Book review by Jarrad
On the weekend I read a totally amazing book called The Adventures(历险记) of Siegfried and Hannah. It was such a cool book because it was full of magical journeys to many mysterious lands. You never knew where the characters were going to end up next.
The main characters are a boy called Siegfried and his little sister Hannah. They are always ready for a mysterious adventure every time they step out their door. The book contains twelve separate stories.
I won’t spoil it for you, but what I loved the most was that the main characters were just like real kids. They were the sort of kids that I’d want to be friends with.
I would really recommend(推荐) that you read this book, especially if you like fairies, dragons, magic, adventures and surprises. It is the best book that I have read all year. There was nothing I did not like about this book, except that it should have been longer!

Have you ever read a book called Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption (《丽塔·海华丝和肖申克的救赎》) It tells a story that is both shocking and full of hope. The book is written by Stephen King, in full Stephen Edwin King, an American writer. Stephen King is the writer of more than fifty books, and all of them are worldwide best-sellers.
Set in 1947, it tells the story of Andy Dufresne, a banker who is put into prison. He is accused of(被指控) killing two people, although he didn’t do it. After years of suffering in the prison, he starts to make friends with others and wins their respect with his outstanding abilities.
But Andy never stops wanting freedom. During his 20 years in prison, he has been digging a hole with a small pickaxe(镐头) every day and hiding the hole with a poster. As his well-prepared escape plan is put into practice, the suspense(悬念) in the book keeps readers on edge until the end.
Famous Irish writer Oscar Wilde once said, “We’re all in the gutter(臭水沟), but some of us are looking at the stars.” This saying perfectly sums up Andy’s life. The thing that made the biggest impression on readers is Andy’s love of the beauty of life. He plays a song over the prison’s broadcast system, even though he is not allowed to do so. When the singer’s voice is heard, the prisoners stop talking, put themselves deep in the music and let the beauty flood in.
The book is about good people who refuse to let really bad things become their way of life. The goal of this book is to show readers the power of strength, hope and patience.

Every student should read one of the plays by William Shakespeare. It will be a chance to read some of the most amazing poetry(诗歌). But it will be hard. Shakespeare didn’t use language like us.
William Shakespeare lived in the time of Queen Elizabeth Ⅰ. The language at that time is known as Elizabethan English. Why is it so difficult to understand the plays of William Shakespeare
One problem is the meaning of the words. Though about 95% of Shakespeare’s words are still used in English today, a few of them now have different meanings, for example, the word “weird”. To us, it means strange. In Shakespeare’s day, it meant being able to see the future. Another example is “quick”. It now means fast, but 400 years ago it meant alive.
While word meanings may be one problem, Shakespeare’s order of words is another problem. Words are usually put together in a certain order in English. For example, we usually say, “John caught the ball.” But Shakespeare was a poet(诗人), and he did not have to keep language rules. He would sometimes use the form, “John the ball caught.” He did this to make the beats and sounds of each line of his poems come out a certain way. But any high school student can easily understand Shakespeare’s creative word order. The problem, it seems, must be something else.
The biggest problem, perhaps, is understanding Shakespeare himself. He was, after all, a poet. Even great modern poets write things that readers might have trouble understanding.
Students will always have trouble understanding the language of Shakespeare. But if they don’t give up, they will enjoy the greatest works written by the greatest of poets.
( )38. According to the passage, which of the following is an opinion
A. The word “quick” means fast today while it meant alive 400 years ago.
B. It’s difficult for the readers to understand the great modern poets’ works.
C. Shakespeare used different orders of words to make the lines sound natural.
D. Nearly 95% of Shakespeare’s words are used today but some have different meanings.
( )39. Which of the following shows how the paragraphs are organized in this
passage
A. B.
C. D.
( )40. The writer’s purpose of writing this passage is to .
A. introduce the words that Shakespeare used in his plays
B. show the word order of a sentence in the time of Elizabeth Ⅰ
C. express people’s love for Shakespeare as a great poet in history
D. explain why it is difficult for students to read Shakespeare’s plays
( )41. This passage can probably be read in the part of a magazine.
A. Travel B. Culture

Marianne Carus, who started Cricket(《蟋蟀》) magazine in 1973 and served as Editor-in-Chief(总主编) until 2012, died on March 3 at the age of 92 this year.
Marianne believed that “only the best of the best is good enough for the young.” In Cricket, children would find wonderful stories with beautiful art, and be encouraged by ideas in the humanities and sciences. Marianne looked for stories from around the world to awaken admiration for different peoples and cultures. Most important, Cricket would never talk down to children.
Marianne knew that children were filled with fun, and she wanted Cricket to be, too —“humour from the heart that makes you laugh out loud. ” And so, she named her literary magazines after a funny group of bugs(虫子) , such as Ladybug and Spider.
Over the years. Cricket has been read by millions of children and given many writers and artists their start. Marianne kept a special box of “love letters” to the magazine. She treasured these letters from Cricket readers, including long-ago readers. They told her that their interest in reading had begun with Cricket.
▲ She considered other names, such as Troubadour or Taliesin, the singers and storytellers of old who traveled from one place to another to share their songs and stories. Then one night, she was reading Isaac Bashevis Singer’s memoir(回忆录) A Day of Pleasure about his childhood in Warsaw. In it he wrote: “There was a stove in Shosha’s apartment behind which there lived a cricket. It chirped the nights through all winter long. I imagined the cricket was telling a story that would never end.” That’s exactly what Marianne wanted her children’s magazine to do—to tell stories that would never end! So the name Cricket became her best choice.
Thank you for everything, Marianne. May the stories, and the laughter, never end!
