When Emily handed Ms. Miller her homework, she couldn't imagine how writing a short story would lead to more than a grade.
Emily, who was shy, had few close friends. In her art class, when other students discussed painting skills, she usually kept quiet. No one except Sofia seemed to notice her at all.
Emily wanted to invite Sofia to see the art show at the local museum. Every time she had an opportunity to bring it up, she would start by talking about her own painting. She wasn't sure where else to begin and she never got to the invitation before the bell rang.
When Emily received an A+ on her story, she was excited. She knew that writing was fun and came easily to her, but she didn't realize she was good at it. Ms.Miller's opinion about her story made her think she had a special talent, kind of like Sofia's for painting. Ms.Miller encouraged her to enter an upcoming national writing competition.
At the beginning, Emily didn't want to enter the competition. She was worried about losing her new pride in herself if she didn't win. But Ms. Miller insisted that taking risks was part of knowing who you were and what you could do.

One of the most important life skills is self-discipline(自律), It helps us develop healthy lifestyle habits.
Everyone feels good when they know that they are doing good things, Probably one of the biggest problems with self-discipline is the word "discipline". Discipline really does not have to be painful or difficult. You can start by taking small actions and only one at a time until it becomes something that really makes you feel good when you are doing it. Let us say that you want to lose a little weight or get in better shape. You do not have to sign up at the gym and begin a 5-day a week program. What about walking around your community once a day for a week, and then increasing it to two times a day for two weeks
It really starts with finding your motivation(动力). Why do you want to lose weight or get in shape Is that reason strong enough We need to remember that we have choices and one of them is to say "no" to the things that will take our attention away from completing things to make our life happier and healthier. We have the power to say "yes" to right things, no matter how small, each day, to head us in the direction of our goals.
We all know that when people make a plan with small, simple steps to get to the goals they have, they are more likely to reach them. You need to listen to your heart and know what effort you want to put into it as you move towards living a better life.
You don't need to make this hard. Just do something to head yourself in the right direction today and then do it again tomorrow and every day after that! Remember, a baby step is better than no step at all.

For years, scientists have known how to measure(衡量) the intelligence(智力) of a person. Recently they began to do research into group intelligence. Early research suggests that group intelligence is not the total of the intelligence of the persons in it. So what is the secret of a group's success
Researchers at a research company and a university have both dealt with this question and they believe they finally have a handle on what makes some work teams successful. In the study of the company, researchers collected information and studied it to find patterns(模式). Are members of effective groups friends outside of work Do members with similar personalities work together best They discussed many opinions, but found no patterns to support them. In fact, who was in the team did not make a difference. Instead, the difference between more and less effective teams lay in the interaction(互动) among the members. The university group collected information by using digital badges(数字徽章) that people agreed to wear. These badges provided a wealth of information that included how long people spoke, what kinds of gestures they made, where they were looking during interaction, and their facial expressions. As in the study of the company, the university research group found that the key to an effective team was how members interacted.
Among the findings, the most important is that, in effective teams, members spoke for almost the same amount of time—not at every meeting or interaction, but across the course of a project. The second one was that members showed empathy, an understanding of how it might feel to walk in somebody else's shoes. A high level of these two characteristics makes a member feel comfortable when he voices his opinions and makes suggestions without fear of a negative response from other members. They believe that others will listen to them and value what they say.
One might argue that most of these findings are obvious. However, understanding group intelligence can help people make the basic changes that are necessary to improve group performance.

A.They studied the findings of some earlier researches.
B.They discussed their opinions and found common patterns.
C.They asked people questions and explained the answers.
D.They collected information of people's behaviors.
32.What can we learn about the researchers' findings
A.Group members need to divide the amount of time in an interaction.
B.It is necessary for group members to understand each other's feelings.
C.Negative responses will be more common to see among group members.
D.The interaction patterns should be different among the members of a group.
33.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage

Free-fall If this sleeping position is not familiar to you, you should know that at least 7% of the world's population sleep that way. In this position, you have your hands on or around your pillow, with your head turned to one side. But it may create a twist(扭伤) in the neck. Some studies suggest that generally you're a social person if you like to sleep in this position.

