21cnjy.com

Crosby Menzies, a solar power expert in a South African company, described his latest solar cooker called the “Sol-4”. “It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. Pollution insi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )de homes and other buildings kills more than 4 million people each year. Many people die as a result of breathing smoke or from cooking over wood-powered or coal powered stoves.
One way to redu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ce the number of deaths is through cooking equipment powered by the sun. Crosby Menzies, a solar power expert in a South African company, described his latest solar cooker called the “Sol-4”. “It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. It is quite a large cooker.”
The “Sol-4” works ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) by reflecting(反射) light from the sun off large mirrors. The mirrors direct(把……对准) the light at a cooking pan. Then the light heats the pan with solar energy. Within two minutes, the pan is hot enough to cook sausages and onions. In just four minutes, water can be boiled. That is as fast as cooking with natural gas or electricity.
The cooker is also m ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )uch “friendlier” than other models because people do not have to stand in the sun to use it. And people can prepare meals without having to collect firewood or spend money on coal. Such people would be less likely to have breathing illnesses from harmful smoke.
At present, the cook ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )er only works when the sun is shining. But engineers are working on a way to make it work without sunlight.
Each cooker costs abou ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t $2,000, which is a large amount of money for most Africans. To solve that problem, Crosby Menzies has created a non-governmental organization called Solar Cookers for Africa. It plans to raise money through donations to provide poor people with solar cooking equipment.

Several Asian ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )hospitals are doing experiments with tele-medicine. Tele-medicine is a kind of technology that allows doctors to “see” patients without being in the same place. It is possible through high-speed communication networks. At both ends of the line, the way of video-meeting lets them see and talk to each other. Blood pressure and body temperature are directly shown on computers.
Tele-medicin ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e has been already used widely in some countries such as the United States and Germany. Among other uses, village doctors hold “consultations(会诊)” with far-away experts(专家). The experts can also help them during operations.
Tele-medicine has bee ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n slowing to reach Asia because of high costs, besides other reasons. When things are improved, this kind of technology will develop very fast. Chinese University of Hong Kong’s medical school has joined a big hospital in Beijing, and Thailand is building a tele-medicine station connecting 20 areas.
Tele-medicine ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) will do good to patients because doctors from different places can see them and give their medical advice. The help is quite important if the disease is an unusual one. It also helps spread medical knowledge among experts.
As tele-medic ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ine develops well, its costs will be lower and it will become more popular in the medical field.
