1. belly / n. 肚子;腹部
2. odd / adj. 古怪的
3. premieres / n.(戏剧、电影等)首次公演
4. coping mechanism 应对机制
When Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markel announced their engagement, everyone’s eyes were on Meghan’s diamond ring and the touching story between the couple. So it’s no surprise that a significantly smaller amount of attention has been paid to Prince Harrys own hand. But, as eagle-eyed enthusiasts have pointed out, he took an unusual pose in the photographs with his new fiancée. Many of the photos show the Prince with his hand placed over his belly. While the gesture is a bit odd, it isn’t the first time his quirk has made an appearance. Harry has taken this pose in the past as he attended movie premieres and greeted the first lady, too. What’s the meaning behind his unusual hand gesture·
According to Traci Brown, body language expert and author of Persuasion Point: Body Language and Speech Influence, this little habit may be a type of coping mechanism. “He’s covering his belly and protecting it, which just says he’s not quite comfortable in the situation,” Brown told Good Housekeeping. “Who would be with all those photographers around like myself and analyze him·” Put another way, Harry might be taking this position to comfort himself, indicating that he might feel a bit self-conscious in the spotlight. Other experts agree with Browns assessment. “Prince Harrys arm placed across his belly serves as a barrier to separate or distance himself from something that makes him uncomfortable,” Blanca Cobb, body language expert and author of Method of the Masters, told Good Housekeeping. “In this case, it could be having photos taken.”
Although Harry is often spotted making this gesture, he doesn’t even realize he’s doing it. And that’s not the only secret you might be surprised to learn about the prince. It turns out that Harry isn’t even his real name.

Body language is a part of communication, which makes up most of what we use to communicate. It plays an important role in our daily life. Here are the reasons.
Paying attention to someone’s body language can help us discern when someone is not telling us the whole truth. Here are a few signs that someone might be lying. Often a person who is not telling the truth or all of the truth will not want to make eye contact for fear the eyes are the windows to their lying souls. However, there are also other signs of lying. A person who isnt telling the whole truth may clear their throat and change their pitch as if to try and sway your attention away from their lie. Additionally, putting their hand to their face, turning away or raising their shoulders may also be indicators that they are uncomfortable with the conversation because they are not telling the truth.
Another important function of body language is to express our feelings about what we are discussing. Body language can help us determine how someone feels about what they are saying. For example, a person may tell her boss that she would be happy to take the account but her body language might indicate that she is actually not at all happy about it.
Body language may be the determining factor in a job interview. If the applicants body language conveys that he is at ease with the subject matter and conveys confidence, he has a higher probability of getting the job, especially in this tough job market.
In a friendship, one’s body language can indicate that someone is paying attention or doesn’t really care about what the other person is saying. Leaning forward into the conversation indicates that this person is interested in hearing what the other person is saying. Leaning back would indicate that he was disinterested or felt superior. Leaning forward and standing close while talking may indicate that someone is aggressively trying to persuade the other person or trying to dominate the conversation. Listening to someone while not making eye contact indicates that you are not paying attention, but are waiting for your chance to speak. This gives your friend the feeling that you don’t care about them and may cause them not to listen carefully to you when it is your turn to speak in the conversation.
Studies show that 70% of our communication is achieved nonverbally and that it is far more accurate than words. Therefore, it is important that we learn to use and discern body language more effectively to become an effective communicator.

