot in the middle of summer. Sometimes we have four or five days at 45℃! Our summer holiday starts at the beginning of December and ends at the beginning of February. I go swimming every day. We usually go to the sea for a week in January. It’s windy there and the sea is very cool.
Most people think Australia is always hot and dry. They think it never snows in Australia —— but it does in some places. We go skiing in the snowy mountains every winter in June, July or August.