Jeremiah's Mistake
Jeremiah's Mistake Jeremiah hurried into the kitchen and washed his hands. He had exactly one hour until his father got home. He wasn't used to starting dinner this early. On his nights to cook, Jeremiah generally got dinner ready in fifteen minutes. But Dad always praised Jeremiah's meals, no matter how simple they were. "Delicious!" he would say. But Jeremiah knew Dad liked more complicated (复杂的) dishes, because on Dad's nights to cook, he used a ton of ingredients. Dad was a natural cook. Not Jeremiah-at least, not until tonight.
It was Dad's birthday, and for once in his life, Jeremiah was cooking something complicated: spaghetti with homemade sauce(酱). He'd eaten it a million times, so he knew most of the ingredients. "Tomatoes, onions, garlic, beef," he thought, looking through the fridge. They had everything except the beef. No problem - they'd go vegetarian tonight.
Jeremiah cut up the vegetables with Dad's special knife and put them into the pot. Then he turned to Dad's spice(香料) collection. He picked a few familiar ones and put them in. The pleasing smell of fresh tomatoes amazed him. He tasted it just as Dad usually did. It was terrible! Way too spicy. Aha! A lime would cool things down. He added in as much lime juice as he could. One more taste. Ugh. It was awful! Now the sauce was sour and spicy.
He left the kitchen and went into his room. He could at least order pizza, so Dad wouldn't have to stay hungry on his own birthday. As he counted his money, he heard the front door open.
"Hi, Jer!"Dad called.
"Coming."
Jeremiah returned to the kitchen, where he found Dad digging through the food cupboard. "I'm buying pizza," Jeremiah said. "It's not much of a birthday dinner. . . "
Dad turned, holding a bag of chips and a bowl of Jeremiah's spaghetti sauce. "We don't need pizza!" Dad smiled. "This delicious salsa(萨尔萨辣酱)is a meal in itself!"
24. Why did Jeremiah decide to cook something complicated?
A. Because it was his dad's birthday.
B. Because his dad told him to do so.
C. Because he arrived home early.
D. Because he was a natural cook.
25. Jeremiah thought the sauce he made was .
A. neither sour nor spicy enough B. different from what he had expected
C. simple but healthy D. as delicious as he had imagined

Why Do Top Athletes Choke Under Pressure?
According to classic economic theory, the higher the reward, the better the expected performance. As a result, we could expect the best performance at the most important moments. But why do we so often see the most talented and experienced athletes perform much worse than expected in important competitions like the Olympics?
Why the Drop in Performance?
It is not necessarily true that there's a direct relationship between incentives(激励) and achievement. Research has shown that increased motivation(动机) beyond a certain level harms an athlete's performance. We call this phenomenon "choking under pressure". Greater incentives may lead to higher levels of arousal(兴奋). The relationship between performance and arousal looks like an inverted U shape (倒U形), meaning that performance is the best at certain levels of arousal and drops with over-arousal.
The desire to perform as well as possible is thought to create performance pressure. Many studies have shown increased pressure has a bad effect on athletes' performance in skill-based games. When people overthink or consciously monitor each step, the drop in performance happens.
28
Beyond the pressure coming from the important competitions, another thing that may add pressure is the level of expectations. An experiment suggested high audience expectations harm performance in a skill-based task. For example, one of the most famous biathletes in history, Martin Fourcade, said it was very emotional for him to compete in his home country and also much harder than competing abroad because of greater expectations.
We tested this home disadvantage by using data from biathlon(冬季两项) competitions over 17 years. We have found the most titled athletes miss a lot more shots when competing in their home country compared to when they compete abroad. The most reasonable explanation likely relates to the level of expectations from the homeland.
How to Deal with It?
There are several ways to reduce stress, such as a countdown or taking a deep breath before the task. But the base for any solution is to realize that stress affects performance. Choking under pressure can happen to the best athletes and it's not a shame to admit it. The more athletes know about the effect pressure can have on them, the more likely they are to succeed at the highest level.
27. What can we learn from "choking under pressure"?
A. The higher the reward, the better the expected performance.
B. Better achievement in games results from a drop in pressure.
C. Arousal beyond a certain level harms an athlete's performance.
D. Athletes' performance in games has something to do with their training.
28. Which of the following would be the best heading for Paragraph 4 and 5?
A. Pressure as a Key to Improving Performance.
B. Pressure as a Push for Becoming Top-level Athletes.
C. High Expectations as a Cause of Choking Under Pressure.
D. High Expectations as an Incentive to Compete in the Home Country.
29. To deal with pressure, the athletes should first .
A. avoid the possible feelings of pressure
B. share their worries with friends and coaches
C. try their best to succeed at the highest level
D. recognize the effect of stress on performance

