2. To compose a formal letter to recommend books to the school library.

I’d recommend / suggest …
If you ask me, I’d pick / choose / go for …
I believe … would be a better choice.
I think … would be better / more effective than …
My favourite books are …, to name a few.
Types of books Reasons Examples
Fantasy
novels
They are effective to get students
Interested in reading.
The Lord
of the Rings
Biographies
They inspire students to study harder and reach their goals.
Marie Curie:
A Life
Steve Jobs
A: Let’s think of books for our school library. I think fantasy novels are more
effective than other types to get students interested in reading. I’d recommend
popular books like The Lord of the Rings.
B: Fantasy isn’t something I’d choose, but if you ask me, I’d pick the Harry Potter series. They got great reviews and have been made into films too. But students should be encouraged to read the books to enjoy the full story.
A: Yes. When a story is adapted into a film, things are often changed or left out.
What types of books do you like
B: My favourite is non-fiction, like biographies. They’re not so popular because people think they’re boring. But they can inspire students to study harder and reach their goals. I’d suggest historical biographies such as Marie Curie: A Life.
A: I believe contemporary biographies like Steve Jobs would be a better choice. He was a pioneer in computer technology, so students will be eager to find out more about his life.
B: Good idea. Reading contemporary biographies can develop students’ interest in
biographies and encourage students to read historical ones too.
A: That’s right. Let’s put our ideas together for the librarian.
Write a letter to the school library to recommend books. Use your ideas from part C and the information in parts A and B to help you.
Planning your writing
Learning about the structure
Begin by clearly stating the purpose of the letter.
Explain what types of books you want to recommend and the reasons.
End the letter by stating the result you wish to see.
Learning about the format
When you write a formal letter, you should begin with Dear Sir / Madam or Dear Mr / Miss / Mrs / Ms … and end with Yours faithfully or Yours sincerely.
Learning about the language
Use formal language instead of spoken language.
Avoid using contracted forms like I’m and he’s.
The librarian
Dear
Yours faithfully,

Dear Librarian,
I am writing to recommend two types of books that I think the library should buy.
The first type is fantasy novels. I think the library needs more fantasy novels because they are very popular with students. Some examples of good fantasy novels for the library would be The Lord of the Rings series and the Harry Potter series.
Pay attention to the useful expressions.
The second type of book I would like to recommend is biographies. Although
they are one of the least popular types of books in our library, students should be encouraged to read more of them.
Good biographies such as Marie Curie: A Life will inspire students to study harder
and reach their goals.
In addition to biographies of historical figures, I believe our school library could buy some biographies of contemporary figures, like Steve Jobs.
I look forward to reading more of the library’s fantasy novels and biographies
soon.
Yours faithfully,
Edward Zhang
