Giving gifts is a common thing for human beings. But the world is so big that the customs of gift giving are varied in every country. Let’s take a look at the unique tradition around the world.
In the US, a set of kitchen knives seems like a perfect gift idea for a wedding or a holiday. However, in some European countries like Germany, superstition(迷信) says that a knife presented as a gift will cut off your friendship. There’s a well-known Italian wedding tradition where the groom’s tie is cut into a number of little pieces. Wedding guests can then “buy” these tie slices in exchange for cash. It’s a fun way to give money to the bride (新娘) and groom as well as leaving guests a wedding souvenir.
Vodka(伏特加酒) might seem the most suitable gift for a Russian, but a lot of them would see this wine as an unexpected gift. Many even think the idea is silly. Contrary(相反的) to the way American Jews exchange gifts during Hanukkah, those from or living in Israel usually won’t receive gifts from one another.

Liang runs a small coffee shop with a friend in Chongqing. To prepare for the match, Liang had trained for two months. Sometimes he made more than 300 cups a day. He said, “ ▲ ”. The hard work provided him with smooth movement during the competition without too much thinking.
“The most important thing for doing latte art is passion and perseverance,” Liang said. “We need an eye for the subtle beauty in life.” Liang even made a pattern of a doctor to express thanks to the doctors and nurses who tried their best to save patients during the period of COVID-19 epidemic.
Managed and produced by World Coffee Events, the World Latte Art Championship is the top level competition in the coffee industry. No Chinese person has yet won the title. “I wish to introduce our Chinese coffee culture to the world,” Liang said.

It was a rainy day, and I didn’t want to drive up the mountain road to my daughter Carolyn’s house. But she insisted that I come to see something at the top of the mountain. So here I was, unwillingly making the two-hour journey through fog—the thick clouds. By the time I saw how thick it was near the top of the mountain, I’d gone too far to turn back. Nothing could be worth this, I thought.
“I’ll stay for lunch, but I am going to head back as soon as the fog lifts,” I announced when I arrived.
“But I need you to drive me to the garage to pick up my car,” Carolyn said. “Could we at least do that, Mum ”
I agreed. After ten minutes on the mountain road, we turned a corner and stopped. There were many tulips (郁金香) on the top of the mountain, for several acres. A series of questions filled my mind. Who created such beauty Why How
As we were nearer, we saw a sign that read: “Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking.” The first answer was: “One Woman—Two Hands, Two Feet, and Very Little Brain.” The second was: “One at a Time.” The third was: “Started in 1958.”
I was so moved by what we had seen. “She changed the world,” I finally said. “One bulb(鳞茎) at a time. She started over 60 years ago, probably just the beginning of an idea, but she kept at it.”
“Imagine,” I said. “If I had an idea and worked at it, just a little bit every day, what might I have achieved ” Carolyn looked at me, smiling. “Start tomorrow,” she said. “Better yet, start today.”

The Sahara Desert, the largest desert in the world. It covers 11 countries in North Africa and is over 9 million square kilometers. That’s more than 25% of Africa.
In the Sahara, temperatures are very different during the day and at night. It is much hotter during the day than at night. During the day, the hottest time is between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. —when temperatures rise to 33℃ . But it is very cold at night—the coldest time is at 4 a.m., when temper atures fall to -1℃. The Sahara is very dry. The precipitation(降水量) in a year is only about 70 millimeters. Because of the extreme temperatures in the desert, it is a very diff icult place to sur vive(求生). Marco Rivera, our survival expert, has some tips.
Take warm clothes and a blanket(毛毯). You will need a hat, long trousers and a woollen coat to keep you warm at night. During the day, cover your body, head and face. Clothes protect you from the sun and keep water in your body. You will also need a warm blanket at night.
A car is easier to see than a person walking in the desert. You can also use the mirrors from your car to make planes and other cars notice you. You can use your car tyres(轮胎) to make a fire. It will help people find you and it will keep you warm at night.
Try to drink some water at least once every hour. You need your water to last as long as possible. You can live for three weeks with no food, but you can only live for three days without water.
It is very important to stay out of the sun during the day. Make a hole under your car and lie there. This will keep you cool and help you sleep. Find a warm place to sleep at night. A small place near a tree or a rock will be the warmest. But be careful before you decide where to sleep. Dangerous animals like snake sand scorpions(蛇沙蝎子) also like to sleep in these places. Look carefully for animals before you lie down.
