Being able to speak a foreign language is one of the most useful skills I have ever learned.
It has allowed me to travel, meet new people and learn so much more about different cultures and traditions. In this way, it has helped me to open my eyes and my mind to everything that is going on in the world, rather than just in the UK.
I started learning French at the age of 11 and German at the age of 13. I still study German now, and over this summer I hope to pick up my French again, as I will be teaching both next year. I can't wait to pass on my knowledge of languages to other people. To this day I am still happy with my decision and hope that in the future more students will make the same choices as I did.
I have recently realised just how much you can do with a language, especially in the world of work. If you speak another language and ask someone to name the jobs you can do, what they always say are: teacher, translator or interpreter(翻译员). However, now knowing another language is an advantage in about any job you can think of. Most businesses will have offices abroad or will want to do business with other countries, and for that reason they need people who know other languages.
So it is clear that speaking languages is very useful, and although it might be difficult to learn a foreign language well at first, it is always worth it in the end.
( )24.How old was the writer when he started to learn French
A.6. B.11. C.13. D.21.

( )26.In the writer's school, ________ study German.
A.all of the students
B.none of the students
C.some of the students
D.only some teachers

Did you know that about 55% of communication is unspoken, so in fact, our bodies are actually saying more than our words. I find that the key to a successful conversation in any language is to speak to people not only in their spoken language but also with the body language they know best.
Britain, along with much of Northern Europe, has a non touch culture, so“personal space” is very important. In a formal(正式的) situation, we would usually greet each other with a handshake. Informally, but not so often, my British friends and I would greet with a hug. Hardly ever would we greet with a kiss on the cheek, let alone a hug and two kisses on the cheeks! Here in the south of Italy, and in many different parts of the world, both men and women greet with two kisses on the cheeks, use a lot of hand signs and often touch each other. In other words, little personal space is left between people when communicating.
At university, I have learnt to successfully communicate in spoken Italian. And since I moved to live with the local people, I have also started to pick up their body language. Sometimes, I find myself not knowing what hand signs to use when expressing myself. However, what I know for sure is that I would miss the opportunity to fully put myself in the Italian culture if I keep my personal space unbroken.
Here are 5 body language tips in Italy:
※Use different signs: head, arms and hands.
※Use facial expressions. Always smile at people! It is said that smiling is the most powerful unspoken way to communicate friendliness.
※Use eye contact(交流), because “the eyes are the window to the soul”.
※Don't worry about personal space. Italians are a people who like to use the sense of touch, so moving away or keeping your distance may be considered as being unfriendly.
※Touch. When meeting and leaving, always shake hands.
( )27.In Britain, people usually greet each other with________.
A.a warm hug
B.a handshake
C.a kiss on the cheek
D.two kisses on the cheeks
( )28.The writer uses Britain and Italy as examples to show ________.
A.men and women greet in the same way
B.Italians are more friendly than the British people
C.keeping personal space is very important in any country
D.people in different countries use different body language
( )29.From Paragraph 3, we can learn that the writer ________.
A.likes to keep his personal space
B.tries to learn Italian body language
C.knows much about Italian hand signs
D.keeps using British body language in Italy
D 2019·顺义期末
Questions You Should Not Ask a Foreigner
After speaking to a number of foreigners, you might be forgiven for thinking that no question could be ruder than “How old are you?”
Yes, asking a person's age will likely get you into trouble, especially if you ask a woman. However, money is just as difficult to ask about as age.
In western countries, a person's salary(薪水) is as private as his or her age. US manners expert Thomas P. Farley explained why it was a taboo(禁忌). “So much of who we are is based on what we do professionally(专业地), and by extension(引申开来), what we earn,” he told Forbes magazine.“In American society, much of the respect we get from others is tied to what we earn. So the subject can be touchy.”
But maybe you are feeling brave and still want to try to find out how much your foreign friend earns. How can you ask the question tactfully
Do not ask, “How much money do you make?” The most likely reply will be, “That's none of your business.” You may then feel bad. Without knowing, you will have made a big cultural mistake. Get over it and try again another time.
Ask the person, “What do you do for a living?” or “What's your job title?” Most people will be happy to give you an answer. After they tell you their job titles, you can make a rough(粗略的) guess at their salary based on the average salary for someone.
Once you learn their job titles, you could say, “That's interesting. I'm thinking about a career in that line of work. Can you give me a rough idea of what the pay is like?” You have a better chance of getting information with a question like this than with a direct question.
Of course, there are people who choose to avoid answering the question and reply by saying, “Oh, I get by.” Some might jokingly reply, “Not nearly enough.” At this point, it's best to change the subject. After all, money isn't everything.
( )30.What does the article mainly talk about
A.How to deal with sensitive(敏感的) questions.
B.How to ask foreigners about their salary.
C.The skills of asking some unpleasant questions.
D.Private questions that foreigners don't like to discuss.
( )31.By using Thomas P. Farley's words, the writer means to show that________.
A.in the US, salary is linked to ability
B.money plays an important role in social status(地位)
C.how much you earn often shows what kind of life you live
D.a person's profession often affects opinions about his/her salary
( )32.The underlined word “tactfully” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to________.
A.directly B.honestly
C.skillfully D.clearly
( )33.We can learn from the last paragraph that________.
A.some people are glad to be asked about their earnings
B.you might not get a specific answer even with a tactful question
C.you should avoid asking about a person's salary in the first place
D.the writer suggests replying to a sensitive question in a humorous way