Nowadays, the online world is nearly as important as the real one. It is not uncommon to see the whole Internet bands together to "cancel" someone after they make a mistake, which is called Cancel Culture. It can result in a person, if famous, losing fans and having to face attacks online. Even a normal person faces risks of losing their jobs or personal relationships. While stepping foot on any social media platform, everyone including young children can fall victim to it.
Cancel Culture is a lose-lose situation. The person being canceled has to stand the negative effects of the Internet, and the people doing the canceling are contributing to(促成) the mindset that it's okay to do this to people they don't know. Young kids may not understand or contribute completely to Cancel Culture, but by simply being on the Internet, they can see it firsthand, affecting their real lives. A New York Metro Parents article describes one girl who was canceled in school the same way people are canceled on the Internet, and her friends wouldn't even talk to or look at her.
Dr. Pam Rultledge, a media psychologist, explains in her blog post that Cancel Culture discourages kids from expressing their opinions and standing up for others. It's always an "us" against them mindset; anyone agreeing with the person being canceled is at risk of being left out online too.
So again I ask, what is this teaching our kids That they aren't allowed to make mistakes That they have to be perfect This may be the current narrative, but it shouldn't be. Everyone messes up at some point, especially young children. They shouldn't be publicly punished for it and not given the chance to change people's minds. Forgiveness is an important skill kids need to learn, and Cancel Culture is encouraging the opposite.
One small mistake doesn't make someone a bad person, but Cancel Culture makes them feel as if they are. Cancel Culture doesn't have to exist. We make it exist. And just as easily, we can make it disappear by contributing to an online world full of praise and love.

D. To suggest possible ways of changing the habit of overusing the Internet.
32 In Cancel Culture, a person who makes mistakes will be .
A. comforted with great patience
B. left out and publicly punished
C. taught how to correct the mistakes
D. blocked from using the Internet again
33. By saying "This may be the current narrative, but it shouldn't be" in Paragraph 4, the writer wants to express that Cancel Culture .
A. is easy to change B. has a two-sided nature
C. is supposed to be canceled D. stops mistakes from being repeated

It was Saturday and Juan was going to his friend's house for the day. He was so excited. He thought it would be fun to bring some video games to play with his friend, Tom.
Tom lived on the other side of the town and did not own any video games. He didn't really ever play them, but he didn't want to tell Juan. He was afraid Juan would tell the other kids at school. When Juan arrived and suggested playing video games. Tom looked a bit uncomfortable.
"I thought we could go outside and play tag or hide-and-seek," said Tom.
"I don't usually play such kind of games,"said Juan.
"Well, we don't have a television or a computer because my parents don't have much money, and we can't afford those extra things, so I usually play old-fashioned games, like tag or hide-and-seek, or dodgeball. Would you please not tell anyone at school that we are poor " asked Tom.
"You shouldn't worry about what other people think," Juan told Tom. "I'm sure the games you play are just as fun as video games."
The two boys went outside and began playing hide-and-seek. Tom's parents had a big backyard with many cool places to hide. Juan and Tom played for over an hour! After lunch, they played tag. Juan had so much fun. "I should play these games more often," he said to Tom.

"Sweetie, there are plenty of ways to have fun without video games. When I was growing up, we played hopscotch," Juan's mom said.
“What's hopscotch ” asked Juan.

