Homesickness at University
James Mahoney, 19, has just started university in Glasgow. Every day he returns to his flat after school, his mind begins to race with thoughts of his native Northern Ireland. “I was trying to sleep, but I kept thinking about my best friend and my family,” he says. “I also started to think about past Christmas get-togethers.”
Pressure for first-year students to meet new people can add to the feelings of isolation. “You watch everybody come together into new groups of friends and might feel you don’t fit in,” says Katie Pruszynski, who works in research support at the University of Sheffield.
International students, in particular, may also struggle. Stella Matsouka, 20, who is from Greece and is studying at the University of Essex, says homesickness makes her feel anxious. She also misses Greek culture. “I was surprised by how polite people are here,” she says. “Sometimes, I wish I could just swear (咒骂) at someone at the traffic lights.”
But if you are feeling homesick, there are solutions. Pearman says one of the first things to do is
to talk to people. “It could be student support, friends or family,” he suggests. “Anywhere you can exchange stories and coping strategies.” It’s easy to imagine you’re the only person struggling. Cooksley says that when she found the courage to tell her housemates about her homesickness, she realized they all felt the same.
Pearman also recommends people make the new flat their own by bringing “photos from home, a particular poster, favorite pillows or a bed set.” “Look after yourself and do things you enjoy, like reading, exercise and sleep well,” he adds. “It may also be good to put off going home for a short time while you settle in.” And when Matsouka gets homesick, she reminds herself why she is away from home in the first place.
Judging from James Mahoney’s words, we can know that homesickness tends to hit him .
A. when he wakes up in the morning B. at Christmas
C. when he walks on the street D. at night
According to Katie Pruszynski, first-year students are more likely to feel homesick because
.
most of them have never lived independently before
they have to bear unimaginable academic pressure
most of them find it hard to be financially independent
they have to meet new people and make new friends
Which of the following statements can we infer from Stella Matsouka’s words
① She has learned how to cope with homesickness.
② She is hesitating over whether to tell her housemates that she feels homesick.
③ People in Essex are more polite than those in Greece.
④ She has decided to drop out and fly back to Greece.
A. ①② B. ③④ C. ①③ D. ②④
Which of the following is not a piece of advice that Lawrence Pearman gives to students who feel homesick
Go out and socialize with people.
Avoid going home before you feel settled in at university.
Remind yourself of your purpose in coming to the university.
Bring some of your favourite things and put them in the new flat.

Not getting the sleep you need Is your pillow the problem
How well did you sleep last night
Did you toss and turn (辗转反侧)all night Did you wake up with a sore neck or a headache Do you feel like you need a nap even though you have slept for eight hours Just like you, I would wake up in the morning with all of those problems and I couldn’t find out why. Like many people who have trouble getting a good night’s sleep, my lack of sleep was affecting the quality of my life. I wanted to do something about my sleep problems, but nothing that I tried worked.
The pillow was the problem
I bought every pillow on the market that promised to give me a better night’s sleep. None of them worked. Finally, I decided to invent one myself. I asked everyone I knew what qualities they
would like to see in their “perfect pillow” and got many responses: I’d like a pillow that never goes flat,” “I’d like my pillow to stay cool” and “I’d like a pillow that adjusts to me regardless of my sleep position.” I spent the next two years of my life inventing MyPillow.
MyPillow to the rescue
Flash forward ten years and MyPillow, Mike Lindell’s revolutionary pillow design, has helped five million people improve the quality of their sleep. Lindell has been featured on numerous talk shows, including Fox Business News and Imus in the Morning. Lindell and MyPillow have also appeared in feature stories in The New York Times. MyPillow has been selected as the Official Pillow of the U.S. National Sleep Foundation.
