Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote a total of eight books in the “Little House” series. The books have sold over sixty million copies worldwide, in more than forty languages.
Wilder's books tell about people and events that are partly based on her memories of growing up in Kansas and South Dakota in the middle of the eighteen hundreds. Pioneer(拓荒者) life has long since disappeared in those areas. Yet the music she grew up with is alive and well.
The “Little House on the Prairie” television series is perhaps the best known version of the Laura Ingalls Wilder stories. It was broadcast for eight seasons, beginning in nineteen seventy four. The shows have since been translated into eighteen languages.　
“Her work, her books, her stories are typically American. They're about discoveries and struggles and getting over difficulties. They're about family and about making your way in the world，” says Dean Butler, who played Laura Ingalls' husband Almonzo Wilder in the TV series.
Dale Cockrell, a professor at Vanderbilt University，had already published a book on the “Little House”songs, seven sheet music(活页乐谱) books and nearly fifty musical recordings. He learned about the songs when he began reading the “Little House” books to his eight year old son. He realised that nowhere had he seen a fuller collection of popular music from the nineteenth century.
“Just about any form of popular music that would have been heard and enjoyed by audiences from the eighteen sixties to the eighteen eighties is included in the books，” says Dale Cockrell.

Children all around the world are familiar(熟悉的) with fairy tales, such as The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea and The Emperor's New Clothes. The stories are the creation of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. The year 2005 marked his 200th birthday. To celebrate this, the China Puppet Theatre in Beijing held a series of shows based on his classic fairy tales.
Andersen was born in the slum(贫民窟) of Odense, Denmark, on April 2, 1805. His early life was not easy. He received little early education. In 1816, his father died and Andersen was forced to go out to work. At the age of 14, Andersen moved to Copenhagen to start a career as a singer and actor. He struggled for three years until he had to leave the theatre when his voice broke in 1822.
Andersen went to a grammar school after he left the theatre. He was admitted(接收) to Copenhagen University in 1828 because of his hard work. He began to publish his fairy tales in 1835.
Andersen died on August 4, 1875. His home in Odense is now a museum and thousands of people visit it every year.
