Sometimes, what you use to eat with may cause trouble in another country.
Luc Cagadoc, 7, is in Grade 2 in a school in Montreal (蒙特利尔), Canada. While having lunch one day last month, Cagadoc was punished by his teacher. According to Cagadoc, it was because he “ate with a spoon and fork, instead of a knife and fork, like most Canadians”.Cagadoc was made to eat alone.
Cagadoc and his family moved to Canada from the Philippines (菲律宾) in 1999. His mother says it is normal for people there to eat with a fork and spoon. She talked to the school principal. But the principal said the punishment was right because Cagadoc was “eating like a pig”.
Soon, many Filipinos in Canada heard about this story through e-mails. They were angry. “We consider this to be a big insult (侮辱) to the Filipino culture,” said Gilbert Asuque, an official from the Filipino Embassy (大使馆) in Ottawa.
In Manila, some Filipinos showed their anger in front of the Canadian Embassy. They held up cards that read, “Respect cultural diversity (尊重文化的多样性)” and “We eat with spoons and are proud of it”.
But the school says that it punished Cagadoc because of the way he ate, not what he used to eat with. The punishment was “in no way aimed at the cultural practices of (Filipino) people”.
Earlier this month, Canadian Ambassador (大使) to the Philippines Peter Sutherland said that the case was unusual and doesn’t happen often.
Filipinos make up the third largest group of immigrants (移民) in Canada, after people from China and India. About 400,000 Filipino- Canadians live in the country.

Life in Korea is not too difficult, but you should know some customs before you leave in order to make your life easier. In Korea, you are supposed to bow when you meet someone. The table manners there are a bit different from that in China. You are not supposed to make noise while eating or to pick up your bowl. You should put your rice bowl on your left and put your soup bowl on you right. If you are invited to a Korean house, you’d better take off your shoes, so it is rude if you don’t wear your socks. By the way, if you are invited to a dinner party, remember to bring a small gift.

Good manners
As a student, we should do our best to do things with good manners.
In a word, if we follow all the rules, our city will be more beautiful.
When some people are waiting for a bus, instead of waiting in line, they jump the queue and crowd into the bus. Some people spit in public, which makes the city dirty.
I think everyone should know what to do and what not to do in public. For example, we are supposed to be friendly to others and offer help to a person in trouble. When we are on a bus, we should give our seat to the old. It’s our duty to follow the traffic rules and not to litter around. Besides, don’t forget to keep low voice in public places.
In a word, if we follow all the rules, our city will be more beautiful.
except, except for / that, besides都有"除……之外"的意思,但用法各异,现就它们的用法进行分析比较:
一、except的用法--"排除式"
except意为"只有……除外;除去……",后跟名词或代词作宾语,强调从整体中除去部分,即except后的部分不包括在整体之内。因此,常和all, everything, no one, nothing等词一起使用。
1. All of them went out for a walk ________ John.
A. besides B. except C. beside D. excepts
2. Everyone is here ________ Xiao Wang and me.
A. except B. besides C. beside D. excepts
析:Key:1. B 2. A。
二、except for/that的用法--"排除否定式"
(1)except for...
1. It was dark in the city ________ a few weak lights.
A. except for B. except C. besides D. but for
2. Your composition is very good ________ a few spelling mistakes.
A. except that B. except for C. besides D. beside
析:Key: 1. A 2. B。
(2)except that...
1. The suit fitted him well ________ the color was a little brighter.
A. except for B. except that C. except when D. besides`
析:Key: B。本题题意为"除色彩艳了一点儿外,这套衣服很适合他",从句the color was a little brighter句意和结构完整,只需用引导词that,故选except that。
2. -Can you tell me all about the earthquake
-Sorry, I know nothing about it ________ I read in the newspaper.
A. except B. except for C. except what D. except that
3. Mr Green usually goes to work by bus ________ it rains.
A. besides B. except when C. except what D. beside
(3)except for与except that有时可互相转换。例如:
1. Your composition is very good except for a few spelling mistakes.
=Your composition is very good except that there are a few spelling mistakes.
2. The village is very quiet except for some birds singing in the woods.
因此,常和all, everything, no one, nothing等词一起使用。
1. All of them went out for a walk except John.2. Everyone is here except Xiao Wang and me.
A. except B. besides C. beside D. excepts
二、except for/that的用法--"排除否定式"
(1)except for...
1. It was dark in the city except for a few weak lights.
