①What’s the meaning of the underlined word/ phrase...in Chinese
②The underlined word...refers to/ probably means...
③The underlined word...could be replaced by...
④What is the meaning of...
⑤Which of the following words can take the place of the word...
二:阅读词义猜测题答题技巧
1:根据转折、因果关系猜测词义
通过因果关系猜词,首先是 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )找出生词与上下文之间的逻辑关系,然后才能猜词。有时文章借助关联词(如because, as, since, for, so, thus, as a result, of course, therefore等等)表示前因后果。例如:
You shouldn't h ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ave blamed him for that, for it wasn't his fault.通过for引出的句子所表示的原因(那不是他的错),可猜出blame的词义是“责备”。
2:通过同义词和反义词的关系猜词
通过同义词猜词,一是要看由and或o ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r连接的同义词词组,如happy and gay,即使我们不认识gay这个词,也可以知道它是愉快的意思;二是看在进一步解释的过程中使用的同义词,如Man has known something about the planets Venus, Mars, and Jupiter with the help of spaceships.此句中的Venus(金星)、Mars( 火星)、Jupiter(木星)均为生词,但只要知道planets就可猜出这几个词都属于“行星”这一义域。通过反义词猜词,一是看表转折关系的连词或副词,如but, while, however等;二是看与not搭配的或表示否定意义的词语,如:He is so homely, not at all as handsome as his brother.根据not at all...handsome我们不难推测出homely的意思,即“不好看的、不漂亮的”意思。
3:利用单词的发音进行推测
英语中有些单词来自汉语,与汉语的发 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )音有些相似,另外也有一些单词译成汉语时采用音译,如:sofa(沙发),coffee(咖啡),typhoon(台风),aspirin(阿司匹林),nylon(尼龙)等。因此,利用单词的发音也是一种猜测的手段。
例 The Olympic Games began in the 5th century BC.
One day it was reveal ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed that Mrs Morel had cancer and was beyond any help except that of morphine.2-1-c-n-j-y
解析 上面这两个句子中画线的两个词,只要我们能准确发音,就能知道它们的意思是“奥林匹克”和“吗啡”。
4:通过定义或释义关系来推测词义
例如:But someti ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )mes, no rain falls for a long, long time. Then there is a dry period, or drought.从drought所在句子的上文我们得知很久不下雨,于是便有一段干旱的时期,即drought,由此可见drought意思为“久旱”,“旱灾”。而a dry period和drought是同义语。这种同义或释义关系常由is, or, that is, in other words ,be called或破折号等来表示。
A bag is useful and ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )the word “bag” is useful. It gives us some interesting phrases (短语). One is “ to let the cat out of the bag”. It is the same as “to tell a secret”….
Now when someon ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e lets out (泄漏) a secret, he “lets the cat out of the bag.”

A. makes everyone know a secret B. the woman bought a cat

While the start ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some students at White Cloud Primary School. They became the world’s first kids to be“taught”by an electronic teacher. This electronic teacher is not a human-like robot walking around the classroom. Instead, he is a computer-created head that appears, when needed, on students’ computer or phone screens. His name is Bill.
Created by tech ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nology company Smart Machines. Bill is able to show human-like behavior. He is designed to teach a special program about environmental-friendly power created by the sun and wind. This program, started in 2005, used to be taught by human teachers.

While the star ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some students at White Cloud Primary School. They became the world’s first kids to be“taught”by an electronic teacher. This electronic teacher is not a human-like robot walking around the classroom. Instead, he is a computer-created head that appears, when needed, on students’ computer or phone screens. His name is Bill.
Created by technolog ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )y company Smart Machines. Bill is able to show human-like behavior. He is designed to teach a special program about environmental-friendly power created by the sun and wind. This program, started in 2005, used to be taught by human teachers.
Just like hu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )man teachers, Bill is able to immediately respond to the students’ questions and opinions about the topic. Thanks to computer cameras, he is also able to see and react to students’ physical actions. For example, if a student smiles at Bill, he responds by smiling back. This two-way exchange helps get the students’ attention. More importantly, it allows the program developers to improve Bill’s behavior and knowledge base when needed.
The program ha ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s been a great success, according to Smart Machines spokesman Robert Frost. Frost says,“What is interesting to me is the children’s reaction to Bill.
