【Teaching Focus】
1. To tell the differences between the simple past tense and the present perfect tense by using different time expressions : ago, since and for.
2. Distinguish and understand when to use the transient verbs and continuous verbs.

Step 1 Revision and Lead in
1. Ask the students to complete some sentences to review the difference between “have (has) been” and “have (has) gone”.
? My father __________ to Beijing. He will be back in two days.
? The Greens __________ to the USA twice.
? A: Where is your aunt now? I haven’t seen her for a long time.
? B: She ___________ to Xiamen.
? The Class1, Grade 8 students ___________ to many places of interest in our city.
? A: ______ Tommy _______ to Hong Kong?
? B: Yes. He went there last month and hasn’t come back yet.
2. Translate three sentences.
? Tom 在哪儿?他去书店了。
? Jack 去过上海两次了。
? 我来南京10 年了。
Ask the students to pay attention to the sentence “I have been in Nanjing for 10 years.” Use a timeline to explain that this sentence shows a continuous action. We can say “I came to Nanjing 10 years ago.” but cannot say “I have come to Nanjing for 10 years.” because the action “come” cannot continue for a period of time.
Step 2 Presentation
1. Show pictures and some correct sentences and incorrect ones to help students distinguish the transient verbs and continuous verbs.
e.g. Millie borrowed a book two days ago. ( √ )
Millie has borrowed the book for two days. ( × )
Millie has kept the book for two days / since two days ago. ( √ )
( borrow→keep, buy→have, join→be in/be a member of, get married→be married, leave→ be away, die→be dead )
2. Tell students that some verbs, such as come, go and leave, cannot be used with continuous time adverbials, such as for two hours or since last month. To talk about an action that happened at a point in the past, we will have to use ago and the simple past tense.
3. Show a table to help students understand how to express a continuous state.

5. Ask students to work in pairs and complete Millie and Sandy’s conversation on Page 33. Check answers and explain some difficult sentences.
