Thinking about my time in France, I noticed quite a few differences between the French and the English.
The first example is about the French language. In French, there are two ways to say ‘you’: ‘tu’ is the informal (不正规的) form, while ‘vous’ is the formal form. When I learnt French, I was taught to call everyone ‘vous’ unless ( 除 非 ) they were my family or a friend. So I was surprised that everyone in France used the informal ‘tu’ all the time. School children used ‘tu’ with their teachers as well as the head teacher. Even strangers I met in the street would call me ‘tu’, and sometimes ‘tu’ was written on street signs. But I continued to use ‘vous’ because I didn’t want people to think I was being impolite. To be honest, I’m thankful that in English we don’t have to worry about these things!
As you might know, school children in the UK traditionally wear school uniforms but in France pupils do not wear uniforms. It was a culture shock for me to see children wearing Spiderman T-shirts and baggy blue jeans while in the classroom. The final difference was the relaxed attitude at school. Teachers were never in a hurry, and the children and teachers were given long rests and much time to eat their lunch. While in the UK, school day might seem highly pressured (有压力的).
The UK and France are only separated by a small channel of the sea, but there are many differences between the two cultures! Anyway, I cannot deny (否认) what a great chance it was to live and work in another country.
( )1. Which of the following is NOT a culture shock to the writer
A. It takes French students much time to eat lunch.
B. French students use ‘tu’ with their head teacher.
C. Students in France wear different clothes at school.
D. Teachers and students in the UK seem highly pressured.
( )2. What might the writer say to his friends when he goes back to the UK
A. It’s very fantastic to stay in France. B. People in France are more polite than us.
C. The French culture is just the same as ours. D. It’s more difficult to learn French in France.
( )3. What is the best title of the passage
A. Life in France B. Troubles in France
C. Cultural Differences D. Different Languages

One morning, I was driving my father-in-law to the airport when a plane flew silently over the road like a big bird, about to touch down at the airport.
"It's magic," my father-in-law said. I looked at him, without knowing what was happening.
He was a doctor who gave speeches at colleges and had visited
more than 100 countries. He understood better than I why a plane can fly in the sky. It, really, wasn't magic.
But now, I realize he was at least right in some way.
Though flying might not be magic, it's certainly magical. What it brings to our lives is something found in our dreams.
But too often, we, especially I forget. I read a sentence a few months ago. It said, "You know you're growing-up when you no longer want a window seat."
Too often in recent years, I've asked for a seat near the exit row, forgetting the wonders of traveling fast. But sometimes, when the Wi-Fi's not working or my computer has no power, I remember to look.
I think of one time when I was leaving on a family vacation. Moments after take-off, I started working. But a passenger behind me wouldn't stop talking. "The clouds!" he kept saying, "Look at the clouds!"
I turned around, and saw two men, one who appeared to be in his seventies and the other much younger. The chat continued for 20 minutes until, not patiently, I raised my eyes from my computer screen and looked out of the window.
The clouds!
He was right. We were floating through big soft balls of cotton, each in different shapes. They seemed close enough to touch. The afternoon sun provided all kinds of colors, all against a blue sky. I put away my computer and appreciated(欣赏)them for the rest of the flight.
I don't remember the work I felt like I had to complete that afternoon. taut I've never forgotten those clouds.
( )1. The writer thinks flying is "magical" because .
A. planes fly like a very big bird
B. it has changed human lives in some ways
C. he thinks planes have magic powers
D. he understands well why a plane can fly in the sky
( )2. What is the meaning of the underlined sentence in the 6th paragraph
A. Where people grow up, their minds slow down.
B. When people grow up, they do not like changes.
C. Adults often care too much about day-to-day work.
D. Adults often feel stressed and tired after a day's work.
( )3. How did the writer feel when he listened to the chat for 20 minutes
A. Unhappy. B. Excited. C. Interested. D. Nervous.
( )4. The writer wrote this article to .
A. explain to the readers how planes fly in the air
B. tell us to look up at planes from time to time
C. remind the readers to enjoy the beauty around them
D. show views from planes are better than that on the ground
( )5. Which of the following is probably the best title for the passage
A. Is it a wonder B. Is it magic
C. What soft clouds! D. What a strange flight!

Dear Mr. Chen,
I would like to recommend Wilson for the "Star of 2015" in our school.
Wilson is clever. He works hard at school and does well in all his lessons. He can use computers well. When he is free, he often helps at the Helping Hands Club and does most of the computer work for the club.
Wilson is kind and helpful. He plans everything carefully. He is a volunteer in the community, and often takes part in activities to help his neighbours.
Last Sunday, he visited an old people's home. He helped clean their flats and did some shopping for them.
We all think Wilson should get the award. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Wu Ring
