Unit 1 Can you play the guitar?
The First Period (Section A 1a-1c)
Teaching Aims
1.Knowledge Objects
(1) Function: Students know how to use the model verb “can”. Yes/No questions and short answers. “What” questions.
(2) Key Vocabulary:
guitar, join, swim, sing, chess, draw, speak, can’t, play the guitar/chess, join the art/club
Target Language:
① Can you sing/speak English?
② Yes, I can/No, I can’t.
③ What club do you want to join?
④ I want to join the chess club.
Structure: Use the model verb “can”. Yes/No questions and short answers. “What” questions.
2.Ability Objects
(1) Students can develop their abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
(2) Students can develop their abilities of working in pairs and communicating by learning useful structures.
3. Moral Objects
Students can be active in class and show themselves to increase their interest in English learning.

Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Warming up(about 5 minutes)
1. Revise “what do you like? Do you like…? I like…, but I don’t like… Let’s”.
2. Practice in pairs.
Teacher asks: “Do you like music? Let’s enjoy a beautiful song, OK?”
Step 2 Leading in (about 5 minutes)
1. Showing a song by Huang Jiaju on the screen.
2. Ask “What music instrument do you know Huang Jiaju plays?” Elicit “Can you play the guitar?
3. Show a guitar to the class. Ask the student who can play the guitar to come to the blackboard and have a preference.
Step 3 Presentation (about 5 minutes)
1. Draw the pictures in a simple way to teach the vocabulary, and write down the vocabulary patterns on the blackboard..
2. Teacher says the words, let the students act out.
3. Teacher asks “Can you run/…?”(shake or nod head), students answer together “Yes, I can./No, I can’t.”.
Step 4. Pair work (about 5 minutes)
1. Practice this pattern in pairs.
2. Let’s students make their own dialogues.
Step 5. Presentation (about 5 minutes)
Show the pictures on the screen to teach the five clubs in 1a, ask students to point to the name of each club printed on a banner and to repeat it after the teacher.
Step 6. 1a (about 5 minutes)
Read the words in 1a and then let students match each club activity in the picture with a word from the list, finally check the answers.
Step 7. 1b (about 5 minutes)
1. Play the recording the first time. Students only listen.
2. Play the recording a second time. Ask students to write a number(1/2/3) next to the relevant conversation they hear.
Step 8. 1c (about 5 minutes)
Let students make up their own dialogues, and work with their group (four students in one group), practice: “I want to join the…club.” “Can you…?” “Yes, I can./No, I can’t”.
Step 9 Summary (about 3 minutes)
T: In this class, we have learnt the following words: guitar, swim, sing, chess, speak, can’t, dance, draw, join, club
We also must master the following drills:
Can you swim/draw/sing? Yes, I can./No, I can’t.
Can you/he/she/you swim? Yes, I/he/she/we can./No, I/he/she/we can’t.
What club do you want to join? I want to join…club.
Step 10 Homework (about 2 minutes)
1. Written work:
Design a “Word Bank” game, let students fill in blanks.
2. Oral work:
Ask your family members about their abilities, using “Can you…?””Yes, I can./No, I can’t.”
The Second Period (Section A 2a-3c)
Teaching Aims

(1) Function: Talk about abilities with the word “can”.
(2) Key Vocabulary: talk, tell, write, show, story, or, kung fu.

Step 1 Leading in (about 2 minutes)
Watch a video of swimming.
Step 2 Presentation (about 4 minutes)
1. (1) T: What does he do? Can he swim well? Can you swim?
Show more pictures and saying: Can you sing/swim?
(2) Show the picture of Li Yuchun, saying: She is Li Yuchun. She can sing very well. Can you sing?
(3) Show a picture and ask: Can you speak English? Help students to answer: Yes, I can./No, I can’t.
2. Read the new words after teacher. Then pair-work with the sentence structure: Can you…?
3. (1) (Play the sounds of many instruments: guitar/violin/drum/trumpet/piano.) Guess what instrument is it? Can you play the guitar/…?
(Tell the difference between playing basketball, playing chess and playing the guitar. Explain: We should put article “the” before the instruments, but not before the balls or the chess.)
(2)Practice: Can you play the guitar?...
(T can ask and answer with one students as an example.)
Step 3 Presentation (about 2 minutes)
1. Guessing game: (show a picture) T: What can she/he do? I can only answer your questions Yes or No. Get students to present the sentence Can she/he…?
2. Then teacher can ask and answer with a student as an example:
Can she/he sing? Help students to answer: Yes, she/he can./No, she/he can’t.
3. Practice: Ask and answer with two groups of pictures.
Step 4 Presentation (about 4 minutes)
1. T: I can play basketball, so I want to join the basketball club or the sport club. You can speak English. So what club do you want to join? Students answer the question. Yes, English Club. If you can draw, what club do you want to join?
Ask the whole class to answer together: I want to join…
2. Ask and answer: What club do you want to join?

Students may want to join other clubs like debating club, chess club, cooking club, photo club, stamp club, Japanese club, French club etc.
Step 5 Listening Practice (about 2 minutes)
1. Do 1b: Listen and number the conversations.
2. Do 2a: Listen and circle the clubs you hear.
3. Do 2b: Listen and complete the conversation. And practice it.
Step 6 2d (about 6 minutes)
This is a dialogue. Let students read it first. Then let them read after the teacher. The teacher emphasizes the usages of “want” and “let”. Also, let students pay attention to the phrase “what about…” and make sentences with the important words and phrases. Finally let the students role-play the conversation and make their own conversations
Step 7 Survey (about 4 minutes)
Ask your classmates:
1. What sports can you play? (Can you swim/play chess/play soccer/play basketball/play baseball…?)
2. What instruments can you play? (Can you play the guitar/the piano/the violin/the drum…?)

Step 8 3a (about 4 minutes)
Ask some students to write the sentences on the blackboard and check them.
Step 9 3b (about 6 minutes)
Complete the poster by the students themselves. Then let someone read his answer to the class.
Step 10 3c (about 6 minutes)
1. Divide students into groups to find out what the students can do in their group.
2. After talking about the topic, make a list of their talents. Let students tell what they can do to the others.
Step 11 Summary (about 3 minutes)
1. In this class, we have learnt words: talk, tell, story, write, or, show, kung fu.
2. Introduce Grammar Focus. Explain clearly by giving more examples.

Step 12 Homework (about 2 minutes)
