When should a child start learning to read and write This is one of the questions I am most frequently asked. There is no hard and fast rule, for no two are alike, and it would be wrong to set a time when all should start being taught to read and form sentences.
If a three - year - old wants to read (or even a two - year - old for that matter), the child has the right (权利) to be given every encouragement. The fact that he or she might later be “bored” when joining a class of non - readers at child school is the teacher's affair. It is up to the teacher to see that such a child is given more difficult reading material.
Similarly, the child who still cannot read by the time he goes to junior school at the age go seven should be given help by teachers and parents.
Although parents should be careful not to force youngsters aged two to five to learn to read (if badly done it could put them off reading for life), there is no harm in preparing them for simple recognition of letters by labeling various items in their rooms. For instance, tie a nice piece of cardboard to their bed with BED written in neat, big letter.
Should the young child ask his parents to teach him to read, and if the parents are capable
of doing so, such an attraction should not be ignored. But the task should never be made to look like a hard job and the child should never be forced to continue, or his interest should start to flag.
4. This passage is mainly about _________ .
A. what qualities people teaching children reading should have
B. different age groupings of children to be taught reading
C. when and how children should be taught reading
D. various problems of children who start learning to read
5. In the writer's opinion, children start learning to read _________ .
A. early and fast B. at different times
C. by a certain rule D. from word games
6. A three - year - old child who wants to read should _________ .
A. be encouraged B. go to an infant school
C. start from fun stories D. join a class of non - readers
7. The purpose of labeling items in the room is to _________ .
A. make it more colorful
B. teach children to write neatly
C. help children recognize simple letters
D. force children to develop the habit of reading

Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized. My mom was one of those people.
My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a young single mother. We lived a hard life, but my mom gave me a lot of love. She always spoke, “Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man. You can do anything in life if you work hard enough. ”
At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. However,
my mother told me I could walk again if I badly wanted to. Day after day, her words were so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school ---- walking on my own!
When the Great Depression hit, my mom lost job. Then I left school to support the family and determined to work for a better life.
In 1951, my life greatly changed. Once I spent holiday with my wife and kids. I was not
satisfied with the second - class hotels for families and was angry about the extra $ 2 charge(收费) for each child. I thought that was too expensive and decided to open a motel (汽车旅馆) with no extra charge.
Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk
and even designed the room style. With mother's words deeply in my soul, I never gave up. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world - Holiday Inn.
You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life
worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

11. What caused Kemmons to start a motel by himself
A. His terrible experience in the hotel. B. His poor childhood.

Girl With a Pearl Earring, or a Fake One, or None at All
Girl With a Pearl Earring is one of the most famous paingints
in the world. It was painted by Johannes Vermeer in the 1660s.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of visitors visit the Mauritshuis
Museum, just to see this painting.
Vermeer's painting shows a girl looking over her shoulder,
wearing a yellow dress, a blue turban (包头巾) and a large pearl
earring. A few of its details are worthy of special attention. For
example, the girl's eyebrows. Have you ever noticed that the girl doesn't have any eyebrows
Recent research shows that there are fine bright lines where her eyebrows are supposed to be.
However, they can't really be seen with the naked eye(肉眼).
The most famous detail of the painting is the pearl earring. In the 17th century, there were
only natural pearls. Large pearls were rare and ended up in the hands of the richest people. But the girl in the painting doesn't appear to be rich at all. Some researchers believe that the pearl in the painting was probably a fake (假的) one, perhaps made of glass. At that time, cheaper
glasses pearls were quite common. Maybe the girl was wearing a handcrafted “pearl”.
Some other researchers even believe that there is no pearl earring in the painting at all. The
so - called pearl was nothing but white paint. The artist has tricked us into imagining a pearl from the girl's ear. And if you take a closer look at the painting, you'll find that there is no visible earring hook between the girl's ear and the pearl.
Many people think Girl With a Pearl Earring is one of the most famous paintings in the world
