Have a question about when the Oakland Zoo is open Or, perhaps, want to know what times the elephants are fed info@ is the email address you will want to use. As it turns out, it is also the email address to use if you need to save a man's life. At least, that's what Dr.
Colin Feeney did.
"I believe the Oakland Zoo saved this man's life," Feeney said. The story begins in late January when an elderly man was admitted to Feeney's hospital. Feeney said, at first, it looked as if the man might be suffering from food poisoning, but he did not respond to treatment."Although we gave him some medicine, he got worse and worse,' Feeney said.
Eventually, test results showed a parasite 生虫),one rarely found in the United States, was attacking the patient's intestines ()Feeney knew, from experience, just what medicine the man needed to save his life."I had had a patient like him 10 years before who had this kind of infection and died before he was able to get the medication," Feeney said."I did not want that to happen again.”
The powerful medicine Feeney needed was called ivermectin. It's approved for use in humans in a pill form, but for a man whose intestines have stopped functioning, that was not going to work.08:32Feeney needed an injectable (可注射的)form of the drug and that is only approved in the United States for use in animals.
He contacted the FDA for approval for emergency use, but that was going to take time-time the patient didn't have. He also talked with the drug's manufacturer and was suggested that he should get in touch with the Oakland Zoo and get the drug which was in great need. Feeney had no choice but to follow his suggestion.

Paragraph 1:
With time running out, he immediately sent an email to the zoo. In the email, he explained that the patient suffered painfully. The receptionist at the Oakland Zoo who monitored the general email inbox found it. The inbox is normally filled with hundreds of less urgent questions about tickets and zoo hours."Letters like this email seldom come in,"the man said.“I contacted my coworker right away..'”Soon the zoo gathered the supplies Feeney needed to save the man,in just a matter of hours, and handed him the medicine through the window of his car as he drove past.
Paragraph 2:
Finally, the patient survived."Knowing we could change the case with something so simple was very meaningful to everyone around here," the receptionist said. He added that everyone would surely help those in great need. And it was a great pleasure for the zoo to help with this kind of emergency. Once it was clear that the patient was going to recover, Feeney sent a letter to the zoo to thank them for all their help.

I'm the proud mother of two red-headed boys, Tyler and Sam. Our house is full of noise, questions, and excitement all the time. There are always extra boys around. We live by their activity schedules. There's never enough food in the house and dirty laundry piles(衣服堆)grow to the size of a mountain.
Mornings are particularly stressful. More times than I can count I hear,.“I 'm not done yet'” in the morning. None of us like getting up and dressed to leave by 7:00 on weekday mornings. By the time we leave, I sometimes feel I've worked a full day.
One morning, with no exception, Tyler and Sam were very difficult to manage. No one had slept well the night before because Sam was sick.
My husband volunteered to take Sam to see the doctor. As Tyler and I rushed out, late as usual, Sam followed us to the doorway.
Waving good-bye, he said, "I love you, Mom-my. Have a good day at school."His voice was so sweet. I looked back. The sight of my little two-year-old, standing there in his pajamas waving that cute little chubby hand, broke my heart. I ran back, gave him a big hug and told him Mommy loved him too.
I'm a special education director. I spend days meeting with parents, testing students with disabilities and deciding what's best for them educationally.
That day I was at the State School for the Severely Handicapped. The meeting was about a lengthy list of skills that the parents of a handicapped(child in our district needed the state school to teach their child.
As the meeting progressed, the teacher from the state school asked the parents," If there is only one thing that we can teach your child this year, what is the most important thing you want your child to learn ”
Paragraph 1:
The dad called Alex told us that he wanted to hem“I love you'”from his child.

Paragraph 1:
The dad called Alex told us that he wanted to hear "I love you" from his child. He continued to say," There is no doubt that we hope our child can learn many other things, such as saying 'Thank you' and behaving himself every day. But if we could only pick one thing, we would want our child to learn to say 'I love you'. We have had six years of struggles and failures and have never had our child tell us ‘I love you'. He told us ‘I love you' before we left to work last month, which was our proudest moment. So right now that's the most important thing to us."
Paragraph 2:
I sat there in amzement. These parents had hardly heard those three simple words, which I take for granted every day. I sat there thinking back to that very morning, when Sam stood waving at me and telling me he loved me like I was the greatest person in the world. It was his three words that made me realize the power of saying" I love you".
Suddenly, my busy mornings , sleepless nights and noisy boys were not stressful at all. The dad's answer made me thankful for my two boys.

“Watch out !You nearly hit that car !”my father shouted at me.“Can't you do anything right ”Those words hurt worse than blows. I was impatient and turned my head toward the elderly man in the seat beside me. I wasn't prepared for another battle."I saw the car, Dad. Please don't yell 喊)at me when I'm driving.”My voice was measured, sounding far calmer than I really felt.
Dad stared at me in anger, then turned away and settled back.
After getting home, I left Dad in front of the television and went outside to collect my thoughts.
Dark, heavy clouds hung in the air with a promise of rain. The sound of distant thunder seemed to echo my anxiety. What could I do about him
Dad had been a lumberjack(伐木工)in Washington and Oregon. He had liked being outdoors and testing his strength against the force of nature. He had entered backbreaking lumberjack competitions and the shelves in his house were filled with prizes that proved his powers.
The years marched on and on. The first time he couldn't lift a heavy log, he joked about it; but later that same day I saw him outside alone, trying his best to lift it. From then on, he became easily annoyed whenever anyone joked about his advancing age, or when he couldn't do something he had done as a younger man. Four days after his sixty-seventh birthday, he had a heart attack.
An ambulance rushed him to hospital. At the hospital, Dad had an operation immediately. He was lucky; he survived...But something inside Dad died. His enthusiasm for life was gone. He refused to follow doctors' orders. Suggestions and offers of help were also turned aside. The number of visitors thinned, and then no one visited him.
Dad was left alone.
My husband, Dick, and I asked Dad to come to live with us on our small farm. We hoped the fresh air and simple atmosphere would help him adjust.

参考答案:
Paragraph 1:
Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. He was unsatisfied with everything I did. I became impatient and moody. I tried everything I could to make him happy. But nothing worked. Just when I was giving up hope, a friend of mine suggested that we should adopt a pet. Then I drove to an animal shelter nearby. One skinny small cat ,whose eyes were calm and clear, caught my attention. I really liked it.
Paragraph 2:
I drove home with the cat from the animal shelter. But as I presented the cat to Dad, he just turned back toward the house.
Unhappiness rose inside me."You'd better get used to him, Dad. He will live here!"I said. Hearing those words, Dad's eyes narrowed. We stood staring at each other when suddenly the cat ran toward Dad, sitting in front of him. Patiently it waited. Sympathy finally replaced the anger in Dad's eyes while he was on his knees hugging the animal. It was the beginning of a warm friendship.
Gradually Dad's bitterness disappeared and his peace of mind and enthusiasm came back
