Do you know when and where ice cream got its start? It’s an international favorite with a long and interesting history.
The earliest ices were eaten in China many years ago. The people would put orange juice on ice. Later, this idea traveled to Italy. Nero, the emperor of Rome between 37 and 68 A.D., liked to eat ices between violin lessons. He ordered runners to run to the mountains, get snow and quickly run back to the palace. The snow was mixed (混合的)with fruit juices and nuts.
Around 1660, coffee shops serving ice cream were very popular in Paris. Most of the coffee shops were owned by Italians. The first successful one was opened by a man from Sicily named Francesco Procopio.
Ice cream was probably brought to America in the early 1700s, and it quickly became the favorite of American presidents. George Washington had ice cream pots and machines in his kitchen. Doly Madison, the wife of President Madision, was the first person to actually serve it in the White House. She made her guests very happy when she served her favorite dessert (甜点).
Before ice cream was sold in stores, it was made and frozen at home. It took a lot of work to mix cream, eggs, fruit, ice, and salt, and then to freeze it. Nancy Johnson, an American woman who was good with machines, invented the hand-turned ice cream freezer in 1846. Five years later, Jacob Flusell opened the first ice cream business, in Baltimore, Maryland. His business quickly spread to other states.

July 21st, 2007 was a typical English summer’s day – it rained for 24 hours! As usual, I rushed home from work at midday to check on the house. Nothing was amiss. By the time I left work at 5 pm, however, the road into our village was flooded (淹没的). Our house had never been flooded but, as I opened the front door, a wave of water greeted me. Thank God the kids weren’t with me, because the house was 5 feet deep in water. We lost everything downstairs. And the plaster had to be torn off the walls, ceilings pulled down.
At first we tried to push on through. We didn’t want to move the children out of home. So we camped upstairs. We put a sheet of plastic across the floor to protect us from being wet. But after three months, we felt very sick, so we moved to a wooden house in a park. The house was small, but at first we were all just happy to be in a new place. Unluckily, things took longer than expected. What surprised me most was how much I missed being part of a community (社区). We had lived in a friendly village with good neighbours, and I’d never thought how much I’d miss that. Although our situation was very bad, it’s difficult to feel too sorry for yourself when you look at what’s happening elsewhere.
We moved back home in August. With December coming, there’s reconstruction(重建)work to be done, so it’s difficult to prepare for Christmas. But I can’t wait- I’m going to throw a party for our friends in the village to say thanks for their support. This year, I won’t need any gifts-living away from home for months has made me realize how little we actually need or miss all the things we have. Although we are replacing things, there’s really no rush-we have our home back, and that’s the main thing.
[ ]53 What does the underlined word “amiss” in Paragraph I mean?
A. Wrong. B. Missing. C. Right. D. Normal.
[ ]54. We can learn from the passage that the family _____.
A. was sick of staying downstairs

[ ]55. What does the writer mainly want to express by telling her story?
A. She valued human feelings more than before.
B. She realized she almost didn’t need anything.
C. She found Christmas gifts could be replaced easily.
D. She thought her own home was the most important.
D
Next time a customer comes to your office, offer him a cup of coffee. And when you’re doing your holiday shopping online, make sure you’re holding a large glass of iced tea. The physical sensation(感觉)of warmth encourages emotional warmth. While a cold drink in hand prevents you from making unwise deeisions – those are the practical lesson being drawn from recent research by psychologist John A. Bargh.
Psychologists (心理学家)have known that one person’s feelings of another’s “warmth”is a powerful factor in social relationships. Judging someone to be either “warm” or “cold” is an important thing needed to be thought about carefully. Even there are studies showing that a “cold” person may be more skillful. Much of this is deep into very early childhood experiences. Bargh argues, when babies’ sense of the world around them is shaped by physical sensations, especially warmth and coldness. Classic studies by Harry Harlow, published in 1958, showed monkeys preferred to stay close to a cloth “ mother ” rather than one made of wire, even when the wire “mother” carried a food bottle. Harlow’s work and later studies have led psychologists to give strength to the need for warm physical touch from caregivers to help young children grow into healthy adults with normal social skills.
Feelings of “ warmth ” and “coldness” in social judgments appear to be universal. Although no worldwide study has been done, Bargh says that describing people as “warm” or “cold” is common to many cultures, and studies have found those sensations influence judgment in many countries.
To test the relationship between physical and psychological warmth, Bargh did an experiment in which 41 college students took part in. A research assistant handed the students either a hot cup of coffee, or a cold drink, to hold while the researcher filled out a short information form: The drink was then handed back. After that. The students were asked to rate (评估)the personality of “Person A” based on the description. Those who had just held the warm drink thought Person A as warmer than those who had held the iced drink.

D. the things he has bought online

Societies(社会)all over the world name places in similar ways. It often happens that a place has two names: One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits died hard. and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.
Many roads and places in Singapore (新加坡)are named in order that the pioneers(先驱)will be remembered by young people today. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Palace. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries- in both the West and the East.
Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to develop friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were first from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in old British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus- clearly named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel.
Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example. “Base Basah” means “wet rice ” in Malay. Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet Rice Road”? The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road.
A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is “Circular Road”for one. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like “Paya Lebar Cresent”. This road is called a crescent (月牙)because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.
64. Do societies name places in similar ways or quite different ways?
65. How can a place get its two names often?
66. Why do people name the place as Stamford Road?
67. What’s the reason for the road named as “Wet Rice Road”?
68. In what ways do Singaporeans name their places?

Well, good evening everyone. I’m Lucy. I’m here to talk to you about my painting. It was just a hobby but it’s really more than that now. I work four days a week instead of five now, which means I can spend Friday, Saturday and Sunday on my painting.
I first became interested in art when I was at primary school. Then at secondary school we had art classes twice a week, and I learned how to use chalk and different kinds of paint: water colors, oils and so on.
Those classes were really useful for me, and ever since then I’ve had lessons of some kind. I’ve attended evening classes and been on what they call painting “holidays”, where you go out into the countryside and paint during the day and then sit and discuss your work with a teacher and the other artists after dinner. I’ve also enjoyed painting in lots of different countries. I’ve been to Australia and painted the beautiful sunrises. I’ve also painted pictures of the local people working in the fields in France and Spain. Of all, my favorite place is still China. I love walking in the southern mountains of the country.
I’d love to go to art college full-time for three years, but I’ve got all the money on my flat and I’ve a car to run….

Thank you all for coming. I’m going to give you the final details of our camping trip next week.
The bus will meet you at 7:30 on Monday morning outside the school and we will set off at 7:45 so don’t be late. There’ll be room on the bus for one bag each so please don’t bring more than one bag or suitcase. You don’t need to bring tents or food as that’s all provided for us, but you will need to bring a sleeping bag. It turns cold at night so bring some warm clothes too. If we’re lucky though, the sun will shine and we’ll be able to use the outdoor pool on the site so don’t forget your swimming things.
On to pocket money – please don’t bring too much. £5 one day should be enough. But you will probably want to bring some extra money for the last day when you are free. The campsite is in the middle of the countryside so when you are free, you may want to go shopping in the nearest town about eight miles away. That’s Southport. There’s plenty to do there and there’s a bus that stops outside the Post Office in the village down the road. I’ll point it out to you when we get there.
That’s all. Any questions?
