As the days passed, the red rose often looked at the cactus and said bad words about it, like “ This plant is useless. How sorry I am to be his neighbor! ”
The cactus never got angry and even tried to advise the rose, saying, “ God did not create any form of life without a purpose. ”
Spring passed, and the weather became very hot. As there was no rain, the red rose began to die.
One day the rose saw birds put their beaks (喙) into the cactus and then fly away. The red rose asked the pine tree what the birds were doing. The pine tree explained that the birds were getting water from the cactus.

I have a special place in my heart for libraries. I have for as long as I can remember. I was always a book lover, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library.
My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old. It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time.
As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place and an added meaning in my life. I had several children and books were our main source (来源) of entertainment. It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out books to read or books they wanted me to read to them.
I always read, using different voices, as though I were acting out the stories with my voice and they loved it! It was a special time to bond (黏合) with my children and it filled them with the wonderment of books.
Now, I see my children taking their children to the library and I love that the excitement of going to the library lives on from generation to generation.
As a novelist, I've found a new relationship with libraries. I encourage readers to go to their local library when they can't afford to buy a book. I see libraries as a safe haven (避风港) for readers and writers, a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book. Libraries, in their own way, help fight book piracy (盗版行为) and I think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can. Encourage readers to use the library. Share library announcements on your social media. Talk about them when you can.

Nothing says Chinese New Year like a bright red lantern. It swings and shines its good luck message and the color red also symbolizes happiness in Chinese culture. Each year, China’ s lantern festival brings more knowing to the traditional form of lighting.
Spring Festival usually falls in late January or early to mid-February and marks a time when family members return home for family dinner. During this period, lanterns can be found all around towns and countryside.
The Agence France-Presse writes that there is a village of Tuntou, in north China’s Hebei Province, telling the world that it is the country’s “ lantern capital” . For the past two months, the village has been making the pumpkin-shaped lights in preparation for the biggest holiday of the year. The craftsmen (工匠) must make thousands of handmade lanterns in time. ▲
Tuntou has a long history of lantern making. It’s reported that the village has specialized in lantern-making for almost 40 years. It is not the site of large factories, instead the industry is driven by a number of private workshops. Workers spend a lifetime working on their craft. Then they pass along their skills to their relatives.
Bai Liwei, the village’s Party leader, tells reporters proudly that 80 to 90 percent of the lanterns used in China come from here. “ Outside of the peak holiday season, we also receive special requests: business openings, for example, or orders to decorate (装饰)the Forbidden City in Beijing,” Bai said. “ Tens of millions of lanterns are produced each year and all or almost all of them are sold. Some of them are even sent to Southeast Asia, the US or Japan. It’s become an economic backbone for the village.”
And there is one more thing for sure — China’s lantern business isn’t slowing down any time soon.

I don't really have a hero. There are many people I respect, but they are not really my heroes. Some people choose very strange heroes. My friends have rock stars and football players as heroes. Of course, these people are very good at what they do, but they're not really heroes. They get lots of money for doing what they love. When they're not singing or playing football, I wonder what they're doing.
I think most of the world's heroes are unsung heroes. Some people work to help others every day. We generally don't notice these heroes. Then there are those who put their lives on the line for others. Fire fighters, police officers and soldiers are heroes. Without them, the world would be less safe. All of them, I respect the heroes who fight COVID-19 most.
As a Wuhan native, Wang Yong ran a large network of volunteers who helped medical workers go to work, return home and order food. Zhang Jixian worked in the front line to fight the virus in Wuhan. People are no stranger to artificial intelligence (AI), which is reshaping our lives in every way. Here a Forbes (福布斯) article has told some AI trends for 2021.
Smarter analysis (分析)
The year of 2020 saw the power of AI. Fast-tracking (追踪) and immediate number report have saved many lives from the virus. In 2021, AI will be widely used in many health-care areas, including finding solutions to deal with cancer. By using machine learning to analyse medical papers written last year about COVID-19, AI will help us notice outbreaks, find connection between corona virus cases (冠状病毒感染病例). It can also enable doctors to make correct judgement and develop better vaccines (疫苗) by predicting virus’ possible development and changes in the future, .
Automated detection (自动检测) and prevention
It seems people have gotten used to being scanned by a contactless thermometer (无接触温度计) to tell their body temperature, when walking into a store or shopping mall. They may also have to scan a QR code (二维码) recording where they have been to and show their green health code to doorkeepers. Behind this, facial recognition (人脸识别) technology enables the fast tracking. Facial recognition has been used by police to detect lockdown breakers, as well as track the movements of the ones who might carry the virus within a crowd. More AI-driven technologies, such as facial recognition, will be put into practice this year.
Pandemic (流行病) prevention
AI is heading toward pandemic prediction as a main public health application. According to Forbes, most AI algorithms (演算程序) are trying to build systems that can predict when and where future outbreaks will take place so that people can take action to stop them from happening. However, for better predictions, problems such as the sharing of information need to be solved through working together among countries.
AI ______ in 2020 according to the passage above.
discovered solutions to cure cancer
B. helped track corona virus cases
C. provided possible methods to develop vaccines
D. accurately predicted the virus’ changes
57. What is the key technology to the tracking system mentioned in paragraph 3
A. QR codes. B. Contactless thermometers.
C. Green health code. D. Facial recognition technology.
58. The passage suggests that ______.
A. with the help of AI, we can help stop the pandemic in 2021
B. with the help of AI, we can find more people move around
C. people in the world need to work together to fight against the pandemic
D. those advanced countries like USA, UK, should work to stop the pandemic.

Long ago, humans lived a simple life, moving from place to place. When the sun came up, people began to collect food. When the sun went down, they went to sleep for the night.
All of that changed once they began to develop towns. (55)At this point, they needed a way to tell time. This is when the first useful time-telling tool was invented: the sundial (日晷). As the sun travelled across the sky, it cast shadows (投射阴影) on the face of the sundial. Using these shadow marks, it was possible to get a general idea of the time of the day. (52.B)
The hourglass was another basic time-telling tool. It was made up of two glass containers (容器) connected by a glass tube. As sand flowed (流淌) from the top glass container through the neck to the bottom glass container, it was possible to get a general idea of the time.
Different types of water clocks were invented next. A measured substance (this time, water) flowed out of one container into another container. When all of the water had flowed into the second container, people would know that a specific (特定的) amount of time had passed.
In the 11th century, mechanical (机械的) clocks were invented, but they weren’t very accurate (精准的). They lost fifteen minutes each day. Mechanical clocks became more accurate when small springs (发条) were added to move the hands of the clock. As a result of this invention, clocks became smaller and for the first time, watches were built using this spring system.
Over the next 300 years, many improvements were made to clocks. When there were factories making lots of clocks and watches, soon many people could afford a clock or watch.
By the 1950s, digital (数字的) watches were invented. The telling of time had entered the modern age.
In 1967, the atomic (原子能的) clock was developed. In 1999, further improvements were made. The atomic clock is now accurate to within one second every twenty million years.