Some people are worried that wearing masks will have a bad effect on children's ability to learn language and socialize. Even parents often worry about how a school year without smiles might negatively(消极地) influence their children.
These worries are understandable, but according to Dr.Danovitch, a research psychologist, who studies the cognitive(认知的) and social development of children, wearing a mask at school could improve certain social and cognitive skills, helping to strengthen abilities like self-control and attention. Take language learning as an example. It's true that masks cover our mouths and that seeing mouth shape and movement helps babies learn language. But learning how to communicate involves a lot more than mouths. Looking at eyes is at least as important as looking at mouths to understand the people you are looking at and what they are trying to express. Children also make use of other signs to figure out what new words mean and what other people are thinking. A classroom full of people wearing masks is a great chance for children to practice paying attention to those signs, such as a classmate's tone of voice or a teacher's body language.
Wearing a mask can also help teach children to pay more attention to their own bodies and physical behaviors. Keeping a mask on over the course of a school day involves the kind of self-control that many children find challenging. Needless to say, children will not always be perfect at keeping their masks on, but they have to be mindful of when their masks are slipping down or when it is OK to take them off. The research on self-control suggests that children who master the skills needed to keep their masks on will grow up to be better at achieving their long-term goals.
Perhaps most importantly, wearing masks during a pandemic(流行病) is a chance for children to practice caring for their community. A recent study shows that children understand the spread of illness better than ever. Wearing a mask gives young children the ability to do something to help protect other people. For older children, mask-wearing is a way to teach them about duty and sacrifice(牺牲). They believe that it feels good to make sacrifices for people in need. Stressing that the discomfort and inconvenience of mask-wearing are forms of caring and public service might encourage children to address other social problems in their lives.
In fact, how children feel about wearing masks at school, and how much they benefit from wearing them, are going to depend on how the parents, teachers and caregivers around them present the topic. Masks are hopefully not here to stay, but while they are still necessary, we should make the most of them.
27.What does the writer tell us in Paragraph 2
A.A teacher uses body language to teach what new words mean.
B.Wearing masks gives children a chance to practice paying attention.
C.Dr.Danovitch helps children with their cognitive and social development.
D.Looking at the mouth matters more than looking at the eyes when people talk.
28.What can we learn from the passage
A.It is unknown if mask-wearing helps children improve social skills.
B.Children believe that the discomfort of mask-wearing is acceptable.
C.People's thoughts and emotions are hidden when they are wearing masks.
D.Children who know when to keep their masks on will probably be successful.

A.How to Help Children Develop Skills
B.How to Be Perfect at Keeping Masks On

D.Wearing Masks Can Solve Social Problems

This high school term was supposed to be easier. That is the thought in my mind — after all, this is the first term that I'm taking less than20 credits(学分), and I'm enjoying all of my classes. However, this term has felt the most difficult and my grades are much worse than they were when I was taking two more classes.
I could blame (怪罪) it on the fact that I've been busy working in several school clubs and practicing for a school musical several times a week. Actually, it is important that I don't overlook(忽视) that because it wouldn't be fair to myself to say it doesn't play a part in my low grades. However, it's clearly not the only reason. In fact, study has never been easy for me.
I thought that putting in more effort would change things, but it hasn't. The exam I studied for hours on comes back a failure. I fall asleep while working on homework and forget to hand it in. I sit in class taking lots of notes, and when I look back at them to do my homework, it all reads as gibberish. I start to realize that maybe some of the work I do is just hard.
I'm learning that it's okay not to be the best at the work that you do. When you're used to being naturally good, it's hard to realize that throwing the same amount(数量) of effort at something that is more difficult won't just automatically(自动地) work. However, we shouldn't feel bad about that. Even though we're here for learning, there are so many things to spend our time on. I think of the things I want as all having a price, and the amount that I would like to pay at any given time changes, as does the price. It's not to say that you should stop working hard, but it's good to keep in mind that sometimes the price just might be too high for you at a given time.
You don't have to do everything perfectly, even if it looks easy, and you're allowed to deal with knowledge that just doesn't make sense to you. This is the time to learn how to keep on keeping on. We will be the best of ourselves once we learn that being our best isn't a precondition to learning.
30.What was probably the writer's expectation for her term
A.To take more classes and be able to enjoy them.
B.To live an easy school life and get good grades.
C.To give up some clubs to have more time to study.
D.To experience a challenging term and get perfect marks
31.What does the underlined word"gibberish"in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Something difficult to remember B.Something funny.
C.Something impossible to understand D.Something boring.
32.What can we learn from Paragraph 4
A.People will pay a higher price if they stop working
B.People have to ask for help if they want to learn well
C.People shouldn't give up their goals even though they feel bad.
D.People can't always make something possible by working hard.
33.The writer would probably agree .
A.we should know how to keep going in the face of challenges
B.we shouldn't study things that don't make sense to us
C.we should perform perfectly when our work is easy
D.we shouldn't take part in school activities

My First Marathon(马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train.Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my seventh year in school. In my first PE class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn't do either well. He later told me that I was "not athletic".
The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running at the age of 18, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills(意志力)!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line.
I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself. Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign:"GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my parents waving a sign. They are my biggest fans. They never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my costs on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.

