Many times Ben did find out things that no one knew before. The other boys would say, “That Ben Franklin! He’s always finding out something new!”
Ben lived close to the water. He liked to go there to see the boats. He saw how the wind blew them across the water.
One day Ben said to himself, “Why can’t the wind help me float across the water? And I’m going to try.” Ben got his big kite. He took hold of the kite string and ran with it. The wind took the kite up into the air. Then Ben jumped into the water.
The wind blew the kite high into the air. Ben began to float across the water. Soon he was on the other side, and he had not worked at all.

Parents are often amazed at how fast their child grows and develops. New research has determined that the ability to quantify(量化) may develop much sooner than most parents realize.
Kristy, professor of the University of Missouri, has determined that contrary to what previous studies have shown, infants(婴儿)are able to quantify substances(物质)--- like sand or water--- as early as 10 months. As long as the difference between the two substances is large enough, infants will choose the larger amount, especially when it comes to food.
With the assistance of her team researchers, Kristy tested the quantifying skills of babies by presenting them with two cups: one containing a small amount of food, and one containing a larger amount. Consistently(一致地), the babies chose the larger amount.
“Several studies throughout the last 15 years have shown that infants are very good at telling how many objects they see; however, infants don’t seem to count things like water or sand,” Kristy said. “What we’re saying is that they can quantify substances; it’s just much harder. The infants can see how much food goes into each cup and compare that in their memories. They decide which amount is larger, and they almost always select the larger one.”
This information further refutes the long-held idea that babies “know nothing of the world,” Kristy said.
“Since psychologists have begun studying infants with sensitive measures, we’ve discovered a lot of early abilities. I think for parents, it should be exciting to know that there’s somebody in there that has some basic knowledge of the world, and that knowledge is guiding their development,” Kristy said.
In the future, Kristy says this kind of study could be linked to a child’s progress in math-related skills, although programs marketed to increase those abilities, such as “Baby Einstein,” still have mixed reviews when it comes to academic study.
41. The quantifying ability refers to the ability to ________.
A. choose between different substances B. get much knowledge of the world
C. describe the quantity of something D. obtain math-related skills
42. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4?

C. The final choice of infants. D. The observation of infants’ behavior.
43. Babies choose the larger amount of food ________.
A. by saying numbers B. with the help of parents
C. on personal preference D. through their natural abilities

A. Breakthrough in Baby Studies B. Amazing Baby-training Ideas

My first few days in New York (taken from Katy’s diary)
Sunday 2nd July
When I arrived here yesterday, I felt really excited. I’ve always wanted to visit America. I come from Perth, a quiet town in Scotland, and I haven’t seen much of the world. Last year I wrote to Princeton, a very famous university here and asked if I could come and study American Literature. I never thought they would say yes---but they did, and now here I am!
Monday 3rd July
I’m really tired because of the time difference. New York is five hours behind the UK and I’m not finding it easy to switch to local time. I work up at 2 o’clock and went out to have some food and sat at a table on the pavement --- or side walk, as they call it here. I was happy to sit and watch people. The streets are very noisy and everyone walks very fast. I ordered a hamburger with chips and I got one with crisps! Then I walked back to my hotel and went to my room, which I knew was on the first floor. But in America, they say first floor instead of ground floor so I went into the wrong room! I felt so embarrassed. That was the worst moment for me. I felt far away from home and even though Americans and British speak the same language, I was like a foreigner. But the American woman who was in the room laughed and said she had had the same problem in England.
Tuesday 4th July
I slept a bit better last night. In the morning I phoned the waitress to ask for some tea. She couldn’t understand my Scottish accent and I couldn’t understand her New York one! When she brought the tea to my room, she told me it was a holiday in the USA---it’s Independence Day, when the Americans celebrate the beginning of their country’s independence from Britain in 1776. I told her I was British and she invited me to a big party at the International Student Center---that’s “center” where I come from. I met lots of young people from all over the world. It was great! At last I felt at home here and really happy.
