W: This is a great jacket, but look at the price! It's
too expensive. $ 600!
M: No, wait. It's pretty reasonable. You're thinking
in US dollars not Hong Kong dollars. It's only
about 100 US dollars.
W: You’re right.

M: Hi, Kate! Is your daddy at home
W: No, Mr. Smith. He went out 10 minutes ago. Any

W: What time is your flight, then
M: 10: 50. And I’ll leave at about 9:15.
(Text 5)
M: Can I help you
W: Yes. Are there any spare rooms here

W: That might be more rooms than I need. I don’t have much
furniture.

W: Oh, hi, Paul. I’m on my way to the library.

only have three classes, but in all of them I have lots of reading,
research papers, reports and exams. I feel like I’ll never get
through anything.
M: That’s terrible. I felt like that last year when I had term papers to
write, but this term seems easy now. I spend a lot of time in
class, but most of it is in the labs. I hated writing all those term
papers. But I can't take you into going to the show anyway
W: Oh, now I’m sure I won’t go.

M: I'll have a class at 11:00. I usually go out for breakfast

W: What changes do you think will take place in the next 50 years
M: I imagine that the greatest change will be the difference between humans and machines.
W: What do you mean
M: I mean it will be harder to tell the difference between the human and the machine.
W: Can you describe it more clearly
M: As science develops, it will be possible for all parts of one's body to be replaced. A computer will work like the human brain. The computer can recognize one’s feelings, and act in a feeling way.
W: You mean man-made human beings will be produced Come on! That's out of the question!
M: Don’t get excited, please. That’s only my personal imagination!
W: Go on, please. I won’t take it seriously.
M: We will then be able to create a machine that is a copy of ourselves. We'll appear to be alive long after we are dead.
W: What a ridiculous idea!
M: It’s possible that a way will be found to put our spirit into a new body. Then, we can choose to live as long as we want.
W: In that case, the world would be a hopeless mess!
(Text 10)
Earthquakes are something that most people fear. There are some places that have few or no earthquakes. Most places in the world, however, have them regularly. Countries that have a lot of earthquakes are usually quite mountainous.
The strongest earthquake that ever happened in North America was in 1964. It happened in Alaska. In 1755, one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded was felt in Portugal. Around 20,000 people died. In 1923 a very powerful earthquake hit Tokyo. 140,000 people died. The worst earthquake ever reported was in China. 830,000 people were killed in this quake in 1556.
Earthquakes are not the only acts of nature which people fear. There are typhoons, floods and so on. But they probably don't worry people as much as earthquakes do. The reason is that we often know when and how they are coming, so far, however, no sure way is known to predict an earthquake. When one comes, it is a surprise. People cannot prepare for it. So thousands of people still die in earthquakes nowadays such as the one in China in 1976.