We've known that sitting for long periods of time every day has countless health consequences (后果) like a higher risk of heart disease. But now a new study has found that sitting is also bad for your brain
A study published last week, conducted by Dr.Prabha Siddarth at the University of California, showed that sedentary(久坐不动的) behavior is related to reduced thickness of the medial temporal lobe(中颞叶),a brain area that is critical to learning and memory.
The researchers asked a group of 35 healthy people, aged 45 to 70, about their activity levels and the average number of hours each day spent sitting and then scanned their brains. They found that the subjects who reported sitting for longer periods had the thinnest medial temporal lobes. It means that the more time you spend in a chair, the worse it is for your brain health, resulting in possible damage to learning and memory.
What is also interesting is that this study did not find a significant relation between the level of physical activity and thickness of this brain area, suggesting that exercise, even severe exercise, may not be enough to protect you from the harmful effects of sitting.
It then surprisingly turned out that you don't even have to move much to improve cognition(认知): just standing will do the trick(获得成功). For example, two groups of subjects were asked to complete a test while either sitting or standing. Participants were asked to name the color, like the word "green" in blue ink. Subjects thinking on their feet beat those who sat by 3 milliseconds.
The cognitive effects of severe physical exercise are well known. But the possibility that standing more and sitting less improves brain health could lower the standard for everyone.
I know, this all runs counter to(与.背道而驰) received ideas about deep thought, from our grade school teachers, who told us to sit down and focus, to Rodin's famous "The Thinker", seated with chin on his hand.
They were wrong. You can now all stand up.

Handwriting is gradually becoming a dying art. Most college students type nearly everything. Elementary and high schools across the country now view typing courses as the main choice. But what are we losing as handwriting loses its significance(重要性) in society It's brain power, according to some studies.
Researchers from Princeton University and the University of California conducted a series of studies to prove the differences between students who wrote out their notes and those who typed notes. Participants(参与者) took notes on a lecture using one of the two methods and were tested on the material 30 minutes after the lecture and again a week later. The results of the research appeared in Psychological Science. The authors of the study noted that, while past studies on this topic tended to focus on the distractions(干扰) that resulted from using a computer, in this study, participants were using the laptops only to take notes. And handwriting still emerged as(成为) the champion.
That's not to say that typing doesn't have its benefits. Clearvue Health recently took a deep dive into the findings of a study to assess pros and cons(评估利弊)of writing and typing. The typists could copy down significantly more words than the writers. But while more of the lecture's content was retained in the computer when typing. The tests that the participants took proved this. On the test 30 minutes after the lecture, typists and writers did more or less equally well on questions about the basic facts of the lecture,- but typists faltered(结巴) when it came to more conceptual questions. Students who take handwritten notes need to quickly process the lesson and rewrite it in a way they can understand, giving them an advantage in remembering new concepts(概念)in the long term.
As for the later quiz, well, the results were similar. Students with handwritten notes were able to remember and still understand the concepts of the lecture after a week had passed. These participants were also more open to understanding new ideas. Clearly, writing by hand can make you smarter.
Computers aren't going away anytime soon, but that doesn't mean paper notebooks need to become obsolete. If your goal is to be able to set down facts, the efficiency of typing might best benefit you. But when it comes to truly dissecting(分析) information, truly learning from it in the sense of making connections between analyzing the material, and retaining it in the long run, writing by hand is a better choice.
30.What can we know about the studies in Paragraph 2
A.The studies were about the advantages of taking notes.
B.Participants used two methods to take notes at the same time.
C.The results of the studies were published in Psychological Science.
D.The studies were only conducted by researchers from Princeton University.

A.They kept more contents of a lecture in their mind when typing.
B.They could copy down more contents of a lecture than writers.
C.They could remember new concepts for a long time by typing.
D.They did better on questions about the facts of the lecture than writers.

Shake off the Shyness
Shyness once took over my life. When I was 13, in my French lesson, my teacher told us to record ourselves speaking about our families. I recorded myself with confidence. When I pressed "play" to listen back, I heard my strange voice — just like a little kid. That made me very shy and I avoided attending events from then on.
Years after that, I became a teacher in a primary school. On the first day, my hands could not help but sweat(出汗)The weight of my arms was trying to prevent me from opening the door. Though a little nervous, I opened the door slowly. Suddenly, a wave of laughter flew through the air. Then I walked in, and felt it was a bad choice to be a teacher. They did not seem to mind me at all. After class, a little girl walked up to me and asked, "Could you help me to read the passage " with the most excited face I have ever seen as if she had just gotten a cookie. "I like your voice." she said. I shook my shyness off and my body felt as light as a feather(羽毛).Perhaps to be a teacher was not such a bad idea after all. I read the passage for her and told some interesting stories with all the kids. All of them listened to me carefully, and we had a wonderful story time.
Besides, there was one simple thing that surprised me most. Every day when the students left, they would clean after themselves and leave their areas tidy without ever being told to do so. Actually they behaved very well. I would have to say these students gave me one of the greatest experiences of my life. These helped me shook off my shyness. From then on, I tried to be a good teacher.
In the future, I want to create a space for shy people like me to shine.