A History of English in Five Words
In 1582, Richard Mulcaster, headmaster of a British school, wrote that the English would not go beyond their island. However, it didn't stay that way. Today, English is spoken all over the world.
English is a colourful and diverse(多样的) language that long has picked up words from many other languages. Here are five words that show the English language's interesting history.
English English began in the language spoken by the early Germanic people in the fifth century AD.It is from them that the word “English” comes. First it is the Latin word “Angli” which means the people of Angul, where the Germanic people were from.
Beef Although roast beef is seen as a traditional English dish, the word “beef” was introduced from the French boeuf during the Middle Ages. It was one of a group of words, including pork and mutton, that were taken from the speech of the French who moved in Britain following the Norman Conquest(诺曼底登陆) of 1066. However, the farmers who kept these living things continued to call them by their old English names: cow, pig and sheep. This difference passes on till today.
Dictionary Dictionary is a borrowing word from Latin dictornarius liber, “book of words”. It first appeared in English in the 6th century, along with a huge number of other words from Latin and Greek. The first English dictionary was written by Robert Cawdrey in 1604. Cawdrey focused only on the difficult words whose meanings would have caused problems for those not educated in Latin and Greek.
Tea Tea was brought into Britain early in the 17 century, becoming very popular by the 1650s. By the 18th century it had become a symbol of fashionable society and a best selling of the coffee house culture.
The word “tea” rises from the Chinese word cha. A love of tea is so ingrained(根深蒂固的) in British life that the expression “cup of tea” has come to stand for anything viewed positively. The saying “It's not my cup of tea.” means “I don't like it.”
Emoji Emoji began developing in Japan in the 1990s for use by teenagers. The word “emoji” comes from the Japanese e“picture”+moji“letter”. Its successful acceptance in English has been helped by its similarity to words with the e prefix(前缀) like email. The Unicode Consortium's(统一码联盟的) official lists emojis and their meanings, but users keep finding creative new ways to employ them. Emojis are just another example of the development and diversity of English.

Ⅴ.题目①
One possible version:
Dear Wei Ping,
I'm glad to hear from you. I think English is one of the most important subjects in middle school.
As we know, in our life, English is getting more and more important. It is widely spoken in the world. But many of us don't know how to learn it well. I can share some learning tips with you.
I think the best way is to use English all the time. At school, we should learn to listen, speak, read and write carefully. We can speak English with our teachers, our classmates and even with foreigners in order to improve our spoken English. Don't be afraid of making mistakes.
After school, we can listen to English songs to improve our listening skills. A saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.” So we should also spend enough time in practising reading and writing English. If we keep on working hard at English, we will be good at it one day.
Yours,
Li Hua
题目②
One possible version:
It's well known that there's no shortcut to success but hard work. One of my experiences helps me realise the truth again.
As I entered Grade 9, I found I had difficulty in speaking English freely. Therefore, I decided to improve my oral English by taking the following measures.First, I kept on listening to tapes and reading aloud to improve my pronunciation.Second, I tried to read English books which I could learn many native expressions from.
Although it was quite challenging, I managed to develop it into a habit. Thanks to my great effort,I am comfortable speaking English now.
I have learned the great value of hard work through this process. I not only feel a sense of achievement but also find the pleasure in hard work as it helps me discover my potential. I believe the more hard working I am, the much happier I will be.
