(2021赣州模拟)In some science fiction movies, evil(邪恶)robots refuse to die,no matter how hard people fight back.
Now science fiction has become science fact. For the first time, scientists have made a robot that can take a beating(挨打) and keep on going.Scientists from Cornell University made the robot, which looks like a spider with four legs.
Until now, even the most advanced(先进的) robot is almost certain to break down when it is damaged(毁坏). That is because its computer inside simply doesn’t know how to make the machine work after its shape has changed.
To deal with this problem, the scientists put eight motors(发动机) and two sensors(传感器) that read how the machine is working. They all give signals to the machine’s software.Using the information, the computer can then figure out the machine’s shape at any moment.
The new technology is a big advance in robot-making,scientists say,and it’s far from being scary. It may someday help scientists create better artificial(假的) arms and legs and give new freedom to people who lose them. It might also help scientists understand how people and animals figure out their own sense of place in space.
“It has been difficult to design robots that can work well when the environment changes or when it’s damaged,” said Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in the US. “With this work,we are closer to solving this problem.”
( ) 1. What does the new technology allow the robot to do
A. Do homework for humans. B. Tell people when it is.
C. Use a computer. D. Keep working after being damaged.

The summer is a great time to be in Britain. With sunny days and long days, it is the best season for holding various celebrations, festivals and competitions. The British Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Tate Gallery are all a must-see for everybody who comes to the country, but there are also a lot of interesting things to do for those who love the outdoors.
The Notting Hill Carnival(狂欢节) changes the face of the famous London in the last weekend of August. It’s the largest street festival in Europe. First held in 1964, it’s a celebration of Caribbean(加勒比的) culture but now includes Brazilians, Africans, Europeans and anybody else who likes to dress colorfully and feels the urge to dance to the sound of a beat.
With its popularity growing, it’s said that 50,000 performers will take part in the parade, attracting more than 1 million people over the weekend.
Outside the capital there are also many things to do. Early in August there’s the Robin Hood Festival in Sherwood Forest Country Park. The legendary(传奇的) character of books and movies—Robin Hood—can be found there. For those who love nature, there’re always forests to enjoy.
In mid-August, in Bristol, a city about 200km from London, the sky is filled with color during its annual balloon festival. If the weather is good, more than 100 hot air balloons rise up from the Fiesta’s site in Ashton Court.
Britain is full of traditions and sometimes just stopping at a country bar for a beer or having cream tea in a small tea room can make a moment special. Anyway, you will have a nice holiday there!

Plastic pollution has long been a problem, but now it has got to a new height.
Micro-plastics, plastic particles(颗粒) less than 5 millimeters, have been found on Mount Qomolangma as high as 8,440 meters above sea level, according to a recent study in One Earth. “These are the highest micro-plastics ever discovered so far,” lead writer Imogen Napper from the University of Plymouth, UK, said.
Scientists collected snow and water samples from 19 different locations from 4, 200 meters above sea level all the way up to the top of Mount Qomolangma.
They found micro-plastics in all the water samples and part of the snow samples. The most polluted sample was from the Base Camp in Nepal, where there are many human activities. It had 79 particles of micro-plastics per liter(升) of snow.
But how can they get there The answer is human activities. It is climbers who bring plastic products to the mountain. Even if they don’t litter, just walking for 20 minutes or opening a bottle of water can send micro-plastics into the environment.
The plastic pollution has reached the most distant places on Earth. Researchers even found a plastic bag at the deepest point in the world’s oceans—the Mariana Trench(马里亚纳海沟). The bag is the same as the ones commonly used in stores.
Even covered in ice, the Arctic is still polluted by plastic. A 2020 report in Nature suggests that there are 2,000 to 17,000 plastic particles per cubic meter in Arctic ice cores(冰芯), and between 0 to 18 plastic particles per cubic meter from the water under the ice. Experts think micro-plastics may be transported by air and then reach the North Pole in snowfall.
We don’t know the potential(潜在的) problems these plastic particles would bring to the environment and our health, said a scientist. Then what can we do We need to turn to high technology, like using new environment-friendly materials instead of plastic when possible.

