Dear Daniel:
I feel that I’ve grown up and should make my own decisions, but my parents disagree. My mum still helps me choose what clothes to wear.My dad asks me to pay attention only to study.I know they do this out of love, but I feel controlled. What should I do
Amanda
Dear Amanda:
Your parents sound very strict. It’s hard to believe that your mum chooses what you wear. Are you a Barbie doll
Try to take the first step when possible.Dress yourself before your mother has a chance to come in and choose your clothes. If she asks you to change, tell her you’ll be late for school.
You should also talk to her.Ask about her choices:What makes a set of clothes acceptable or unacceptable Tell her you will follow her rules, but you want to make the choices. You are not in first grade. You are a young lady in high school.
As for your father,it’s difficult to argue with his mind. After all,he is not totally wrong. How strict is he Does he lock you up with your textbooks Are you allowed to have a hobby Are you allowed to have a smartphone Are you allowed to hang out with friends
Such strict parents should know the law of diminishing returns(收益递减).A weightlifter, for example, can only lift for an hour or two each day.If she does more, her muscles will not become stronger. She will just get tired. She may even hurt herself!
Our brains also have limits. Some violin teachers say you should only practise a new skill for 15 minutes each day.Our brains need to relax and understand new information. Our brains also have a basic need to socialise.Ask your father:what is the meaning of so much studying if it makes you feel unhappy

( )27.Daniel finds it that the mother decides on Amanda’s clothes.
A.boring B.important C.unbelievable D.funny
( )28.The underlined word “muscle” means “ ” in Chinese.

( )29.The examples of the weightlifter and the violin teachers tell the parents .
A.to give the kids more praise B.to hang out with the kids
C.not to protect the kids too much D.not to push the kids so hard

Do you have a brother or sister Do you have to share a bedroom with him or her In fact, sharing a bedroom may influence your relationships.
Sharing a bedroom with your brother or sister has good sides. For one, it helps you get a good night's sleep. If you're afraid of the dark, you'll fall asleep more easily with someone else in the room. The same is true if you don't like being alone. For another, you can develop many important skills. You learn how to give and take so that nobody gets selfish(自私的). You also learn how to solve your own problems. These skills can help you create a peaceful environment and a better relationship with your brother or sister.
However, sharing a bedroom with your brother or sister has bad sides. It may influence your sleep. If you're a light sleeper, the noises he or she makes may keep you awake. The same thing happens if he or she can't sleep without a night light on. Also, when you share a room, you don't have your own space because there is always someone else here. You may feel uncomfortable when being alone. What's worse, you also cannot learn to be independent(独立的).
As you can see, there are both good and bad sides about sharing a bedroom. So, talk with your family to see which way works better for you and your brother or sister!

Last year I provided a two day home stay for a student from the UK who came to China for the first time. Early in the morning, I prepared fruit salad and dumplings with vegetables and meat filling for him. I thought it was important for me to make them correctly.
I wanted to show hospitality (好客) as well as traditional Chinese food to my guest, so I tried my best to make 30 dumplings. But do you know what happened that afternoon after my guest ate the first dumpling He told me that he was allergic (过敏的) to some of the vegetables and he was sorry to leave the rest of the dumplings on the dish untouched. As for the fresh salad, he just refused politely. What I just wasted all that time preparing food for him. This situation could have been avoided if I knew what food he liked and what he couldn't eat earlier.
I believe that helping someone warmly is the right thing to do. However, I knew that it was not done right because the result was not as good as I expected. The boy's actions were understandable. I began to understand why my parents have tried to teach me the value of doing right things, and I finally got it.
If we do something, we must pick the right thing and do it right. If not, we'll have to do it again or never get the job done at all.