难词探意
1. linger / v. 逗留
2. triplel/ adj. 三倍的
3. intimate / adj. 亲密的
4. confidential l/ adj. 秘密的
We all use many forms of nonverbal communication to send messages. But the implied meaning of these common signals vary greatly across different countries. In some places, they can mean the opposite of what you’re used to, or even challenge and offend. Hers a rundown of the most unusual examples across the globe.
Greetings
In New Zealand, it’s a traditional Maori hello to press nose to nose instead of using the globally familiar handshake. In various parts of India, it’s common to greet one another by touching feet. Though there are variations across the continent and different ways interpreting this, it’s generally a sign of showing respect to elders. Handshakes, hugs or even a hearty backslap is common in Western societies in places like the US and UK, but in parts of Europe such as France and Italy, the handshake is a slightly more personal greeting. It’s common to linger for longer, which some visitors may find uncomfortable.
In Italy, France and Spain, the double cheek kiss are common ways of greeting, but can often take people by surprise. If it’s your first time in the Netherlands, the Dutch prefer a triple cheek kiss. These simple signs of greeting are considered too intimate in some countries of Asia. Lips are also used as body language in many other places. For example in the Philippines and Latin American cultures, natives use their lips, rather than hands or fingers, to point.
Hand and arm gestures
Hand and arm gestures are common across the world, but, as with all body language, their use and meaning really can convey incredibly different things. Hand signals are the most commonly misinterpreted of all gestures, and can easily land you in hot water.
As standard, Italians use their arms and hands to gesture constantly while talking, whereas in Japan, this is considered impolite. Italians are also known to tap their nose to signify ‘watch out, but students at university in the UK will know that a tap of the nose means you’re discussing something private and confidential, that is ‘none of your business.
If you’re in Belgium or Northern Italy, be sure to avoid brushing your hand underneath your chin when speaking – it’s a vivid way to tell someone to go away! Did you think the thumbs up sign was a universal hand gesture for ‘great· Well hopefully you haven’t visited Greece or Sardinia yet, where its considered to be rude.
In the US, a ‘V sign (made the same way as a peace sign, but with the palm facing inwards) means victory. In the UK and Australia, however, it’s an offensive, nonverbal swear – so whether you’re planning to study in Melbourne or Manchester, take note.
Head movements
Similarly to hand gestures, head movements and facial expressions are sometimes interchangeable across the globe. In many parts of Eastern Europe, the standard nodding and shaking signifying yes. In Japan, staring or even looking for an instance too long is considered rude, invasive or even an act of aggression.

Body language is an important part of being an effective communicator. You can make a positive impression on other people when you learn to use good body language. Here are some effective tips.
Get in the right mindset
One of the easiest ways to ensure friendly body language is to go into a room with friendly intentions. “Before meeting someone, imagine that you really like the person,” said Elena Limoux. “Then when you start the meeting, try to find reasons why you sincerely like him or her. This leads to a friendly gaze, relaxed body posture, and more smiling.” When you make someone feel special, theyre more likely to go the extra mile for you in the future.
Perfect your posture
The foundation of good body language is great posture. Straighten your spine, relax your shoulders, and keep your chin parallel to the floor. You’ll also want to keep your arms in a position that doesn’t close off your chest. “Keep your body open or unblocked,” said John P. Garrison, a psychologist and body language expert. "We tend to cover our chest when we feel anxious or threatened so when it is open, were seen as more open and honest.”
Flash a smile
Everyone knows that smiling gives off positive vibes and shows people you’re open to conversation. But not just any smile will do; in fact, a disingenuous one could wind up backfiring. “Honest emotions are bilateral," said Garrison. "That means they show up on both sides of the face. So make sure if you are going to smile, that it is a full and genuine one. A smile on one side of the face is unconsciously interpreted as contempt, so a quick grin or an attempted polite one-sided smile is not a good idea."
Make eye contact
Strong eye contact is key to appearing friendly and confident. “Looking someone in the eyes is too intimidating,” body language expert Lillian Glass said. “Instead, look at the total face for one second.” Obviously, you’ll also want to avoid looking around the room or checking your phone.
Shake on it
A firm handshake makes a strong first impression. Reach out vertically and meet the other person in the middle. “Don’t attempt to dominate nor be submissive in your hand positioning," said Mark Anderson, director of training and development at Anderson Investigative Associates. “Move straight forward and with some measure of firmness. This is not the time for dead fish hands, and if your hand is sweaty, wipe it off.”
Use hand gestures
Once you’ve started your conversation, you’ll want to let your body move naturally. “Because we freeze when we feel threatened, minimal body movement can be seen as attempting to be dishonest or deceive,” said Garrison. “Research shows that people who speak with more hand gestures are believed to be more honest than those who do not use their hands when they talk.”