The Sleepover Program
Sending stuffed animals for a sleepover at the library encourages children to read with them, say researchers in a new study in Heliyon. For the first time, the study proves stuffed animal sleepovers are an effective way to get children to read.Stuffed animal sleepover programs are designed to get children interested in picture books. Children take their toys to a library for the night, where the animals search for books they want to read. At this point, workers and volunteers take photos of the animals traveling around the library to learn about it and reading together. The next day, the children collect their stuffed animals and the photos of what they did during the night. They're also given the books their animals chose to read.
The team organized a stuffed animal sleepover program for 42 preschool children. "We wanted to know if there really was an effect, and if so, how long it lasts," said lead author Dr. Yoshihiro Okazaki of Okayama University. They found before the sleepover, the children did not spend time looking at the books in their play area at preschool. Immediately after the sleepover, the number of children who read to the stuffed animals was significantly(明显地) higher than the number who did not.
"Surprisingly, not only did the children show interest in the picture books, but they also began to read to their stuffed animals. This means that a new behavior appeared that the children had not shown before; we did not expect anything like this." When parents read to their children, it isn't an active form of reading for the child. But when children read to their stuffed animals, it is a more spontaneous(自发的), self-directed form of reading, helping them develop into more active readers.
However, the effect had worn off after three days. The researchers also tested a method for continuing the effect: they reminded the children of the sleepover a month later, by hiding the stuffed animals and showing them the photos again the next day. This simple method led to a significant increase in the number of children reading to their stuffed animals.

If we compare active listening with passive listening, is one better than the other As we will find one is better than the other for many situations but not necessarily all. Many people think that listening is a passive business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.
Listening well also requires people pay all their attention to someone else. A necessary part of listening well is the rule known as 'bracketing'. Bracketing includes the giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices(偏见) and strong wishes, to experience as far as possible someone else's world from the inside, stepping into his or her shoes. That means if you want to listen well you should have a short acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way and the energy required for listening well is so great that it can be completed only by the will to improve oneself for the growth of each other.
Most of the time, we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain expected results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don't want to hear.
It wasn't until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is always therapeutic(有疗效的). In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of psychotherapy(心理疗法), before any of the causes of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this experience, but the most important among them, I believe, was the patient's sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.
30.Why do many people listen passively
A.Because listening passively is better than listening actively.
B.Because they like to pay attention to what they are talking.
C.Because they are not willing to speak to others patiently.
D.Because they don't want to care what they are listening.
31.The word "temporary" in Paragraph 2 probably means " ".

A.people always listened actively to make work easily
B.people often listen purposefully in communication

A.The doctor realized that patients needed to be truly listened.
B.The patients could be better soon if they were taken good care of.
C.True communication needs speakers to accept other person's ideas.
D.Most people do not listen well because listening is a passive process.

Negative self-talk is that little voice in your head that judges you.It says you are not good enough. It reminds you of all your faults(过错) and mistakes.
Dr.Hughes,an educator and a researcher on how the mind controls behavior, noticed that there are some students who are doing all the right things. They are good students. They show up for class. They do their homework. They study hard. But when it comes to taking a test, they do not do well. They may suffer(遭受) from something commonly called “test anxiety(焦虑)".
Lindsay was one of Hughes' best students at a community college. She came to class early, took part in discussions and did all of her homework. However, she did poorly in exams. When Hughes asked her how she felt before a test, she told him she was very nervous. She wondered why she had trouble remembering what she had studied. She said she did not trust that she knew the right answers. This is an example of negative self-talk, which can influence a student's grades.
Dr.Hughes took Lindsay's negative self-talks and turned them into positive(积极的) questions. Before a test,he told Lindsay to say to herself:Why am I so relaxed when I take an exam Why am I so focused during my exam Why do I remember everything I study for an exam? Why do I trust my answers?
Lindsay took his advice. Two weeks later, she took an exam in another class and scored 15 points higher than she had on an earlier exam.Four weeks later, she earned an "A" on the final exam in Hughes' class.Lindsay left community college and went to a four-year university. She continued to use the method of positive self-talk.When Dr.Hughes checked up on her a year later, she had good news to share:she had got straight As on all of her exams.
Dr.Hughes saw student after student succeed with his method.More importantly, they got their self-confidence back. And he does not just help his students. He also encourages his friends and neighbors to get rid of (negative self-talk gradually in their life.In a television interview,he said."We can program ourselves for success in class or in life,or we can program ourselves for failure.

