--Writing an application letter
Teaching objectives:
At the end of this period, students are expected to be able to:
Realize the structure and contents of an application letter for a job;
Master the useful expressions of an application letter;
Follow the sample to write an application letter for a job vacancy;
Self-evaluate their writing according to the given assessment criteria.
Teaching procedures:
Note: T=teacher; Ss=students; IW=individual work; PW=pair work; GW=group work; CW=class work; IP=interactive pattern.
Stages Class activities Rationale IP
Step 1 Lead-in 1. T raises the question “What part time job have you ever taken ” to activate the students’ relevant experience about job application. 2. T introduces the topic of job application. 教师通过提问激活学生的相关经历,引出求职的相关话题。 IW & CW
Step 2 1st Reading for content T asks Ss to read the job advertisement and predict the content of the application letter. T instructs the students to realize the contents of an application letter by matching the headings to the sections; Ss are asked to judge how qualified the applicant is for the job. 通过读前预测、读后验证,了解申请信的结构与内容。 IW & CW
Step 3 2nd Reading for language Ss reread the application letter to prepare themselves for the writing task in expressions; T invites Ss to give more expressions and sentence structure. 通过阅读所给的申请信,提取可用的语言结构;头脑风暴补充更多可用的短语及句型。 IW & PW
Step 4 Preparation for writing Ss read another job advertisement and plan for their application letter by answering the following questions: Q1: What job are you applying for Q2: What previous experience makes you suitable for the job Q3: What relevant qualifications do you have T guides Ss to draw a mind map to list their previous experience and relevant qualifications. 教师引导学生仔细阅读招聘广告,明确其要求; 指导学生通过思维导图的形式列出写作的内容。 PW
Step 5 Writing T guides Ss to make up full sentences based on the mind map, following the sentence structures learned above. T shows Ss how to join the sentences, using some discourse connectives to make their writing coherent. 运用所给句式结构,将思维导图的内容以句子的形式输出,并运用合适的连接词将单句连句成文。 GP
Step 6 Self-evaluation T asks Ss to self-evaluate their writing according to the given assessment criteria; 依据所给的评价标准,让学生完成对自己写作内容的自我评价。 IW
Step 7 Presentation (if time permits) T shows the sample. 老师展示范文。
