When Justin Tong was a child, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him doing lots of housework such as carrying out the rubbish and sending newspapers. But when he grew up, be was better off than his childhood friends and lived a happier and healthier life.
These are the finding of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 children to London. It sowed that the children who had worked hard in childhood had a richer and a happier future. “Children who worked in the home or community gained competence(能力)and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society.” said Daniel Brown, the psychologist(心理学家)who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.
Brown’s study followed these children in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Brown, the researchers compared the children’s mental-health scores with their childhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for pat-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings(基础)of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”

I often went fishing during the summer. Personally I am very fond of strawberries, but I have found that strangely, fish prefer worms. So when I went fishing, I didn’t put strawberries on the hook. Instead. I put a worm in front of the fish and said: “Wouldn’t you like some ”
Why not use the same common sense when fishing for people
Why talk about what we want That’s childish. Of course you’re interested in what you want. You always are. But no one else is. The rest of us are just like you; we are interested in what we want.
So the only way on earth to influence people is ___▲___.
Remember that tomorrow when you are trying to get somebody to do something. If, for example, you don’t want your children to smoke, don't lecture at them. Don’t talk about what you want, but show them that cigarettes may keep them from joining the basketball team or winning the hundred-metre race.
Once I rented a ballroom of a New York hotel for a series of my lectures which would last for 20 nights. I was a regular customer of this hotel and had held quite a few lectures there. But just before that year’s lectures were about to begin, I was suddenly informed that I should have to pay almost three times as much rent as usual. I was shocked and didn’t want to pay the increase, but what's the use of talking to the hotel about what I want
Two days later, I sent the hotel manager a letter. In the letter, I drew two columns(栏), one for “Advantages” and the other for “Disadvantages”. Under the “Advantages” column, I wrote: “You have your ballroom free to rent for dances and meetings. That’s big business. From things like that you will make more money than if I tie your ballroom up for 20 nights during this season.
Under the “Disadvantages” column, I wrote: “First, instead of getting more money from me, I’m afraid you will earn nothing this time, because I can’t afford the rent you’re asking and I’m planning to hold my lectures it some other place. Second, as you know, my lectures attract groups of educated and cultured people to your hotel. For 20 nights! That’s good advertising for you, isn’t it. Of course you can pay $5000 advertising in the newspaper, but you’ll never bring as many people to look around in your hotel as I can by my lectures. That is worth a lot to you, right ”
And guess what, in the end, my rent increased only 50 percent, rather than 300 percent.

In April 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first min to travel In space. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon. Some people believe the next step is for humans to visit Mars. There’s no doubt that the first person to walk on Mars will become as famous as Gagarin or Armstrong, and many astronauts would love the opportunity. But what is space travel really like for the astronauts
Many astronauts suffer physical problems, oven if they are in space for just a few months. Some of these problems are short-lived; others may be long-lasting. More than two-thirds of all astronauts suffer from motion sickness while traveling in space. In space, the body cannot tell up from down. The body sands confusing signals to the brain, which can result in feeling sick for a few days. The amount of blood and water in the body also ends up being sent differently. More blood and water end up in the face, neck and chest, resulting in a puffy(肿胀的)face and an enlarged heart.
For the duration of their tusk, astronauts experience conditions that influence their health. For example, their bones get weaker. Being in a weightless environment means that astronauts do not use the muscles(肌肉), so their muscles gradually get weaker. This, along with the change of blood to the upper body and the resulting loss of important minerals(矿物质), causes bones to weaken. As a result, many astronauts are unable to walk property for a few days upon their return to Earth. In addition, they are exposed to radiation(辐射)from the sun, This puts them at a higher risk of serious illness.
In addition to physical difficulties, astronauts who travel for long periods may also suffer from psychological stress. Long journeys require astronauts to spend more time inside a spaceship. For example, a round-trip journey to Mars could take about three years. Being confined in a small space for such a long period of time is not healthy.
Astronauts — especially those who achieved important “firsts” such as Gagarin and Armstrong — are often seen as exciting adventurers. This may be right, but it’s also worth remembering the efforts they make to explore our universe.
37. According to Paragraph 2, what physical problems do astronauts suffer
A. Their hearts send weakened signals to their bodies.
B. They may feel sick because of confusing signals.
C. They may live shorter after travelling in space.
D. Their brains often get less blood and water.
38. What can cause astronauts’ bones to weaken
A. Less proper walks upon their return to Earth.
B. More radiation from the sun hurting the bones.
C. Weaker muscles and loss of important minerals,
D. Puffy faces, necks and enlarged hearts and brains.
39. The underlined word “confined” in Paragraph 4 probably means “______”.
A. kept B. Trained C. allowed. D. served
40. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A. To encourage people to be the first ones to visit Mars.
B. To question whether humans are able to go to Mars soon.
C. To discuss what is the best health care for astronauts in space.
D. To remind us of the price astronauts pay for exploring universe.
