The Kings Speech
The King’s Speech is a 2010 British film directed by Tom Hooper. The film stars Colin Firth as King George VI, Geoffrey Rush as Lionel Logue and Helena Bonham Carter as Queen Elizabeth. At the 83rd Academy Awards (the Oscars), the film won Best Picture and Colin Firth won Best Actor in a Leading Role.
Read the film review of The King’s Speech and try to understand its structure.
Based on a true story, the film is set in London in the 1930s. Prince Albert, second son of King George V, suffers from a terrible speech problem. The Prince has given up hope of a cure but his wife, Elizabeth, takes him to see Lionel Logue, an Australian speech doctor living in London. Although the two men have very different backgrounds and do not get along at first, they eventually become friends. After the Prince’s elder brother gives up being King, Prince Albert becomes King George VI.
The film looks like a fairly typical historical film without fancy special effects, and it is made enjoyable by the performances of the main actors. Firth is successful in showing us the King’s struggles as well as his courage. He has great chemistry with Rush and Bonham Carter, whose characters are both very believable. In the meantime, Hooper skillfully creates uncertainty and tension with narrow indoor sets and dark lighting.

I wasn’t happy about …
…appealed to me/didn’t appeal to me because…
A: I felt pleased after watching Despicable Me 3. It’s full of fun and energy. The directors Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda did a great job.
B: Their style appealed to me too because they included some serious but tender moments like Gru’s relationship with his daughters. The storyline also flows smoothly because it takes place shortly after the end of Despicable Me 2.
A: I think Steve Carell’s voice acting is impressive. He plays both roles for Gru and Dru, Gru’s long-lost brother, Kristen Wiig is Gru’s wife Lucy and together they add humor to the problems they face while trying to stop Balthazar Bratt.
B: You’re right! The evil villain tries to steal a big diamond and gets the husband-wife team kicked out of the Anti-Villain League. I couldn’t stand him, but his 1980s music was interesting.
A: Trey Parker plays him perfectly. The minions are my favorite. At first, I was confused about their role in the film and with their language, but their adventures made me laugh so much.
B: Me too. I don’t usually watch animated comedy films, but the exciting plot and great animation work make it a film for all ages to enjoy!

Despicable Me 3
Despicable Me 3 is an American animated comedy directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda. It features the voice talents of Steve Carell as main characters Gru and Dru, as well as a star supporting cast including Kristen Wiig, Trey Parker and Miranda Cosgrove. The film has been a big box office success, taking over $1 billion worldwide.
The animated world of the Despicable Me series is very similar to our own, except that it is populated by a variety of villains. The events of Despicable Me 3 take place around the present day, shortly after the end of the second film. Once a villain himself, lead character Gru is now a member of the Anti-Villain League (AVL) together with his wife Lucy(Wiig).
At he start of the film Gru and Lucy are sent to stop the evil plans of Balthazar Bratt (Parker), a 1980s child TV star who has turned evil and wants to Big diamond. However, things do not go well, and the husband-wife team is kicked out of the AVL. Soon afterwards, Gru is contacted by his long-lost brother, Dru, who dreams of being a villain. However, he does not seem to have the talent for it, so he askes Gru for help. At first, Gru refuses, but then he realizes he can team up with Dru to get the diamond back and rejoin the AVL.
The film is full of fun and energy, helped by the excellent voice actors. Humor often comes from the contrast between Gru and Dru’s evil ways and Gru’s responsibility of being a parent to his three daughters. The famous yellow minions also provide plenty of laughs. The storyline does not take itself too seriously, but the film does have its tender moments.
Kids will love the great animation work and the over-the-top action, while parents will dig the 1980s soundtrack and relate to Gru and Lucy’s parenting troubles. In short, Despicable me 3 is a film that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.