Where does our food come from Once upon a time carrots were purple, there were no pineapples in Asia or lemons in America, and many people thought potatoes were poisonous (有毒的). Many kinds of fruit and vegetables grew only in one place. So how did they spread all over the world
Changing colors
Five thousand years ago, carrots only grew in Afghanistan and most were purple. Only a few were orange as they are today! Farmers in the Netherlands were looking for a fruit or a vegetable to represent their king, William of Orange, and orange carrots were just what they were looking for—they became the ancestors (祖先) of all modern carrots.
At home in the mountains
Many plants only grow in certain places on Earth, often deep in the jungle. The home of potatoes is in the mountains of the Andes in South America. Bananas come from Papua New Guinea and lemons grow wild in China.
World travel
But once people realized that many of these plants were good to eat, they took them from the places where they grew. Fruit, in particular, attracted thirsty travelers. Many Arab businessmen transported different fruits and vegetables around the world, such as oranges, which they took from Asia to distant countries such as Spain. The Spanish returned from South America with many new types of food, including chocolate, chili and corn.
Some unusual uses
People often had problems deciding what to do with these new fruits and vegetables, or used them for different purposes from today. Carrots were used not as food but as medicine to protect people from poison or even (it was believed) to make people fall in love. The first tomatoes and pineapples were grown not as food but to make the garden look beautiful. And many people were worried about potatoes—although they are good for us, their leaves are poisonous—and poorer people believed they could be used for black magic. In Germany, people only began eating potatoes when the king ordered that people who did not eat them should have their ears and noses cut off!
And today...
Today, we are so used to our different types of food that we don’t think about where they came from. We are trying to know the roots (根源) of them. But for each pineapple, potato or carrot we eat, there is a long history!

Everyone knows by now that plastic pollution is a big problem for the environment.Beijing, for example, has dealt with this by stopping using thin plastic bags, plastic tableware(餐具)and other plastic products in supermarkets, restaurants and hotels since May 1, 2020.
But an even better solution might be on the way.Researchers at a French company called Carbios have discovered a bacterial enzyme(细菌酶)that can break down plastic. The enzyme, which was first found in compost(堆肥)leaves, can not only break down plastic in hours, but also use the things left to create new products.
In fact, the first compost enzyme was found in 2012.Scientists changed its genes(基因), allowing it to break down 90 percent of one ton of waste plastic in less than 10 hours. It had been completely forgotten, but it turned out to be the best, said Professor Alain Marty, chief science officer at Carbios.
The new enzyme was discovered in research published in April, 2020. Before that, the team, led by Professor Alain Marty, studied over 100, 000 micro organisms(微生物)to find one that could break down plastic quickly.
The enzyme especially breaks down PET, a kind of plastic that is most commonly used for plastic bottles and food packaging. It is also the fifth most common kind of plastic that we use.
However, waste bottles must be ground(磨碎的)and heated before the new enzyme is mixed in.These will make the recycled PET more expensive. But because of a shortage of this recycled plastic, people still like paying more money for it.
Carbios said it is working together with companies like Pepsi and Nestle—main users of plastic themselves—to develop their research and start using the enzyme in the factories. “There is still a lot of work to do to use it in the factories, but this opens the door,” said a research scientist.