Today, the world is highly competitive.Governments, companies and individuals (个人) are all competing to be the best in the society. It is true that competition leads to better products and services;many people, especially parents, believe that being competitive is helpful for children because it prepares them for the modem world. However,is competition the first thing that our society needs
Schools teach students to compete for better grades, while in businesses, people are better paid for their competitive performances. However, none of them realizes the adverse effects competition has on the society. For two companies in a competition, one will surely lose then disappear, while the other remains stronger in the market. If this is popular in a country, the number of companies may drop, and then the economy(经济) gets worse.Besides, competition may result in distrust in society.
Cooperation (presents a different petition breaks relationships, while cooperation strengthens relationships. When we cooperate with others,we meet new people,we get to know new things,we share thoughts,we help each other and we succeed together.Cooperation focuses on the growth and development of everyone,as many people work together toward a common goal. This way.everyone is equally(相同地) developed.
The processes of cooperation have played an important role in shaping the history. Let's discuss the example of UN United Nations). The UN's calling is to keep world peace and create harmony (和谐) All nations have cooperated and will keep cooperating with one another to fight for a better future for the whole world.
Sports also provide us with a best example of cooperation.Think about how all members of the team forget who they themselves are and work only for the benefit of the team.Although sports are competitive by nature, when there is cooperation between the members, they encourage and support each other, and they get a greater chance of winning.
The development of both society and individual today depends on not just healthy competition but cooperation.Unfortunately, people are not taught cooperative skills at an early age,and this has encouraged a culture of competition in today's society. The skills of cooperation should be included in the educational system for children in their early ages. This way.children grow up into adults who value and welcome cooperation, which brings out the best in us.

Lee ran home almost all the way from the bus stop. His brother Jason had promised to take him to the new skate park today.
As soon as he rushed inside the house, he picked up his skate equipment quickly. He was so excited he put his elbow pads and knee guards on even though Jason wasn't home yet.
"Hey, Lee," Jason said, walking through the door. "Are you ready to go "
Lee held his arms out. "Ready!"
"Who's that " Jason asked, pointing out of the window.
Lee saw Alice standing by the mailbox. "Oh! What's she doing here I told her I'd work on the science project with her tomorrow."

C. Lunch or Junk
It's lunchtime at Hall Memorial School in Connecticut, and 10-year-old Haley is making her way through the food line. Many of her friends are pleased with the day's lunch selections: pizza and French fries and hot dogs. But Haley feels discouraged. "I use four or five napkins just trying to get the grease off the pizza," she says. "Where are the healthy choices "
Health experts are asking the same question. They say foods high in fat, salt, and sugar should be banned from school lunch programs. This includes some items you might not suspect(怀疑), like fruit punch, which is loaded with sugar, and macaroni and cheese, which is sky-high in fat and salt. "Children are already having too much junk food," says Jen Keller, a dietitian at the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine. "It's important to offer them only healthy items in school."
It's not that health experts want to take foods kids like best from them. They just want to help kids avoid many of the health problems that come with eating large quantities of unhealthy food. Today, 15 percent of children ages 6 to 11 are obese, or seriously overweight. That's up from just 6. 5 percent in the late 1970s. Poor diet and obesity can cause diseases like lype-2 diabetes(糖尿病), which can lead to blindness and kidney problems. As of a few years ago, this disease didn't happen so often to children that it was called "adult onset diabetes." "Many foods that are offered in cafeterias(自助食堂) are linked to these problems," Keller says.
Most school do offer some healthful foods, but experts say that doesn't solve the problem, "Given a choice, most kids are going to choose junk over something healthy," says Pat Thorton, a psychologist who studies obesity in children.
Thorton and other experts agree that schools and parents need to educate kids about making good food choices, both in and out of school. For example, few kids understand that many popul
