The spider probably came to Britain in a box of bananas.
After the incident, Mr Stevens took a photo of the twelve-centimetre spider with his mobile
phone, but then went home, despite his hand swelling “like a balloon”. At home, he collapsed with
breathing difficulties and had to be rushed to hospital. Fortunately, he was able to find the picture
on his phone. The photo was sent to a university, where they identified the species of spider and
found a cure for the poison.