Socrates(苏格拉底) is a famous ancient Greek thinker, philosopher(哲学家) and educator. On the first day of school, Socrates told his students, “Today, we’ll only learn one thing, that is, to stretch(前伸) for your arms, and then try to swing(甩动) them back.” He showed them and as a result, all the students laughed. “Sir, is it also learned ” one of the students laughed.
“Of course! You think this is an easy thing, but in fact, it is very difficult,” Socrates answered seriously(严肃地). Hearing this, all the students laughed even harder.
Without being a little angry, Socrates said, “In this class I’ll teach you how to learn this action well. After that, start today, and you will do it 100 times a day.” 10 days later, Socrates asked, “Who still insists(坚持) on swinging his arms ” About 80% of the students raised their hands. 20 days later, Socrates asked again, “Who still insists on swinging his arms ” About 50% of them raised their hands. 3 months later, Socrates asked again, “Who still insists on the simplest action of swinging ” This time only one student raised his hand. On June 18, China successfully launched the Shenzhou-12 manned spaceship, beginning a new time for human’s exploration(探索)of space. They will remain here for three months. But do you know how the astronauts live in space
Just like us, they still need to eat. Astronauts eat three meals a day. Nutritionists(营养学家) ensure the food astronauts eat provides them with vitamins. Calorie requirements differ for astronauts. For instance, a woman would require only about 1,900 calories a day, while a man would require about 3,200. An astronaut can choose from many types of foods such as fruits, chicken, beef, seafood and candy. Available drinks include coffee, tea and orange juice.
To use the toilet, they sit on the special seat and fasten a belt across their laps to keep themselves safe in position. It helps them to maintain a sufficiently tight seal(密封垫) on the seat, as airflow from the fan separates the fecal(粪便) from their body and collects it in the fecal collection bag.
Sleeping is harder here in space than on a bed because the sleep position here is the same position throughout the day. You don’t ever get that sense of relaxation that you do on Earth after a busy day at work.

Austrian company Tec-Innovation recently showed smart shoes that use ultrasonic sensors(超声波传感器) to help people suffering from blindness or vision impairments(视力障碍者) to detect obstacles(障碍物) up to four meters away.
Known as InnoMake, the smart shoe aims to become an alternative to the decades-old walking stick that millions of people around the world depend on to get around as safely as possible. The currently available model relies on sensors to detect obstacles and warns the wearer via a Bluetooth-linked smartphone. That sounds cool enough, but the company is already working on a much more advanced version that includes cameras and artificial intelligence to detect not only obstacles but also their nature.
“Not only is the warning that I am facing an obstacle, but also the information about what kind of obstacle I am facing. Because it makes a big difference whether it’s a wall, a car or a staircase,” Markus Raffer, one of the founders of Tec-Innovation, told TechXplore.
The current version of the InnoMake shoe is already available for purchase on the Tec-Innovation website, for 3, 200 per pair.
The advanced system is put in the front of the shoes, in a waterproof and dustproof case. It is powered by a heavy-duty battery that can last for up to one week, depending on use. The battery can be charged in just three hours, using a USB cable.
The next step for Tec-Innovation is to use the data collected by its system to create a kind of street view navigation map for visually impaired people.

We all know that a healthy life means getting both plenty of exercise and enough good-quality sleep, but reality often gets in the way. The new research shows that doing enough exercise could make up for some of the unhealthy influences of bad sleep.
While the health benefits of exercise and sleep are nothing new, it’s the relationship between them that is interesting in this particular study—it could even give doctors another option to suggest for patients dealing with sleep problems.
“We found those who had both the poorest sleep quality and exercised the least were most at risk of death from heart disease, stroke, and cancer,” says epidemiologist Bo-Huei Huang, from the University of Sydney in Australia.
“The findings suggest a likely interplay, between the two kinds of behavior.”
The weekly amount of exercise recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) is 150 minutes of moderately(适中地) intensive(加强的) activity, or more than 75 minutes of vigorously(剧烈地) intensive physical activity.
In the case of all forms of cancer, for example, those at the unhealthiest end of the sleep and exercise scale had a 45 percent higher risk of dying from cancer than those with good sleep who kept physically active. However, that risk disappeared for those who didn’t sleep well but did well in physical activity.
“Considering that physical activity is perhaps more controllable than sleep, our study offers people more health incentives(激励) to be physically active and provides health professionals with more reasons to prescribe(为……开处方) physical activity to patients with sleep problems,” says population health researcher Emmanuel Stamatakis, from the University of Sydney.
